John Cabot University (JCU) is an American liberal arts university in Rome's Trastevere district, founded in 1972. It is accredited by the US Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and authorised by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) to operate in Italy as an American university. Its degrees are US degrees, not Italian lauree: if you continue studying in Italy, the receiving university evaluates them under the rules for foreign qualifications. Teaching is in English, the bachelor's takes four years, and tuition for 2027/28 is $26,780 (€23,700) a year for students billed in euros.

Who John Cabot suits
| Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|
| A US-style curriculum with electives and small classes in central Rome | Fees far above Italian public universities |
| A degree that JCU and the Italian ARDI database place at the level of a laurea | The degree is not Italian, so public-sector jobs and regulated professions in Italy need separate recognition |
| Strong humanities: art history, international affairs, classical studies | No medicine, engineering or law |
| An AACSB-accredited business school | The bachelor's lasts four years |
| University-managed apartments in Trastevere | Housing places are limited and need an application and deposit on time |
JCU suits students who want an American degree and life in Rome, and who plan graduate study in the United States, the UK or Europe or a career in an international setting. If budget and an Italian degree matter more, see public English-taught options in English-taught degrees in Italy and compare with Sapienza and LUISS. Rome's universities are compared in universities in Rome, and our Italy study hub covers the rest.
Not to be confused with James Cook University
Two universities use the abbreviation JCU. John Cabot University is an American university in Rome. James Cook University is a public Australian university with campuses in Queensland and Singapore; see our James Cook University profile. Before paying an application fee, check the address: John Cabot's website is johncabot.edu.
Legal status and recognition of the degree
JCU is incorporated as a not-for-profit organisation in Delaware and licensed to award degrees by the Delaware Department of Education. Its institutional accreditor, MSCHE, is a regional commission recognised by the US Secretary of Education; MSCHE last reaffirmed JCU's accreditation in 2018. In Italy the university operates as an American university with MUR authorisation.
In practice: - The degree is American. The registrar's page states that JCU degrees are US university degrees whose use in Italy follows the rules for recognising foreign qualifications. - The level matches a laurea. Through the Italian ARDI database and the CIMEA centre, graduates obtain a Statement of Correspondence: the JCU BA corresponds to a first-cycle Laurea and the MA to a Laurea Magistrale. - Italian graduate study is open. With that statement or a Declaration of Value (Dichiarazione di valore), graduates can apply for a Laurea Magistrale or a first-level Master, and the Italian university decides on admission. For JCU degrees the declaration comes from the Italian consulate in Philadelphia; the process takes six to eight months, and the registrar assists non-EU graduates for $230 (€200). If your school-leaving certificate is not Italian, the request also needs a separate declaration of value for that certificate, issued by the Italian consulate responsible for the place where it was awarded, so it is easier to arrange before you leave home. - Public employment and regulated professions in Italy require separate recognition under the rules of each competition or profession.
Recognition in your home country follows that country's rules and is decided by its competent authority.
Programmes
Bachelor of Arts (120 US credits, usually 40 courses over four years): Art and Design, Art History, Business Administration, International Business, Marketing, Classical Studies, Communications, Computer and Information Science, Economics and Finance, English Literature, History, Humanistic Studies, International Affairs, Italian Studies, Political Science and Psychological Science. Majors can be combined with minors such as Criminology, Entrepreneurship or Digital Media Arts and Production.
Graduate degrees: MA in Art History and MA in International Affairs. A two-year Associate of Arts is also available.
Bachelor's admission
JCU accepts its own online application or the Common App. You will need: - the application form and a non-refundable fee of $60 (€50); only US and Canadian citizens may pay in dollars - three 200-word essays on three of five prompts - official secondary (and any university) transcripts with certified English translations - two teacher recommendations or evaluation forms - an online admissions interview - proof of English - SAT or ACT scores, optionally
JCU does not publish a separate rule for 11-year school systems such as Russia's; the admissions committee reviews grades and documents as a whole. Advanced standing is granted for 13-year national certificates such as the Italian maturità, so graduates of 11-year schools normally complete the full four years. JCU's admissions committee decides. If you are weighing the Italian system against the American one, our guide to bachelor's degrees in Italy helps.
