Webster Vienna Private University (WVPU) is a private university in Palais Wenkheim in Vienna's 2nd district and part of the global network of Webster University, based in St. Louis, Missouri. AQ Austria has accredited it as an Austrian private university since 2001, while Webster University's US accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) covers every Webster campus. As a result, a bachelor's graduate can hold two degrees: an Austrian one from WVPU and an American one from Webster University. Russian and Kazakh school-leaving certificates appear on WVPU's published list of accepted qualifications, so there is no compulsory foundation year. Undergraduate tuition for 2026/27 is $27,190 (€24,068) a year.

Who Webster Vienna suits
| Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|
| An Austrian and an American degree from one programme | Higher fees than Modul University Vienna and far above public universities |
| Direct first-year entry, no separate foundation year | The bachelor's takes four years rather than three |
| International relations taught in a city that hosts the OSCE, the IAEA and a UN office | No university-owned halls, and Vienna rents are rising |
| A city-centre campus and a US-style curriculum with electives | Few scholarships: up to 20 new students a year, all need-based |
| An intensive English programme for applicants short of the score | Early non-EU deadlines, about six months before classes start |
Webster Vienna fits students who want international relations, psychology, communication or business in English and may later aim for graduate school or work in the United States or Europe. If tourism, hospitality or data science matter more and the budget is tighter, compare it with Modul University Vienna. Public English-taught options are covered in English-taught degrees in Austria, the capital's universities in universities in Vienna, and everything else on our Austria study hub.
How the two degrees work
WVPU is an Austrian university in its own right inside the Webster network, not a sales office, so it runs two parallel sets of degree rules.
- Austrian WVPU degree. Each programme is accredited by AQ Austria under the Private Universities Act. The BS in Business Administration, for example, carries 240 ECTS, of which at least 120 ECTS, including the thesis and the specialisation courses, must be earned at WVPU itself.
- US Webster University degree. Webster University in St. Louis confers it under its own catalogue: 120 US credit hours, roughly half in the major and 30 in the Global Citizenship Program. The two sets of requirements overlap heavily but not completely, so agree a course plan with your academic adviser in the first semester.
Transfer students should note that transferred credits count towards the US degree, while the Austrian diploma accepts only a limited number. If the Austrian degree matters to you, plan to complete most of the programme in Vienna.
Recognition outside Austria depends on the country where you use the degree and is decided by that country's competent authority. Decide early which of the two degrees your next step needs, and check how that degree is recognised in the country concerned.
Programmes
Bachelor's (four years, eight semesters): - BA International Relations, the university's flagship, with an optional Diplomacy and International Organizations certificate - BA Strategic Communication - BS Business Administration with emphases in Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, International Business or Marketing - BS Computer Science with an emphasis in Artificial Intelligence - BS Psychology - LLB Comparative International Business Law, run by a Department of Law created in 2026
Master's (two years): the graduate pages list the MA in International Relations and Security Studies and the MBA, for which two years of relevant work experience are preferred. The fee table also prices an MA in Marketing and an MA in Psychology; confirm that an intake is open in your year before applying.
Admission after secondary school
WVPU publishes a non-exhaustive list of national certificates that qualify for its bachelor's programmes. It includes the Russian attestat of complete general secondary education and the Kazakh attestat, so the university does not require a preparatory year; the decision rests on grades, English and the essay.
What the application needs: - the online application form - a copy of the passport photo page - transcripts for the last three school years and the diploma if already issued (final-year students can be admitted provisionally on current grades) - certified English translations of all school documents - an English test result - one recommendation letter from a teacher or counsellor on school letterhead - an original essay of 300–500 words on one of six set topics
The minimum GPA is 2.5 on the US 4.0 scale; the admissions office converts national grades. SAT scores are optional but can strengthen a file. The Admission Committee, led by the Head of Admissions, makes the decision and may ask for an interview online or by phone with the department head. Applicants under 18 need a legal guardian's approval. For a general overview, see bachelor's degrees in Austria.
English requirements
| Test | Bachelor's | Master's |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 | 6.5 (6.0 may be accepted after a positive faculty interview) |
| TOEFL iBT | 4.5 on the new scale (80 on the old) | 80 with writing 22 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | grade A, B or C, or 169 | — |
| PTE Academic | 53 | 53 |
| Duolingo English Test | 110, plus a strong essay and an interview with WVPU's Language Center | — |
Master's applicants also need a satisfactory interview with the head of the programme's department.
Applicants below the threshold can join Intensive English for the Global Scholar: 20 hours a week on campus for $7,340 (€6,500) a semester or $14,690 (€13,000) a year. Scholarships do not apply to it, and a language course on its own does not qualify for the Residence Permit – Student, so agree with the university how your status would be handled before paying.

Four years of undergraduate study at 2026/27 rates add up to about $108,770 (€96,272), and WVPU reviews its rates every year. The master's totals are estimates that exclude yearly inflation and cost-of-living adjustments.
Non-EU students pay the €1,000 deposit before WVPU issues the German-language acceptance letter for the immigration authorities. It is refunded only in exceptional, documented cases: a visa refusal not caused by incomplete or incorrect documents, or serious illness, with the request filed by 31 July for autumn entry or 31 December for spring. Tuition can be paid upfront or through a 50/50 or 40/20/20/20 instalment plan carrying a $110–140 (€100–120) fee. Payments go by bank transfer or Flywire; if you are paying from Russia, our guide on how to pay for studies abroad from Russia lists lawful options. Wider comparisons are in the cost of studying in Austria.
