A bachelor's degree in the UAE takes three years at British and French branch campuses and four years at universities following the US model, and it is taught almost entirely in English. At a branch campus the home university awards the degree; at a local university it is awarded by the UAE institution under a ministry licence. At 2026/27 prices, a whole degree without housing costs from $52,740 (AED 193,671) for three years at Middlesex University Dubai to $120,760 (AED 443,504) for four years at American University of Sharjah. If your university does not accept an 11-year school certificate for Year 1, add a foundation year to the time and budget.

Three bachelor's models in the UAE
The model decides the length, how much you can choose, and what a study year looks like.
| Model | Length and load | Where | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| British | 3 years, 120 credits a year | Middlesex, Heriot-Watt, University of Birmingham Dubai | specialised from Year 1, modules and exams each semester, a foundation year if your certificate is not enough |
| US | 4 years, 120–132 credit hours | American University of Sharjah, American University in Dubai, Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, Abu Dhabi University | general education courses in the first years, major chosen or confirmed later, fees per credit or per semester |
| French | 3 years | Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi | Sorbonne programmes, a price fixed for the whole degree |
The British model is shorter and cheaper overall, but you need to know your field from the start. The US model gives you time to explore: general education courses fill the first semesters, and you confirm your major later. If you are still choosing a field, that matters. The Sorbonne model needs French at B2 (DELF, TEF, TCF or its own SELFEE test) for most programmes; physics, mathematics with a data science concentration and records management are taught in English.
Where to find each subject
Fields below come from the universities' official 2026/27 fee schedules and entry requirements.
| Field | Bachelor's programmes at |

| Engineering | Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University (132 credits), American University of Sharjah, Heriot-Watt Dubai, Abu Dhabi University |
| Computer science, data, AI | Khalifa University (applied mathematics, statistics and data science), American University of Sharjah, Heriot-Watt Dubai, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (mathematics with data science for AI) |
| Business, finance, economics | United Arab Emirates University, Abu Dhabi University, American University of Sharjah, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (economics and management, in French) |
| Architecture and design | American University of Sharjah, American University in Dubai, Heriot-Watt Dubai (design) |
| Psychology | Heriot-Watt Dubai, Abu Dhabi University |
| Media, film, game design | Abu Dhabi University (digital media, film production, video game design), American University of Sharjah |
| International relations, law, humanities | Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (history with international relations, law, philosophy and sociology), Abu Dhabi University |
| Health sciences, nutrition, veterinary medicine | United Arab Emirates University, Abu Dhabi University |
Medicine is outside the scope of this guide: it has its own requirements and length.
What a study year looks like
Most universities run autumn and spring semesters; summer sessions are optional and charged separately. At American University in Dubai, summer costs $1,250 (AED 4,599) per credit plus $160 (AED 600) per session.
In the US model, a full load is 12–16 credits a semester, and extra credits are billed individually. At British campuses the load is fixed at 120 credits a year, and additional modules need the programme coordinator's approval and an extra fee.
If your English is not yet enough for direct entry, some universities run an in-house English stage. At American University of Sharjah this is the English Bridge Program at $9,810 (AED 36,012) per semester.
Admission in brief
Requirements depend on the university: some take 11-year school leavers straight into Year 1, others via a foundation year. English (usually IELTS 6.0–6.5) and Ministry of Education equivalency of your school certificate are always required. Documents, legalisation and a timeline are covered in our guide to applying to UAE universities.
What the whole degree costs
Annual fees are easy to compare, but decisions are made on the total. Below is a StudyU calculation at 2026/27 prices, without future increases, housing or the visa.
| Option | Length | Tuition for the whole degree |
|---|---|---|
| Middlesex University Dubai | 3 years | $52,740 (AED 193,671) |
| Middlesex University Dubai with foundation year | 4 years | $66,430 (AED 243,972) |
| Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi | 3 years | $58,570 (AED 215,100) |
| United Arab Emirates University, 120 credits | 4 years | $86,950 (AED 319,320) |
| Khalifa University | 4 years | about $88,500 (AED 325,000), university estimate |
| United Arab Emirates University, engineering, 132 credits | 4 years | $95,640 (AED 351,252) |
| American University in Dubai | 4 years | $117,690 (AED 432,200) including services fee |
| American University of Sharjah | 4 years | $120,760 (AED 443,504) before lab fees |
Fees for new intakes change every year, so ask whether your rate is fixed. Middlesex keeps it for continuing students, University of Birmingham Dubai does not raise it after Year 1, and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi fixes the price for the whole programme. The annual budget with housing and visa is in our guide to the cost of studying in the UAE.
Scholarships: keeping them for every year
Winning a first-year scholarship is half the task; the other half is keeping it until graduation.
- Khalifa University requires scholarship holders to maintain strong academic standing; renewal conditions depend on the programme.
- The President's Scholarship at American University of Sharjah is renewable while you meet its requirements. AUS merit scholarships may be affected if you change major after the offer.
- NYU Abu Dhabi typically renews the aid awarded at admission at the same level and does not re-evaluate it each year.

Internships and work during your bachelor's
Internships are part of many programmes, and since September 2026 the state has been checking them more closely. Cabinet Resolution No. 143 of 2026 names fictitious practical training, where a student is registered for training that does not actually happen, as a violation. A university can be ordered to refund the student, pay for repeated training and lose the right to admit students.
Part-time work is only allowed with a MOHRE permit requested by the employer, plus a university no-objection letter for training. Universities add their own limits: American University of Sharjah does not allow employment on its student visa, only internships in your field. Residence rules are explained in our guide to the UAE student visa.
What a UAE bachelor's leads to
- Further study in the UAE. Khalifa University's master's programmes require a GPA of at least 3.0 out of 4.0. Graduates of Dubai free-zone campuses attest their degrees through KHDA, and ministry recognition opens access to accredited UAE universities. See our guide to master's degrees in the UAE.
- Golden Visa. Graduates of UAE universities in class A or B of the ministry's classification can apply with a GPA of at least 3.5 or 3.8 respectively, within two years of graduation. A similar visa for school leavers with 95% applies only to UAE schools.
- Recognition outside the UAE. A degree from a British or US branch campus is the home university's degree, but recognition follows your home country's rules. In Russia, for example, Rosobrnadzor handles recognition through the National Information Centre (application via Gosuslugi or nic.gov.ru, state duty RUB 6,500); no procedure is needed if a treaty applies or the institution is on the government list approved by Order No. 186-r of 30 January 2023. A degree earned at a UAE campus may be assessed differently from one earned at the home campus, so ask the recognition body before you enrol.
Who a UAE bachelor's suits
It suits you if you want a British or US degree closer to home than the UK or USA, you are ready to study in English, and your family has budgeted for three to four years in full.
Compare alternatives if your budget is under $20,000 a year including housing, if you need tuition-free study, or if staying in the country after graduation without an employer is important. For a broader view of the destination, read about studying in Dubai and our UAE country page.
Common mistakes
- Comparing annual fees of UK and US models. Compare the total: three years versus four.
- Not checking programme accreditation. An institutional licence does not mean every programme is accredited.
- Choosing the US model for breadth without counting credits. Engineering needs more credits and costs more.
- Assuming the scholarship lasts four years. Renewal depends on your results and the university's rules.
How StudyU helps
Programme shortlisting for your subjects and budget, total-degree costing, programme status checks and applications are provided under an agreement with StudyU. Admission and scholarship decisions are made by the university, programme accreditation by the CAA, and student residence by the emirate's immigration authority. University profiles are collected in our guide to universities in the UAE.