English requirements and ENLUS
| Test | Direct admission | ENLUS II (B2) | ENLUS I (B1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 95+ | 72–94 | 42–71 |
| IELTS | C1 level | B2 level | B1 level |
| Cambridge | C1 Advanced 180+ | B2 First 160–180 | B1 Preliminary 140–160 |
Duolingo results are accepted but individually reviewed by the English department and the admissions committee, and JCU's own placement test can replace an external exam. No test is needed after two years of study in an English-medium US, UK or similar system.
Applicants below the direct-entry level can take ENLUS, a 15-week academic English programme of more than 200 hours that follows the regular semester calendar. ENLUS II students may also take one credit-bearing course. ENLUS itself carries no academic credit, and its enrolment deposit is non-refundable.
Application deadlines
| Autumn | Apply by | Decision | Deposit | Full payment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early Action | 15 November | 15 December | 15 May | 15 July |
| Regular Decision | 1 March | rolling | 15 May | 15 July |
| Late Decision I | 1 May | rolling | 15 May | 15 July |
For spring, Regular Decision closes on 15 October and Late Decision I on 15 November; the 15 December Late Decision II round is closed to students who need a study visa. JCU notes that more scholarship and aid money is available early in the cycle, so for autumn 2027 applying by 15 November 2026 pays off.
Tuition and fees
Rates for students billed in euros (citizens of countries other than the US and Canada; the billing currency is fixed for your whole time at JCU):
| Item | Autumn | Spring | Academic year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-time tuition, 10–17 credits, 2027/28 | $13,390 (€11,850) | $13,390 (€11,850) | $26,780 (€23,700) |
| Full-time tuition, 2026/27 (for comparison) | $12,820 (€11,350) | $12,820 (€11,350) | $25,650 (€22,700) |
| Residence permit (each first request or renewal) | $200 (€180) | ||
| Meal plan (recommended) | $540 (€480) | $540 (€480) | $1,080 (€960) |
| Total 2027/28 before insurance | $28,060 (€24,840) |
JCU's own table shows a total of €24,870 because it adds the one-off €30 declaration of presence, which applies only to visas shorter than 150 days; full-degree students do not pay it.
Tuition includes a €320 student activity fee covering computer labs, events and sports facilities, plus airport pickup and orientation week for new students. Non-EU degree students who need a long-stay visa are automatically enrolled in the CISI health plan for their first year at $78 a month. Four years at the 2027/28 rate come to about $107,100 (€94,800) before future increases.
A full-year budget. JCU's 2026/27 estimate adds, on top of tuition: JCU housing $11,980 (€10,600), food $4,160 (€3,680), books and materials $1,130 (€1,000), transport $3,240 (€2,870), personal expenses $3,750 (€3,320), insurance $810 (€720), and permit and visa costs $560 (€500). With tuition the year comes to about $51,280 (€45,390), excluding US federal loan fees that do not apply to international students. For lawful payment routes from Russia, see how to pay for studies abroad from Russia; for national comparisons, universities in Italy for international students.
Scholarships
- Global Explorer Scholarship — full tuition for up to three students in each autumn intake, based on academic excellence, leadership and commitment to positive impact.
- Presidential Scholarship — up to $7,910 (€7,000) a year on admission for strong academic records, renewable with a cumulative GPA of 2.67.
- JCU Assistance Grant — need-based, up to $4,520 (€4,000) a year, assessed on family income documents.
- Several regional and named awards target specific countries or schools; none on the website is aimed at applicants from Russia or Kazakhstan.
Merit awards need a separate application; the committee reviews every award you qualify for and grants the single highest one. Scholarships do not cover housing, travel or personal costs, and JCU's scholarship committee decides. Wider options are in scholarships in Italy.
