University of Essex: Admission, Fees and Scholarships for 2027

📍 the UK

The University of Essex, a public university in Colchester about an hour from London, is best known for economics, politics, sociology and law. The Russia entry table lists only the IB and the SAT for undergraduate study and does not mention the Russian school certificate, so the usual route for school leavers is a Foundation Certificate or International Year One at the University of Essex International College, which Kaplan runs on campus. In 2026/27 the foundation costs from $27,230 (£20,580) and BA Economics costs $29,910 (£22,600) a year. Applicants domiciled in Russia or Kazakhstan who start a bachelor's in 2027/28 are considered automatically for a $6,620 (£5,000) discount on the first year.

The Southend campus closed in summer 2026 and its courses moved to Colchester, so Essex now teaches at Colchester and at Loughton, home of the East 15 Acting School. Essex is not a Russell Group member.

Who Essex suits

Strengths Limits
Strong national standing in economics, politics and sociology A school certificate alone does not open the first year
Automatic £5,000 discounts at both bachelor's and master's level The undergraduate discount covers year one only
A pathway college on campus with full access to university facilities The college is a separate provider (Kaplan) with its own contract and fees
Campus halls, including low-cost rooms with shared facilities Colchester is a small town, about an hour by train from London
January starts on some master's courses Master's entry depends on the course and the modules in your degree

Essex makes sense for applicants heading into economics, politics, international relations, sociology or law who want a campus university within reach of London. A similar campus option at a different price is the University of Kent in Canterbury; for the wider picture see study in the UK.

After 11 years of school: the International College

On its Russia page Essex lists only the International Baccalaureate (most courses ask for 29–32 points) and the SAT (1100 out of 1600 with at least 550 in each section) for undergraduate entry. The Russian attestat is not on that list, so school leavers normally start at the University of Essex International College (UEIC). The Essex Pathways foundation year run by the university itself is open to UK and EU applicants only.

UEIC course Who it is for 2026/27 fee
Foundation Certificate school leavers; leads to year one $27,230–30,040 (£20,580–22,700)
International Year One school leavers with good grades; leads to year two $28,000–30,080 (£21,160–22,730)
Pre-Master's graduates who miss the grade or English requirement from $29,910 (£22,600)

The college sits on the Colchester campus, and its students use the university library and sports facilities. Passing at the required level with good attendance leads to your chosen Essex degree. International Year One combines preparation with first-year content, so the whole route still takes three years; it suits strong students in business, economics, computer science, life sciences and politics. Kaplan takes £500 off its own accommodation if you book within two weeks of receiving your place.

How a foundation compares with International Year One and A-levels is explained in our foundation year guide, and the general route for 11-year school graduates is in UK university after 11 years of school.

Undergraduate entry and fees

Take BA Economics as an example. It lasts three years, with an optional placement or study-abroad year, and asks for IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each skill. The international fee for 2026/27 entry is $29,910 (£22,600) a year, and the university warns that fees rise in each year of study. A placement year costs 20% of the standard fee and a year abroad 15%. Applicants slightly below the IELTS score can take a pre-sessional English course at Essex instead of resitting the test.

Undergraduate applications go through UCAS; the equal-consideration deadline for 2027 entry is 13 January 2027. Our guide to applying to UK universities walks through the form.

Master's degrees

For graduates of Russian universities, Essex says many master's courses consider a bachelor's degree averaging 4 out of 5 or above, with higher thresholds on some courses. The International College's Pre-Master's covers applicants who fall short on grades or English.

Example: MSc Data Science, one year, starting January 2027, costs international students $31,600 (£23,875). It requires at least a UK 2:2 equivalent in a relevant subject such as mathematics, computing or economics, or a degree in another field that included three suitable modules from the university's list, plus IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each skill.