Scholarships
Up to 20 new students a year receive WVPU New Student Scholarships. Only applicants already admitted to a full degree programme can apply, and documented financial need is required at every level.
| Level | Bachelor's, per year | Master's, per year | Criteria |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | $13,560 (€12,000) | $9,040 (€8,000) | GPA 3.5+, C1 English, significant financial need |
| Middle | $7,910 (€7,000) | $5,650 (€5,000) | GPA 3.0+, B2 English, significant need |
| Base | $4,520 (€4,000) | $3,390 (€3,000) | GPA 3.0+, B2, financial need, good essay and references |
Awards are partial, and the student pays the remaining tuition. They renew for the length of the programme if you stay full-time with a GPA of 3.0 or above. The Legacy Grant cuts tuition by 10% if a parent or sibling studies or studied in the Webster network, and by 5% for more distant relatives. The university decides every award; other options are in scholarships in Austria.
Housing and budget
WVPU has no halls of its own. It lists housing providers and discount codes, but you book and pay directly, and the tenancy agreement goes into your permit application.
| Provider | Monthly price quoted by WVPU | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| The Social Hub | $1,020–1,530 (€904–1,356) | 10 minutes by public transport; 5% off with the university's code |
| Milestone | $1,110–1,220 (€979–1,079) | apartments with private bathroom and kitchenette |
| STUWO | $670–720 (€592–634) | place in a shared two-room flat, all inclusive |
| The Fizz | $960–1,020 (€850–900) | studio on a full-year booking, 5% off for first-year students |
Example year for a student under 24: $27,190 (€24,068) in tuition plus the amount required for the permit. With rent of $680 (€600) a month the account must show $12,690 (€11,233.80): the base $820 (€722.58) a month plus the difference between your rent and the $440 (€386.43) allowance. The total is about $39,880 before flights and personal costs.
Residence permit
Studies longer than six months require the Residence Permit – Student. First applications are filed in person at the Austrian embassy for your country of residence (Moscow for Russian citizens living in Russia, Astana for Kazakhstan) and forwarded to the Vienna immigration office MA 35, which decides. The usual processing time is 90 days from a complete file; the fee is $250 (€218) and is not refunded after a refusal.
WVPU states plainly that it cannot give legal advice, apply on a student's behalf or influence the outcome. It issues the German-language acceptance letter after the deposit; you assemble the rest: passport, birth certificate and police certificate with apostille, a tenancy agreement, comprehensive health insurance, and bank statements for 12 months with proof of where the money comes from. Step-by-step guidance is in the Austrian student visa and residence permit and studying in Austria as a Russian citizen.
You may work up to 20 hours a week with an employment permit obtained by the employer, and after graduation the permit can be extended by 12 months to look for work. See working while studying in Austria.
Do not confuse
- Webster Vienna and Webster University in St. Louis. One brand, but separate legal entities and price lists; in Vienna you pay the Vienna rate in euros.
- Webster Vienna and the University of Vienna (Universität Wien). The latter is Austria's largest public university, charging non-EU students about $820 (€726.72) a semester and teaching mostly in German; see our University of Vienna profile.
- Webster Vienna and Modul University Vienna. Both are private and English-taught, but Modul awards only Austrian degrees and focuses on tourism, management and data.
Common mistakes
- Applying in May for an autumn start. The non-EU deadline is 31 March, which already leaves little time for the permit.
- Counting on a scholarship without financial need. Every New Student Scholarship level requires documented need.
- Assuming the deposit comes back after any refusal. A refusal linked to incomplete or incorrect documents means the €1,000 is kept.
- Not planning courses for both degrees. The Austrian and US requirements differ slightly.
- Booking housing after the embassy appointment. The lease is needed on the day you file.
FAQ
Can I enter Webster Vienna directly after an 11-year school certificate?
Yes. The Russian and Kazakh attestats are on WVPU's list of qualifications accepted for bachelor's entry. You need a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, an essay and a recommendation; the WVPU Admission Committee makes the decision.
How much does Webster Vienna Private University cost?
In 2026/27 full-time bachelor's tuition is €24,068 ($27,190) a year. The MBA and the MA in International Relations cost about €31,680 for the whole programme, the MA in Psychology about €42,240. Housing and living costs come on top.
Does Webster Vienna award an Austrian or an American degree?
Students can earn both: the Austrian WVPU degree accredited by AQ Austria and the US degree of Webster University, which is accredited by the HLC. For the Austrian degree at least half of the credits must be completed in Vienna.
Are there scholarships for international students at Webster Vienna?
Yes. WVPU New Student Scholarships are worth up to €12,000 a year for bachelor's and €8,000 for master's students and go to up to 20 new students a year. You apply after admission and must show financial need; the university decides.
Is Webster University on Russia's list of undesirable organisations?
As of the list's late-September 2026 state, neither Webster University nor Webster Vienna Private University appears on it. The list changes, so Russian citizens should check the Ministry of Justice register again before paying.
Where do Russian citizens apply for the permit to study in Vienna?
If you live in Russia, you file in person at the Austrian embassy in Moscow. The Vienna immigration office MA 35 decides; the university only provides the German-language acceptance letter and plays no part in the decision.
