Applying to UK Universities for 2027: A Step-by-Step Plan for International Students

Getting into a UK university involves three separate processes: academic admission, proof of English and the Student visa. For undergraduate study you submit one UCAS application with up to five courses — by 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and medicine, and by 13 January 2027 for most other courses. Foundation programmes and master's degrees are usually applied for directly. If you finished an 11-year school system (Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and similar), you will almost always need a bridging stage first, so define your route before collecting documents.

The 2027 admissions calendar

All times are UK time. On 15 October the UK is on summer time and on 13 January on winter time, so convert carefully and set your own deadline a day earlier.

Step 1. Shortlist five courses that accept your qualification

Start with the university's country page, not the league table. It tells you whether your certificate leads to a foundation programme, to year one after a year of university at home, or is not accepted. Bristol, for example, considers Russian applicants who have completed the first year of a Russian degree with a GPA of at least 3.8 in a relevant subject, while Manchester asks for at least two years.

UCAS rules that shape your list:

• up to five courses, at one or several universities;
• no more than four choices in medicine, dentistry or veterinary science;
• you cannot apply to both Oxford and Cambridge in the same cycle (except a narrow graduate-medicine case);
• one personal statement goes to all five courses, so keep the subjects closely related.

A balanced list has two or three courses where you comfortably meet the requirements and one or two ambitious choices.

Step 2. Plan your English test before anything else

The university and the visa have different requirements. At degree level the visa minimum is B2, and your university sponsor can accept IELTS Academic, TOEFL or another test it trusts. Most universities ask for IELTS 6.0–6.5; Oxford and Cambridge ask for 7.5.

Courses below degree level, such as a standalone foundation, need a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at B1: IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert Academic SELT, Skills for English UKVI or Trinity's SELT. Kent and Bristol state this explicitly for their foundation programmes.

For applicants from Russia there is a practical hurdle: the Home Office list of approved SELT centres dated 18 September 2026 has no centres in Russia. The nearest are in Almaty and Astana (including IDP IELTS, LanguageCert and Pearson centres), Tashkent, Bishkek, Yerevan and Tbilisi. Many universities also reject IELTS results older than two years at the course start date.

Step 3. Gather your documents

• passport — your application details must match it exactly;
• school certificate, or current grades with predicted grades if you are still at school;
• for the university-at-home route, an academic transcript;
• English translations where required; certification rules vary by university;
• English test result or the date you will take it;
• an academic reference from a teacher, not a relative or friend;
• personal statement;
• portfolio, written work or audition recordings where required.

Independent applicants can ask their school, college or a UCAS-registered centre to provide the reference. Arrange it in August–September: UCAS will not let you submit without it.

Step 4. Complete and submit your UCAS application

1. Register in the UCAS Hub; if a school or centre supports you, add its buzzword so it can attach your reference.
2. Complete personal details, education (with grades or predictions), employment and course choices.
3. Write the personal statement: since 2026 entry it has three questions — why this subject, how your studies prepared you, and what you have done outside education. The total limit is 4,000 characters including spaces, with at least 350 per answer.
4. Once the reference is added, pay the 2027 fee of $46 (£34.50) for up to five choices and submit.

An unconditional offer means the place is yours; a conditional offer depends on meeting conditions such as final grades or an IELTS score. Once all decisions are in, choose a firm offer and, if you like, an insurance offer with lower conditions, and decline the rest. Reply deadlines depend on your last decision: by 31 March 2027 → reply by 5 May; by 12 May → by 2 June; by 14 July → by 21 July. Missing the deadline declines your offers automatically.

If you have no offers after five choices, UCAS Extra lets you add courses one at a time from 25 February to 1 July 2027, and Clearing opens on 2 July. For international students Clearing is risky: there is little time left for the CAS and visa.

Step 7. From offer to CAS

The CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) is the reference number your university issues for the visa once your offer is unconditional: you have accepted it as firm, met the conditions, supplied the documents and, if required, paid a deposit. Read the deposit refund policy — especially for visa refusal — before paying. The CAS shows your fees, any amount already paid and how your English was assessed. You must apply for the visa within six months of receiving it.

Step 8. Visa and preparing to move

• Timing: apply no earlier than six months before the course starts; decisions from outside the UK usually take three weeks.
• Fees: visa $738 (£558), Immigration Health Surcharge $1,026 (£776) per year of visa, paid upfront.
• Funds: first-year fees (minus amounts paid) plus $2,021 (£1,529) per month in London or $1,548 (£1,171) elsewhere, for up to nine months, held for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of applying.
• TB test: required for residents of Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and several other countries, at a Home Office-approved clinic.
• Differential evidence: nationals of Kazakhstan usually need not submit financial evidence upfront, though UKVI may request it; this does not apply to Russian or Uzbek nationals.
• Payments: if direct transfers from your home bank to a UK university are not possible, set up a lawful payment route in advance.

If you are applying for a master's

Master's applications go directly through university portals. There is no single deadline; many courses accept applications from autumn until places fill. Expect to provide your degree certificate or transcript, two references, a personal statement and an English test. UK universities convert foreign grades: Glasgow, for instance, expects a Russian bachelor's or Specialist diploma graded "good" with a 4/5 GPA for courses requiring a UK 2:1.

What the application process costs

Conversions use the ECB reference rate of 24 September 2026 (£1 = $1.322).

Common mistakes

• Applying through UCAS with a certificate the course does not accept — you lose one of your five choices.
• Leaving the SELT until spring — without it there is no CAS for a foundation programme.
• One vague personal statement for unrelated subjects — it weakens every application.
• Declining an insurance offer — it is your only safety net if results fall short.
• Ignoring deposit terms — refunds after a visa refusal are not universal.
• Counting on Clearing — it is a last resort, not a strategy, for international students.
