Management Information Systems in Turkey
MIS (Yönetim Bilişim Sistemleri) sits between business and IT. Here is what the degree contains, how it differs from computer engineering, and why 2026–27 fees in Istanbul vary roughly sixfold.
The short answer
Management Information Systems (MIS), listed in Turkish as Yönetim Bilişim Sistemleri, is a four-year bachelor's that combines programming, databases, systems analysis and data analytics with accounting, statistics and economics. The 2026 YÖK Atlas catalogue lists it at 47 private and 49 state universities, many of them teaching in English. For 2026–27, private Istanbul universities charge from $4,200 a year (Üsküdar, Turkish-taught) and $4,500 (Medipol, English-taught) up to a $25,000 standard rate at Özyeğin.
The price gap does not mean a sixfold difference in content: first-year and second-year courses look similar almost everywhere. What differs is the depth of programming, company projects, accreditation, campus and the size of scholarships. Compare curricula and practicums, not just price lists.
MIS compared with neighbouring degrees
- Computer engineering or computer science has more mathematics, algorithms and low-level programming, and trains people who build software. MIS trains people who choose, implement and connect systems to a company's processes; it includes programming, but less of it. See Computer Science.
- Information systems engineering (Bilişim Sistemleri Mühendisliği) is an engineering degree with an engineering workload, while MIS usually sits in a business or economics faculty. See Information Systems Engineering.
- Business administration gives a broad management base; MIS adds databases, systems analysis and analytics and prepares you to work between the business side and the IT department.

What a graduate should be able to do
Describe a business process and its system requirements so that a developer can build from them; design and populate a database; build a report or dashboard for a manager; select and roll out an ERP or CRM system; and work out the cost and payback of an IT project. If a university's plan has no systems analysis and design and no database course, you are probably looking at a business degree with some computer classes.

For graduate study, İstinye charges $8,500 for its whole English-taught MIS master's with thesis and BAU $12,000 for its whole Turkish-taught non-thesis master's (both 2026–27). Admission
The private universities above admit international students to the bachelor's on school results through an online application; there is no entrance exam in computing. Two things matter more: language and maths. English-taught programmes need a certificate on the university's list or its own English exam. BAU, for instance, exempts students from the preparatory year with TOEFL iBT 72 or PTE Academic 55 and does not list IELTS, while Haliç accepts IELTS 6.5. Bilgi's plan puts two semesters of calculus in the first year, so weak school maths is the main risk in year one.
Master's applicants need a bachelor's degree; if it is not in business or IT, the university may add preparatory courses. BAU's and Haliç's Turkish-taught master's require confident Turkish. At Kadir Has the thesis master's consists of eight courses, a seminar and a thesis, and the non-thesis track of twelve courses and a project. The university decides admission, and a Turkish consulate issues the student visa on the strength of the acceptance letter.
Careers
Typical first roles are business analyst, data analyst in sales or finance, ERP or CRM implementation consultant, business-application support specialist, junior IT project manager and e-commerce specialist. With experience, graduates move into product ownership and lead implementation projects or IT units.
To work in Turkey you need a work permit arranged by the employer. English is often the working language in international companies and tech teams, but implementing systems for Turkish companies is hard without Turkish. MIS skills travel well between countries, because databases, analytics and systems design do not depend on local law.
A good fit if you
- are interested in both business and technology but do not want to become a pure programmer
- like working out how a company runs and turning that into system requirements
- can handle school algebra and are ready for calculus
Compare alternatives first if you
- want to write complex software and algorithms: look at Computer Science or computer engineering
- really dislike maths and statistics: management or marketing will suit you better
- are mainly interested in online selling: look at E-Commerce and Management
Common mistakes
- Treating MIS as computer engineering. They are different diplomas with different first jobs.
- Choosing by the highest price. Core courses at $4,500 and at $25,000 are similar; compare projects, practicums, accreditation and scholarships.
- Comparing an annual fee with a programme fee. BAU's $12,000 master's covers the whole programme; Kadir Has's $20,000 is per year.
- Forgetting the preparatory year. Without an accepted language certificate, the degree takes five years.
- Expecting an IT job without a portfolio. Practicums and the final project are what employers will ask about.
Before you pay
- Check the exact title in YÖK Atlas: Yönetim Bilişim Sistemleri, not Bilişim Sistemleri ve Teknolojileri (the name of Okan's programme, for example) or an engineering degree.
- Read the curriculum for databases, systems analysis and design, and programming.
- Ask about required practicums, the final project and company partnerships.
- Confirm the language of teaching and which certificates exempt you from the preparatory year.
- Check whether the price is per year or per programme, and the scholarship conditions.

Solid school maths. Bilgi's 2026–27 plan has Calculus I and II in the first year and Calculus for Economists plus two statistics courses in the second. That is less than engineering but more than a management degree.

It depends on the university. Haliç accepts IELTS 6.5, but BAU's list for skipping the preparatory year names TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge exams and not IELTS. Check the list of your chosen university before booking a test.
