UAE Student Visa: How Universities Sponsor Residence, Timelines and Fees

A UAE student visa is a residence permit sponsored by your university, not a visa you collect from a consulate. After you are admitted and have paid, the university applies to the emirate's immigration authority; you enter on an electronic permit, complete a medical test and biometrics for your Emirates ID, and receive residence. It is usually issued for one year and renewed annually; American University of Sharjah gives new students a two-year visa. Dubai's government fees for a student residence permit processed inside the country total $200 (AED 740), but universities bill a package: at American University in Dubai it is $2,230 (AED 8,200) in the first year, including insurance and a refundable deposit. Visa-free entry, which Russian citizens have, does not cover study.

Who can sponsor a student

The UAE government recognises two bases for study residence. The first is sponsorship by the accredited university or college you attend, which acts as your host and sponsor. The second is sponsorship by a parent with UAE residence. A parent can sponsor a son up to age 25, or older if he is at university, and a daughter of any age until she marries. That application needs a university letter stating the length of study.

Families of international students may live in the UAE if they can afford suitable housing. A student on a university visa, however, cannot sponsor residence for parents: RIT Dubai notes that parents or a spouse can only get a 14–40-day tourist visa if immigration approves it, and American University of Sharjah does not let students sponsor family members either.

The Golden Visa, a 5- or 10-year residence without a sponsor, is a separate category for outstanding school and university graduates; details are below.

Step by step: how residence is issued

  1. Admission and payment. The visa process starts after the offer and a deposit or first payment. Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi confirms seats and visa processing only after payment is received.
  2. University forms. You complete the university's visa form and send documents to its visa office. RIT Dubai asks for everything, including flight tickets, at least 5 working days before arrival.
  3. Entry permit. The university applies to GDRFA Dubai or to the ICP directorate in its emirate. American University of Sharjah obtains an online permit through the residency directorate in Sharjah and emails you a copy. The permit is single-entry and valid for 60 days from issue; the authorities take one to eight weeks to issue it, so AUS asks for the visa request at least two months before arrival.
  4. Arrival and medical test. Everyone aged 18 or over needs a medical fitness test at an approved centre. At RIT Dubai it is done within a week of handing your passport to the visa office.
  5. Insurance, biometrics and Emirates ID. Residence is not stamped without insurance. You then receive your Emirates ID, which expires with the visa.

GDRFA's service card gives 48 hours for its decision, but universities plan for longer: RIT Dubai allows up to 15 working days for a new visa and 3–4 weeks for a renewal.

Documents for student residence

GDRFA Dubai's service card lists:

  • a recent colour photograph on a white background;
  • a passport copy;
  • a medical examination from an approved centre;
  • an Emirates ID application receipt;
  • health insurance.

Universities add their own: the offer letter, proof of payment, their visa form, your current UAE visa if you are already in the country, and flight tickets if you are arriving from abroad. On the government side, the institution must be licensed and approved by the ministry or the competent emirate authority.

The government permit fee rises by $27 (AED 100) a year once residence exceeds two years. For how these costs fit into an annual budget, see our guide to the cost of studying in the UAE.

Russian citizens: entry and switching to student status

Under an intergovernmental agreement in force since 17 February 2019, Russian and UAE citizens can stay in the other country without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The exemption applies only to people who do not intend to work, study or reside there. It works for an open day or an admission test; for study you need university-sponsored residence.

If you are already in the UAE as a tourist, the route depends on your entry status. RIT Dubai, citing Dubai immigration rules, explains that you can apply while on tourist status but must then leave the country and re-enter on the student permit; holders of a visit visa can switch without leaving. A status change is charged separately, and American University of Sharjah warns that entering visa-free does not mean a student visa or change of status will be approved. It is simpler to enter on the permit your university arranges.

Medical test, Emirates ID and insurance

Medical test. It is compulsory for residence from age 18 and is repeated at renewal: RIT Dubai requires it from new and renewing students alike.

Emirates ID. The federal ICP issues the ID card together with the visa, and it is valid for the same period.

Insurance. The policy must be valid in the UAE. RIT Dubai, for example, accepts a private policy only if it meets Dubai Health Authority requirements, or offers cover through its partner provider. NYU Abu Dhabi states that insurance originating in the UAE is a condition of the entry visa.

