The University of Waikato is a public university in Hamilton with a second campus in coastal Tauranga, and its 2027 academic year starts on 1 March. The Russian school certificate is not in Waikato's table for direct bachelor's entry, but the university's own college publishes clear thresholds for Russian applicants: Foundation Studies based on attestat grades, and an International Diploma based on the Unified State Exam (EGE) certificate that leads straight into year two. International bachelor's tuition in 2027 ranges from $19,290 (NZD 34,020) to $28,780 (NZD 50,762) a year. You can apply at any time, but the scholarship of up to NZD 15,000 ($8,500) for a March start must be requested by 30 November.

Who Waikato suits
Waikato is worth a look if budget and flexible entry matter: some BA and BSocSc majors start at NZD 34,020 a year, and the college lets school leavers reach year two of business or computing. It suits future business and finance specialists, computer scientists and cyber-security students, engineers, environmental scientists and marine scientists; the marine science BSc is taught in Tauranga, by the coast.

Entry routes from a Russian school
Waikato's undergraduate table lists countries whose school qualifications it accepts directly; Russia is not among them. The safer route for Russian school leavers is the University of Waikato College, a pathway college on the Hamilton campus run by Navitas NZ on the university's behalf, which publishes Russia-specific thresholds:

After Foundation Studies you start a Waikato bachelor's in year one. The International Diploma (Business) leads into year two of the Bachelor of Business in any major; the International Diploma (Computer Science) leads into year two of the BSc (Computer Science or Data Analytics) or the Bachelor of Computer Science. Foundation includes compulsory English and academic skills plus electives such as biology, business, calculus, chemistry, physics, and mathematics and statistics; not every elective runs each trimester. The college also offers academic English in 10-week blocks.
Note that Russia stopped issuing paper Unified State Exam (EGE) certificates in 2014; results are held in a federal database. Before applying, ask the college which official statement of results it will accept in place of the certificate.
If you have completed a year at a Russian university, you can apply for direct entry and request External Credit. Waikato's Guaranteed Credit Agreements cover universities in China, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Vietnam, not Russia, so credit is assessed case by case.

Waikato law has no separate competitive selection into year two: students are selected at application and progress automatically as long as they pass each year. Add the compulsory Student Services Fee, which depends on campus and study length, and insurance; an annual Studentsafe policy costs NZD 899 ($510) at the rate published in September 2026. For the visa you pay the first year or the whole programme and obtain a receipt, and Waikato explicitly allows payment after Immigration New Zealand approves the visa in principle. If you pay early and withdraw before your programme starts, you get a full refund minus a NZD 500 administration fee; after the start, during the paper-deletion period, NZD 2,000 is withheld.

There is no single closing date for international applications: apply at any time and choose your trimester in the form. Scholarships, housing and the visa set the real deadlines.

Immigration New Zealand advises applying for the visa at least three months before travel, with peak demand from October to March, so aim to hold an offer by November for a March start.
How to apply
- Choose a programme and check academic and English requirements; if you need a pathway, apply to the college through its own online form.
- Apply online and choose your trimester, directly or through an approved recruitment agent.
- Upload documents. Scans are enough for assessment, but verified copies are required before enrolment; a notary, lawyer, official of the issuing institution, embassy or consulate can verify them by signing, dating and stamping the copy.
- Apply for scholarships. The Scholarships tab in MyWaikato appears only after you submit your study application.
- Accept your Offer of Place in MyWaikato; it is conditional if you have not yet met every requirement.
- Pay a year of tuition before the visa or after approval in principle, and apply for the visa with your receipt.
- Complete enrolment on arrival by showing your student visa.

Scholarships
The main award for international students is the Vice-Chancellor's International Excellence Scholarship: up to NZD 15,000 ($8,500) towards tuition for new international undergraduate and taught postgraduate students with excellent results. You apply in MyWaikato after submitting your study application; decisions are made at the end of each month except December and can take up to eight weeks from the closing date.

Regional versions exist for China, India, South-East Asia and the Pacific; Russian citizens apply for the general one. The automatic International Entrance Scholarship for School Leavers is only for international students finishing school in New Zealand, and Waikato states that it offers no fully funded scholarships. Immigration New Zealand requires NZD 20,000 ($11,340) per year for living costs; at NZD 446–510 a week, 40 weeks in a catered Hamilton hall alone would come to NZD 17,840–20,400, so treat the visa amount as a floor.

Visa, work and after graduation
Immigration New Zealand issues the Fee Paying Student Visa. You need an offer, a year's tuition paid (or the whole course if shorter), NZD 20,000 per year of living costs and insurance. For Russian and Kazakh citizens INZ's fee tool shows NZD 850 ($480), which already includes the NZD 100 visitor levy (IVL); 80% of decisions take up to 8 weeks.
Russian and Kazakh citizens staying longer than 6 months need a chest X-ray from a panel physician; applicants aged 17+ whose stay reaches 24 months need police certificates under 6 months old. You may work up to 25 hours a week in term and full-time in holidays. After a bachelor's, the Post-Study Work Visa lasts as long as your study, up to 3 years; after a master's with 30+ weeks of full-time study in New Zealand it lasts 3 years; it is granted once.

Common mistakes
- Applying for year one with the attestat only. Russia is not in the direct-entry table; plan Foundation or the International Diploma.
- Overlooking the EGE route. For the International Diploma the college looks at your EGE certificate, and the diploma leads straight into year two of business or computing.
- Missing 30 November. Russian school leavers have no automatic scholarship; without a VCIE application there is no award for March.
- Leaving the hall application late. The first round of offers for the next year goes to applications received by 30 September; later applicants get whatever places remain.
- Paying before visa approval without need. Waikato accepts payment after approval in principle.
- Picking a campus at random. Not every programme runs on both campuses; engineering years 2–3 are in Hamilton only.
FAQ
Where is the University of Waikato?
The main campus is in Hamilton, on the North Island south of Auckland, and the second campus is in central Tauranga on the Bay of Plenty coast. Waikato programmes are also delivered at Hangzhou City University in China (formerly Zhejiang University City College).
Can I enter Waikato with Russian EGE results?
Yes, into the college's International Diploma rather than year one. For Russia it requires the EGE results certificate, evidence of numeracy and IELTS 5.5; after the diploma you continue the BBus, BSc or Bachelor of Computer Science from year two.
How do Standard and Accelerated Foundation differ?
Standard takes two trimesters and accepts grade 3 in three academic subjects; Accelerated takes one trimester and requires grade 4 and stronger IELTS writing. In 2027 Standard costs NZD 29,497 and Accelerated NZD 14,748.
When does the academic year start?
Trimester A 2027 starts on 1 March, with orientation from 22 February. You can also start in July (Trimester B) or November (Trimester C) on selected programmes.
Does Waikato offer free tuition through scholarships?
No. The university states that it has no fully funded scholarships; the VCIE covers up to NZD 15,000 of tuition and the rest is paid by the student or family.
