Who UC suits
UC is a strong option for future engineers, data scientists, computer scientists, geologists, ecologists and foresters, and for students who want New Zealand's second-largest city. Engineering starts with a common first year before you choose a discipline, and the postgraduate list includes applied AI, applied data science, a Master of Antarctic Studies and a four-year Bachelor of Forestry Science.
It is not the place for medicine; see the University of Otago. Entry routes from a Russian school
UC assesses overseas qualifications through its Check What You Need tool, which shows the conditions for your country and qualification. For UC International College (UCIC), which teaches on the UC campus, the thresholds for the Russian attestat are published:

Science applicants need maths/calculus, and engineering applicants also need physics and chemistry. The foundation certificate runs over two trimesters: core academic skills courses, a numeracy elective and three courses in Arts, Business, Engineering or Science. The diploma suits students who already know their field, with extra language, academic and wellbeing support during a real first-year curriculum.
Engineering: first year and entry to a discipline
The Bachelor of Engineering with Honours takes four years (480 points). Year one has nine courses: six compulsory and three that depend on the discipline you are considering, so you keep options open. The next three years are in one discipline, sometimes with a minor. Entry to year 2 is limited and based on first-year performance, and every student completes 800 hours (about 100 days) of practical work.
Prerequisites for New Zealand school leavers are calculus, physics and chemistry; chemistry is not required for computer, electrical and electronic, mechatronics or software engineering. International students can enter year 2 of the BE(Hons) through the Diploma in University Studies. Fees in 2027 are NZD 49,540 ($28,080) for year one and NZD 54,180 ($30,710) for each later year.
Tuition in 2027 and 2028
Fees depend on your courses: lab subjects cost more than lecture-based ones, and a 30-point course costs twice a 15-point course. UC publishes estimates for 2026, 2027 and 2028, which makes it easier to budget a whole degree.

All students pay the Student Services Levy: NZD 10.30 per point in 2026, or NZD 1,236 ($700) for 120 on-campus points, capped at NZD 1,545 a year. International students must hold medical and travel insurance for the whole period of study. Most students pay the fee estimate in their Offer of Place in advance for the visa; the final Statement of Fees arrives with the Enrolment Agreement and any difference is charged or refunded.

How to apply
- Check requirements for your programme and qualification in Check What You Need, or choose a UCIC programme.
- Create a myUC account and apply. UC assesses university admission and programme entry at the same time.
- Upload evidence: transcripts and completion certificates, the grading scale, translations of all non-English documents and your English test result. Without suitable evidence the application may lapse.
- Apply for scholarships in the same myUC account.
- Receive your Offer of Place. If it is conditional on English, upload your results on the Information Required page.
- Pay the offer amount and apply for your visa. The final invoice comes with the Enrolment Agreement.

The payment on accepting a place is usually NZD 1,150 (NZD 3,040 at Rochester and Rutherford, NZD 1,300 at Arcady). From year two many students rent privately: UC estimates about NZD 436 ($250) a week for a room in a four-bedroom house in Ilam, including NZD 200 rent and NZD 145 food, plus a bond of around NZD 800 and one to two weeks' rent in advance.
Master's and PhD
Many UC master's degrees have a Special Programme Fee: a fixed price paid at the start, even if study takes 18–24 months. If it is not paid in full and study runs past a year, the next year costs more.

Visa and work
Immigration New Zealand decides the Fee Paying Student Visa. You need an offer, tuition paid for a year (or the whole course if shorter), NZD 20,000 ($11,340) per year of living costs and insurance. For Russian and Kazakh citizens INZ's fee tool shows NZD 850 ($480), which already includes the NZD 100 visitor levy (IVL); 80% of decisions take up to 8 weeks, and INZ advises applying at least three months before travel.
Russian and Kazakh citizens staying over 6 months need a chest X-ray from a panel physician; applicants aged 17+ staying 24 months or longer need police certificates under 6 months old. Students may work up to 25 hours a week in term and full-time in holidays. After a bachelor's the Post-Study Work Visa matches the length of study (up to 3 years); after a master's with 30+ weeks of full-time study in New Zealand it is 3 years. From 16 November 2026 INZ accepts applications for a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, giving graduates of level 5–7 qualifications who do not qualify for the Post-Study Work Visa up to 6 months of open work rights.

Common mistakes
- Mixing up the two Canterburys. Different countries, visas and deadlines.
- Missing subject prerequisites. Science streams need calculus; engineering also needs physics and chemistry.
- Missing 31 October. The NZD 15,000 scholarship for February closes before the recommended application deadline.
- Assuming year 2 of engineering is guaranteed. Discipline entry depends on first-year grades.
- Paying a Special Programme Fee only in part. It makes the following year more expensive.
- Budgeting only the visa minimum. A catered hall alone starts at NZD 21,158 in 2027.

Is this the same as Canterbury Christ Church University?
No. The University of Canterbury is in Christchurch, New Zealand (canterbury.ac.nz); Canterbury Christ Church University is a British university in the city of Canterbury, with a different admissions system, visa and fees.
Can a school leaver go straight into year 2?
Yes, through UCIC's Diploma in University Studies (International), an alternative first year that leads into year 2 of the BCom, BE(Hons), BSc or BDataSc. For the Russian attestat it requires GPA 3.5 in four academic subjects and IELTS 5.5.
How much is foundation at UC?
