English Tests for the UK Student Visa in 2026: When You Need IELTS for UKVI, Which SELTs Count and Where to Take Them

For a Student visa to a UK bachelor's or master's degree you do not always need a special "visa" IELTS: a university may assess your English at CEFR B2 itself and accept standard IELTS Academic or another test on its own list. A Secure English Language Test (SELT) from the Home Office list is mandatory for courses below degree level — Foundation, pre-sessional English and college courses. B2 on a SELT means, for example, 5.5 in each part of IELTS for UKVI, 59 in each part of PTE Academic UKVI or 60 in each part of LanguageCert Academic SELT. As of September 2026 the Home Office list has no SELT centres in Russia or Belarus; the nearest are in Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Turkey and the UAE.

Do you need a SELT? Three situations

The University of Glasgow puts it plainly: for degree programmes it makes its own assessment and all tests on its entry list meet the visa requirement; below-degree pre-sessional courses need a UKVI-approved SELT such as IELTS Academic for UKVI or Trinity ISE for UKVI.

Approved tests and scores

Only four-skill tests (reading, writing, listening, speaking) work for a Student visa. Outside the UK, four providers run SELTs:

• Every component must reach the level; the overall score is not enough.
• All components must come from the same test with the same provider; single-component resits depend on provider rules.
• From 6 July 2025 LanguageCert Academic SELT and General SELT replaced the ESOL SELT four-skills test; older results remain valid for two years.
• Trinity College London offers SELTs only inside the UK.
• IELTS Life Skills and speaking-and-listening tests are for family and settlement routes, not Student visas.
• Results are valid for two years from award and must be valid on your application date.

IELTS for UKVI versus standard IELTS

IELTS for UKVI uses the same Academic or General Training format, but it is taken at a Home Office-approved SELT centre with extra identity checks, and the result carries a UKVI number that UKVI verifies online. Choose standard IELTS Academic if your university accepts it for your degree; choose IELTS for UKVI for Foundation, pre-sessional and college courses or where the university asks for a SELT. IELTS Online is not on the SELT list.

Where to take a SELT if you live in Russia or Central Asia

Check on the provider's website that the centre is open and has dates — the Home Office list changes several times a month — and check entry rules for your passport in the country where you will sit the test. Pearson states that PTE Academic UKVI results typically arrive within 48 hours.

Booking and test day

1. Book on the provider's own website; the Home Office recommends official channels and warns that third parties must be recognised by the provider and charge no more than the official price.
2. Book the SELT version: IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert Academic/General SELT or Skills for English UKVI.
3. Use your details exactly as in your passport.
4. Bring your original passport; copies and emergency travel documents are refused.
5. You should normally be able to test within 28 days of booking, though not necessarily nearby.

Using your result

You receive a SELT reference number and enter it in the visa application instead of uploading a certificate: UKVI number (IELTS), SELT URN (Pearson), Candidate URN (LanguageCert) or URN (PSI). Omitting it can lead to refusal.

When you do not need to prove English

• You hold a UK degree taught in English.
• You hold an English-taught bachelor's degree or higher from another country, confirmed by an Ecctis code.
• You are a national of a majority English-speaking country on the GOV.UK list or of Canada (Russia and Kazakhstan are not on it).
• You proved your English in a previous UK visa application.

After graduation

The GOV.UK eligibility list for the Graduate visa contains no separate English requirement. For Skilled Worker, new applicants have needed B2 since 8 January 2026; a UK degree taught in English meets it. See working while studying and the Graduate Route.

Common mistakes

• Taking standard IELTS Academic before a Foundation course that needs a SELT.
• Paying for IELTS for UKVI when the university accepts standard IELTS.
• Missing that one component is below 5.5.
• Booking standard PTE Academic instead of PTE Academic UKVI.
• Relying on IELTS Online for a below-degree visa.
• Testing so early that the result expires before the visa application.