Housing
JCU runs its own shared apartments with equipped kitchens; the basic option was estimated at $5,990 (€5,300) a semester for 2026/27: - Gianicolo Residence — 70 apartments for about 250 students, five minutes' walk from the Guarini campus - Lungara Apartments — opposite one of the campuses, apartments for three to nine students - Trastevere Apartments — about 150 students, 25 minutes on foot or 15 by public transport - Neighborhood Apartments — regular Roman flats nearby during the autumn and spring semesters
Buildings have security and Resident Assistants. Contracts run per semester or, for degree students, for the full academic year. Demand exceeds supply, and an application counts only when the deposit arrives by the deadline. For the wider market, see student housing in Italy.
Visa and residence permit
After admission, JCU's admissions office sends the visa documents, which require registration for at least 12 credits. You then apply at the Italian consulate responsible for your place of residence: the Moscow consulate general covers all of Russia except St Petersburg and the north-western regions served by the consulate general in St Petersburg; within the Moscow district, Moscow residents file through VMS and residents of other regions through Almaviva centres, while Kazakh citizens apply at the Italian embassy in Astana. JCU advises starting at once, since a visa can take two months or longer. The consulate decides.
The MUR circular sets out Universitaly pre-enrolment and the general visa cut-off dates (30 November for 2026/27 and 31 October for 2027/28) for programmes at Italian universities and AFAM institutions. JCU is an American university, and its instructions for degree-seeking students do not mention Universitaly: the visa documents come from JCU's admissions office. If the consulate asks for anything beyond that packet, follow its list. The consulate assesses the financial position of the student and family. For students at Italian universities the 2026/27 minimum is $11,500 (€10,179.85) a year; check the amount and statements required in your case against JCU's visa packet and the consulate's page. Our guides to the Italian student visa and to studying in Italy as a Russian citizen cover bank statements, parental income and the Moscow and Astana procedures.
Within eight days of arrival you must request the permesso di soggiorno. JCU staff take new students to the post office for the receipt and to the central Questura for fingerprinting; missing that appointment costs $280 (€250) and puts the application at risk. The card is ready after 50–60 days, is valid for up to a year and is renewed annually without a new visa.
Common mistakes
- Confusing John Cabot University with James Cook University. Different countries, systems and fees.
- Treating the JCU degree as Italian. It is a US degree; using it in Italy requires a statement of correspondence or a declaration of value.
- Planning around the Universitaly procedure and dates. For JCU students the visa documents come from the university's admissions office, and the consulate sets the final list.
- Applying for spring in December. The 15 December round is closed to visa students.
- Leaving housing to the last minute. JCU apartments go to students who submit the application and deposit on time.
FAQ
Is John Cabot University Italian or American?
American. JCU is incorporated in Delaware, accredited by MSCHE and awards US degrees, while operating in Italy with MUR authorisation. For admission to an Italian master's programme, the receiving Italian university evaluates the degree.
How much does John Cabot University cost?
For 2027/28 bachelor's tuition is €23,700 ($26,780) a year for students billed in euros, or €24,840 with the permit fee and meal plan. JCU estimates a full year in Rome, including housing and living costs, at about €45,000.
What English level does John Cabot require?
Direct admission needs TOEFL iBT 95, IELTS at C1 level or Cambridge C1 Advanced with 180. Applicants at B2 or B1 may be placed in the 15-week ENLUS programme first; the admissions committee makes that decision.
Do I need Universitaly to apply to John Cabot?
Under MUR rules Universitaly is used for admission to Italian universities and AFAM programmes. JCU awards US degrees, and its visa instructions do not mention the portal: JCU's admissions office sends the visa documents. The Italian consulate for your place of residence decides on the visa and sets the final document list.
Where do Russian citizens apply for a study visa for John Cabot?
At the Italian consulate for their place of residence; within the Moscow consulate general's district through VMS (Moscow and region) or Almaviva centres (other regions). You need JCU's visa packet, proof of funds and insurance; the consulate decides, which can take two months or more.
Does John Cabot offer scholarships to international students?
Yes: the Presidential Scholarship of up to €7,000 a year, the full-tuition Global Explorer award for three autumn entrants and a need-based grant of up to €4,000. The scholarship committee decides, and more money goes to early applicants.
