Hanyang University

Hanyang University is a private university with a wide range of engineering majors and two campuses: Seoul, in Seongdong-gu, and ERICA in the city of Ansan. It ranks 155th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (159th a year earlier) and sits in the 251–300 band of the THE World University Rankings 2026. The key point for international applicants: Hanyang admits on academic record even without Korean, but lets you start a Korean-taught major only with TOPIK 4 or level 4 at its own language institute, IIE. In 2026 a semester cost from $3,866 (₩5,279,000) in the humanities to $5,098 (₩6,960,000) in engineering. The Seoul spring 2027 round closed on 18 September; the next target is fall 2027.

Who Hanyang suits, and who should look elsewhere

Hanyang mainly draws future engineers: the international list includes about twenty engineering majors, from nuclear and automotive engineering to information systems. For applicants without Korean its advantage is that the offer can come before the language. There are only three English-taught programmes, far fewer than at Sungkyunkwan.

Programmes: the Korean track and the English track

English-taught programmes

Citizens of countries Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs treats as English-speaking are exempt from the certificate. The Korean requirement does not apply to the English track. The College of International Studies also runs a Korean-taught programme, Global Content Convergence.

Korean track

Almost every field on the Seoul campus is open to international students:

• engineering: architecture (five years) and architectural engineering, civil and environmental, urban planning, earth resources, electronics, computer science, information systems, electrical and biomedical engineering, materials, chemical, bioengineering, organic and nano, energy, mechanical, nuclear, industrial and automotive engineering;
• humanities and social sciences: Korean, Chinese, English and German language and literature, history, philosophy, political science and international studies, sociology, media and communication, tourism, policy studies and public administration, economics and finance;
• natural sciences: mathematics, physics, chemistry, life science;
• business: business administration (Korean track, first choice only) and finance;
• human ecology: clothing and textiles, food and nutrition, interior design;
• creative fields: music (from voice to traditional Korean instruments), film and theatre, dance, sport.

Some majors (architecture, electronics, computer science, energy, automotive engineering, finance, sport and others) require a personal statement and study plan in English or Korean; creative fields add an audition or portfolio review. The guidelines list every requirement.

Seoul or ERICA

The Seoul campus and ERICA run separate admissions. You can apply to both, but if admitted to both you must register at one. On the Seoul campus you can apply to two majors: that means two online applications, the second costs an extra $20 (₩27,000), and it is considered only if you are not admitted to the first. Business Administration (both tracks) and Media & Communication can only be a first choice.

How to apply to Hanyang, step by step

You qualify as an international applicant only if you and both parents held a foreign nationality before you entered high school; identity and family documents must be valid on the application date. Home schooling, equivalency exams and provisional certificates are not accepted.

1. Choose a campus, track and major. Without Korean, decide in advance whether you are ready for a year at IIE before your degree begins.
2. Prepare documents. Apostilled diploma and transcripts, notarised translation into Korean or English. Notarised copies are valid for six months (for spring 2027, issued after 1 March 2026); apostilled documents do not expire.
3. Apply online at oia.hanyang.ac.kr. After the online window closes you cannot cancel; within the window, the fee is refunded in full if you withdraw.
4. Originals by post only, on A4 and in the order of the guidelines' list. In-person submission is not accepted, for documents or portfolios.
5. Portfolio review and interview, for relevant programmes only.
6. Results and payment. Spring results come in December, payment in January. Only admitted students who need a D-2 visa submit a bank certificate, after results.
7. Without Korean: pay the semester, take a leave of absence, study at IIE to level 4 or pass TOPIK 4, then return to your degree. The maximum length of leave follows university regulations. See our student visa guide.

The spring round closed on 18 September 2026. Fall 2027 dates will appear in new guidelines under Admissions > Notice on oia.hanyang.ac.kr. All times are Korea Standard Time.

Korean and English requirements

Korean track. Proof of Korean is optional at application: TOPIK or an IIE attendance certificate can be attached and helps the review. But you can start your major only with one of these:

• TOPIK or TOPIK IBT level 4 or higher (trial tests do not count);
• a Hanyang IIE transcript at level 4 or higher.

A TOPIK score must still be valid on the first day of online applications. GKS scholars follow NIIED's language rules.

English track. A certificate is compulsory: TOEFL iBT 80 / IELTS 6.0 for Data Science and Business Administration, TOEFL iBT 89 / IELTS 6.5 for International Studies. For Korean, see our TOPIK guide.

Documents and apostille

• online application form and declaration, printed after paying the fee;
• personal statement and study plan, for majors that require them;
• diploma or certificate of expected graduation with an apostille, in Korean or English or with a notarised translation;
• transcripts for all semesters or years on a 100-point scale or showing the maximum grade, with an apostille;
• proof of family relationship; for citizens of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan this is the birth certificate;
• copies of your and your parents' passports;
• English certificate, for the English track;
• optional: TOPIK, IIE certificate, achievements (A-levels, SAT, IB, olympiads, subject clubs);
• if the family renounced Korean citizenship, documents showing the dates.

Current-year graduates send their final apostilled diploma after admission, or the offer may be revoked. Russia and the CIS countries except Turkmenistan issue apostilles; Turkmen documents need consular legalisation. Submitted documents are not returned, so obtain extra originals for your visa in advance.