Renewing and keeping your status

  • When to apply. RIT Dubai asks for renewal documents one month before expiry: the fee receipt, valid insurance and proof of enrolment.
  • Condition for renewal. The university renews your visa while you remain its student and meet the visa office's requirements: documents, medical test and insurance.
  • Time abroad. Residence is cancelled automatically after more than 180 consecutive days outside the UAE. Exceptions exist for residents enrolled in educational institutions abroad, but they follow each emirate's rules, so agree any long absence, such as an exchange semester, with your university's visa office in advance.
  • After expiry. GDRFA's service card allows 60 days in the country after a student permit expires or is cancelled.
  • Cancellation. When you finish or leave your programme, the visa must be cancelled before you depart. RIT Dubai allows about 5 working days and warns of fines and entry bans for non-compliance.

Working while you study

The student visa itself gives no right to work. Part-time work or training needs a separate Student Training and Employment Permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). The employer applies; you need valid residence, proof of student status and a medical fitness certificate, plus a no-objection letter from your university for training. Students aged 15–18 need a guardian's written consent. The federal fee is $14 (AED 50), and the service card gives the permit a validity of three months.

Universities add their own rules. RIT Dubai, for example, does not allow students on its visa to work off campus except part-time with a no-objection letter. American University of Sharjah is stricter: no full- or part-time employment on its student visa, only internships in your field with a no-objection certificate and university approval. Do not build earnings into your essential budget.

After graduation

  • Work visa. The main route is an employer who sponsors your visa.
  • Job seeker visa. It is issued without a sponsor for 60, 90 or 120 days. Eligibility includes a bachelor's degree or higher from one of the world's top 500 universities obtained within the last two years, according to ICP and GDRFA.
  • Graduate Golden Visa. For graduates of UAE universities: an institution in class A or B of the ministry's classification, a GPA of at least 3.5 or 3.8 respectively, graduation within two years and a ministry-attested degree. Graduates of universities abroad need a bachelor's from a top-100 university on the ministry's list, a GPA of 3.5, graduation within two years and a ministry equivalency certificate. It is a separate application decided by ICP or GDRFA.

Common mistakes

  • Flying in visa-free and waiting for the student visa. On tourist status you will have to leave and re-enter.
  • Buying insurance the university will not accept. It must be a UAE policy meeting the emirate's rules.
  • Missing the renewal date. Overstays lead to fines, and universities do not always send reminders.
  • Leaving without cancelling the visa. This can lead to an entry ban for the UAE and other Gulf countries.
  • Working without a MOHRE permit. It is not allowed even for a few hours a week.

How StudyU helps

Preparing your documents for the university visa office, planning the medical test, insurance and renewals, and checking your university's and programme's status are provided under an agreement with StudyU. Student residence is decided by GDRFA Dubai or ICP, with your university as sponsor. For admission, see our guide to applying to UAE universities; for a country overview, see studying in the UAE.

FAQ

Not to enter: visa-free stays of up to 90 days are allowed. To study, you need a student residence permit, which the university arranges after admission and payment. There is no need to visit a consulate.

Usually one year; American University of Sharjah gives new students two years. It is renewed every year while you study, each time with a medical test, valid insurance and proof of enrolment. RIT Dubai allows 3–4 weeks for renewal and charges $450 (AED 1,670).

Dubai's government fees for in-country processing are $200 (AED 740). Universities charge a package: at American University in Dubai it is a $540 (AED 2,000) visa fee, $870 (AED 3,200) insurance and a refundable $820 (AED 3,000) passport deposit.

Only with a MOHRE permit applied for by the employer and with your university's consent. You need valid residence, proof of student status and a medical certificate. University rules can be stricter: RIT Dubai allows only part-time work with its letter, and American University of Sharjah allows only internships in your field.

A student on a university visa cannot sponsor residence for parents; they can visit on a visit visa. The reverse works: a parent with UAE residence can sponsor a student child, a son up to 25 or older while at university, and a daughter until she marries.

Not automatically. After a student permit is cancelled, GDRFA allows 60 days. Beyond that you need an employer-sponsored work visa, a job seeker visa of up to 120 days, or a Golden Visa if you meet the university and GPA conditions.