Scholarships

  • International Undergraduate Scholarship (2027/28 entry): $6,620 (£5,000) off the first undergraduate year. Russia and Kazakhstan are on the list of eligible countries, and no application is needed: Essex assesses eligibility from the country of domicile and fee status on your application.
  • Global Talent Masters Scholarship (2027/28 entry): $6,620 (£5,000) off master's tuition for self-funded international students, awarded automatically on the basis of bachelor's results or a completed master's.
  • International Baccalaureate Excellence Scholarship: $2,650 (£2,000) for the first year with 34 IB points or more.
  • Loyalty discount: up to 20% off for Essex graduates who continue to the next level.

The university decides every award under its own rules, published for each academic year. More funding routes are listed in scholarships in the UK.

Halls and living costs

Under Essex's own rules, students who apply on time and meet the conditions of its accommodation scheme can keep a room in halls for the whole course; the university's accommodation team allocates rooms. Undergraduate lets run for 39 weeks, from late September to the end of June, so belongings can stay in the room over the holidays; postgraduate lets run for 44 or 50 weeks.

Hall and room, 2026/27 Weekly rent
North Towers, room with shared facilities $170 (£127.89)
South Towers, enhanced room, shared facilities $190 (£142.87)
Wolfson Court, room with shared facilities $200 (£147.91)
University Quays, en-suite, 50-week contract $230 (£171.92)
South Courts, en-suite $250 (£190.12)
Self-contained flat (North or South Towers) from $370 (£277.90)

For the visa you show £1,171 a month for nine months, $13,950 (£10,539), rising to $14,330 (£10,827) for applications from 30 November 2026, plus any unpaid first-year tuition. See our student housing guide, and use only lawful payment routes from Russia (how to pay for studies abroad from Russia).

Student visa and post-study work

  • The CAS comes from the university or the International College; you can apply up to six months before the course starts.
  • The visa fee is $740 (£558); the Immigration Health Surcharge is $1,030 (£776) for each year of leave.
  • Funds must be held for 28 consecutive days, with the statement no older than 31 days when you apply.
  • Residents of Russia and Kazakhstan need a tuberculosis test at a GOV.UK-approved clinic.
  • Foundation students need IELTS for UKVI or another approved SELT taken at an accredited centre; see English tests for a UK student visa.
  • The Graduate visa lasts 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027.

UK Visas and Immigration grants or refuses the visa. Details are in our UK student visa and Graduate Route guides.

Common mistakes

  • Applying to year one with the attestat alone: the Russia entry table does not list it, so without the IB or SAT expect to be pointed to the college.
  • Applying for the Essex Pathways foundation year, which is closed to international students.
  • Relying on Southend campus information: the campus closed in summer 2026.
  • Expecting the £5,000 undergraduate discount every year; it applies to year one only.
  • Picking a master's by title without checking the modules in your degree, which Data Science screens closely.

FAQ

Can I enter the University of Essex after 11 years of school?

Usually not: for Russia the undergraduate entry table lists only the IB and the SAT, and admissions decides on any other qualification. Attestat holders take a Foundation Certificate or International Year One at the International College, and the university decides on progression once the course is completed.

How much does the University of Essex cost?

International students pay $29,910 (£22,600) a year for BA Economics (2026/27 entry), and MSc Data Science starting in January 2027 costs $31,600 (£23,875). Foundation courses at the International College cost $27,230–30,040 in 2026/27.

What discounts can Russian applicants get?

Undergraduates starting in 2027/28 receive £5,000 off year one, and master's students receive the £5,000 Global Talent Masters Scholarship; both are automatic with no separate form. The university decides eligibility and the amount under the rules for each academic year.

How is the International College different from the university?

The college is on the Colchester campus but is run by Kaplan, with its own contract, fees and payment rules. Progression depends on reaching the required grades and attendance, and the University of Essex makes the final admission decision.

Where is Essex, and what happened to the Southend campus?

The main campus is Wivenhoe Park in Colchester, and the second is at Loughton, where the East 15 Acting School is based. The university closed its Southend campus in summer 2026 and moved all its courses to Colchester.

Is there housing for international students?

Yes. In 2026/27 a room with shared facilities costs from $170 (£127.89) a week and an en-suite room about $250 (£190.12). Undergraduates rent for 39 weeks; postgraduates for 44 or 50 weeks.