What studying and living at Hanyang costs

Tuition, fall 2026, per semester

If you have no Korean and go on leave to study at IIE, the university's process has you pay the semester before the leave, and IIE courses are paid separately. Budget for both.

Seoul campus dormitories

* For the quad room the housing site lists the same semester-plus-vacation price as for a triple ($1,210 (₩1,639,000)); this looks like a typo, so confirm the amount in your move-in notice.

Living costs

Hanyang does not publish its own living-cost estimate. A useful benchmark is the government GKS allowance: $10,547 (₩14,400,000) a year, about $879 (₩1,200,000) a month, covering everything including housing and insurance. Scholarships: GKS and Hanyang awards

Admission awards do not stack: if you qualify for several, you receive the largest. Only documents submitted during the application period count, and English-track applicants must attach their certificate to be considered for the English award.

GKS 2027. Hanyang takes part in the GKS-U embassy track as a Type A university; you list up to three universities, at least one of them a regional Type B school. In 2027 the bachelor's university track is only the University-Industry Cooperation (UIC) programme at 10 universities, and Hanyang is not included. Embassy applications run from 15 to 30 September 2026; Russia has three places and Kazakhstan four, but only one of each is in the general programme that can lead to a Seoul Type A university. Institute of International Education (IIE) and the D-4 visa

IIE is Hanyang's language institute. The regular course runs 10 weeks four times a year, 200 hours, levels 1 to 6, plus an intensive level 7 (150 hours). Classes have up to 15 students; most newcomers are placed in the afternoon session (14:00–18:00) and can choose mornings (9:00–13:00) from their second term.

If the certificate is in a parent's name, add proof of relationship. IIE notes that fees may change. After document review it may ask for a guarantor: an employed Korean citizen aged 20 or over, with a notarised letter. Completing IIE level 5 or 6 earns 50% or 100% off your first Hanyang semester. Where you study: Seoul and ERICA

The Seoul campus is in Seongdong-gu, by Hanyang University subway station, and hosts the international office (OIA), IIE and the dormitories listed above. ERICA is in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, with its own international office (global.hanyang.ac.kr), admissions and housing.

Where Hanyang stands in rankings

In QS 2027 Hanyang rose from 159th to 155th, seventh among Korean universities after Seoul National University (38), Yonsei (42), Korea University (52), KAIST (65), POSTECH (106) and Sungkyunkwan (108). In THE 2026 it sits in the 251–300 band, since THE publishes only bands below 200th place. For engineers, the curriculum of the specific major, published on each college's pages, says more than any ranking.

Notes for applicants from Russia and Central Asia

• Family documents. For Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan the university names the birth certificate; for other countries, Russia included, the guidelines accept a birth certificate or another family relationship document.
• Payment is in won; applicants from Russia should arrange a legal transfer route in advance.

Mistakes to avoid

• Assuming admission without TOPIK means study without TOPIK. You need level 4 before your major.
• Notarising too early. For spring 2027, notarised copies had to be issued after 1 March 2026.
• Delivering documents in person. Hanyang accepts post only.
• Listing Business Administration as a second choice. It, like media, is first choice only.
• Applying to the English track without a certificate. It is compulsory, and the scholarship needs a higher score still.
• Not getting spare originals. Submitted documents are not returned, and you will need them again for the visa.
• Sending a provisional certificate instead of a diploma. It is not accepted; current-year graduates send the final apostilled diploma before the semester starts.

Checklist before you apply

• Campus, track and one or two majors chosen; for creative majors, work ready on USB.
• Decided whether you take TOPIK 4 in advance or budget for terms at IIE.
• Diploma and grades apostilled, notarised copies recent, TOEFL or IELTS ready for the English track.
• Parents' passports, your birth certificate and spare originals for the visa collected.

FAQ

Can I get into Hanyang without Korean?

You can be admitted, but not start a Korean-taught major. Offers are based on academic results; classes in the major begin only with TOPIK 4 or IIE level 4, and until then you study Korean on a leave of absence. The English track has no such requirement.

Which Hanyang programmes are taught in English?

On the Seoul campus: Data Science, Business Administration (Global Management) and International Studies. The first two need TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.0, International Studies TOEFL iBT 89 or IELTS 6.5; Data Science and International Studies include an English interview.

How much does Hanyang cost?

In fall 2026 a semester cost $3,900 (₩5,279,000) in the humanities and social sciences, $4,540 (₩6,150,000) in the natural sciences, $5,140 (₩6,960,000) in engineering and $5,780 (₩7,820,000) in music. A Seoul dormitory bed starts at $555 (₩754,000) a semester.

When should I apply?

For spring 2027 the online window ran from 1 to 18 September 2026, documents by 30 September, results on 18 December. Fall 2027 dates will appear in new guidelines on the international office website.

What scholarships does Hanyang offer?

At admission: HISP (100%, 70% or 50% for eight semesters) and first-semester awards for TOPIK 5–6, IIE levels 5–6 and English (TOEFL 90 / IELTS 6.5). Enrolled students can receive HIEA with GPA 3.0+ and a TOPIK award. The government GKS is available through the embassy track.
