Routes are for a school certificate after 11 years of school (Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Belarus and others). With 12 years of school, Italy’s 12-year rule is met, while the UK and Germany still assess the certificate itself, so check the university’s country page. Foundation, Studienkolleg or a first year at home: which to choose
All three take about a year and lead to the first year of a bachelor’s abroad. They differ in language, cost and how freely you can choose your subject.
Foundation
A preparatory year at a university or its partner college: subjects for your future degree plus academic English. In the Netherlands, for example, Twente Pathway College costs ≈ $21,200 (€19,000) on its engineering track for September 2026.
Pay only for a programme whose result your target university accepts. Foundation guide →
Studienkolleg
A year taught in German that ends with the Feststellungsprüfung exam. State Studienkollegs charge no tuition, but you need German at B1–B2 and living money: €11,904 for the year (≈ $13,300) for the visa.
A first year at home
A year at a recognised university in the same or a related subject. In Germany it opens direct entry to a related programme; in Italy it meets the 12-year rule. Italy will not credit that year, so you still start in the first year.
What to do and when, starting the year before your final year
Deadlines differ by country, so plan backwards from the earliest deadline on your list.
- Penultimate school year, autumn–winter
Countries and route
Choose two or three countries and a field. Use the table above to see whether your certificate is accepted or you need an extra year: that decides the budget and timing.
- Penultimate school year, spring–summer
Language and tests
Prepare for IELTS or TOEFL and, if needed, the SAT or ACT. Many universities accept language results up to two years old, so taking the test in the summer before your final year is not too early.
- Final school year, September–December
Main applications
UCAS on 15 October and 13 January, the USA on 1 November and in early January, France (DAP) by 15 December, KAIST’s early round by 22 October. Draft your personal statement and line up references early.
- Final school year, January–May
Second wave and offers
Canada by 15 January, the Netherlands by 1 May, Spain’s PCE exams in May–June, Italy’s university applications and Universitaly pre-enrolment. Offers arrive: compare them, pay the deposit, sort out housing.
- Summer after school
Documents and visa
Your certificate with translation and apostille, visa funds, insurance, tickets. For Germany, the Studienkolleg entrance exam; for the UK and Italy, the start of a foundation year.
Six mistakes that cost a year or money
Paying for a foundation year “just in case”
A foundation year only helps if your target university accepts its result. Shortlist first, foundation second.
Leaving the language test too late
You need the certificate by the application deadline, not by graduation. If the score falls short, there is no time left to resit.
Treating the visa minimum as a budget
The visa amount is a floor set by the government. The UK counts it for nine months at most, but you live there all year. Full budget
Choosing by university ranking
A ranking says little about a specific programme. Compare the curriculum, language, placements and entry requirements.
Taking a first year at home in any subject
For Germany and the Netherlands the year only counts in the same or a related subject; TU Delft, for example, asks for the same or a related field.
Applying to one country only
Keep a back-up in another country or with other deadlines, so one rejection does not cost you the year.
A route built around your certificate, with someone who has done it
In every country we work with, StudyU has a student consultant who applied there or studies there now and can tell you how things really work. We are international students first and consultants second, so we help the way we wish someone had helped us. Our large student network keeps us up to date on how admissions work now, not a few years ago.
Free first consultationfrom $700 shortlist in one countryfrom $1,000 admission support
- We check your certificate: where you can go straight in, where you need a year, and which preparatory route your chosen university accepts.
- We build a calendar of tests, applications, scholarships and the visa for your graduation year.
- We shortlist programmes in one country, with requirements, fees and deadlines for each.
- We support your applications: personal statement, documents, submissions and comparing offers.
The university makes the admission decision and the consulate issues the visa; nobody can guarantee either. We answer for what depends on us: a realistic shortlist, checked documents and deadlines met. Paid work runs under a contract with StudyU.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start a bachelor’s abroad straight after 11 years of school?
Yes, in six of the ten countries in our table: the USA, Canada, Spain, France, Turkey and South Korea, given the right grades and language level. An extra year is usually needed for the UK (a foundation year, A-levels or one or two years of university at home), Germany (a Studienkolleg or a first year in a related subject), Italy (the 12-year rule: a year of university at home or a foundation year) and Dutch research universities.
Do foreign universities look at Russian state exams (EGE)?
It depends on the country and university. Most look at school grades, a language certificate and their own tests: the SAT or ACT in the USA if the college requires it, the PCE at Spanish public universities, TOLC in Italy. Some universities also accept EGE results, for example Koç in Istanbul. Taking the EGE anyway keeps a back-up option at home.
Can I apply before I receive my school certificate?
Yes. For the UK, the USA, Canada and Korea you apply in the autumn or winter of your final year with your current grades and send the final certificate in the summer. The offer is then usually conditional and becomes final once you meet its conditions.
What is a foundation year and what does it cost?
A preparatory year before a bachelor’s for students whose school certificate the university does not accept directly. The price depends on the country and provider: Twente Pathway College in the Netherlands, for example, costs ≈ $21,200 (€19,000) on its engineering track for September 2026. Before paying, make sure your target university accepts the foundation result.
When should I start preparing?
Ideally in the year before your final year. You need to pick countries, confirm your certificate is accepted and take the language test a year ahead, because most deadlines fall between October and January of the final year.
How much does a year cost?
From ≈ $13,600 in Germany (a tuition-free public university and student housing) to $90,000 or more at private US universities. See the country-by-country breakdown on what studying abroad costs.
How much does StudyU charge?
The first consultation is free. A university shortlist in one country starts from $700, and admission support from $1,000. The exact price depends on the case: we confirm it before the contract, once we know the student’s background, goals and request. University fees, translations and visa fees are paid separately.
