TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology)

TU Wien is Austria's largest public technical university: engineering, architecture, informatics, mathematics, physics and chemistry, taught on sites around Karlsplatz in central Vienna. Degrees are Austrian state degrees, and tuition for non-EU students is set by law rather than by the university's marketing.

The real filter is not money but language and paperwork. Bachelor's programmes are taught in German, the application still goes by post, and a foreign school certificate is checked line by line against the Austrian Matura.

• Next realistic start for a non-EU bachelor applicant: winter semester 2027/28, with the postal application recommended between 16 January and 15 July 2027.
• Good fit: strong maths and physics students ready to reach German C1, or bachelor's graduates heading for one of the English-taught master's.
• Weak fit: applicants who want an English bachelor's, a campus with ready-made dorms, or close hand-holding from staff.

TU Wien is a public university under the Austrian Universities Act, so its bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees carry full academic recognition in the EU. In the QS World University Rankings 2027 it placed 191st, second in Austria after the University of Vienna.

For engineering careers the subject and the lab group matter more than the overall rank; architecture, civil engineering and informatics each run their own admission rules, described below.

There is no closed campus. The Admission Office sits at Karlsplatz 13, and the faculties occupy buildings spread across central Vienna, so expect to move between sites by U-Bahn or tram during the week.

Timetables are self-organised: you register for courses and exams yourself, and nobody chases you if a semester slips. Students used to a fixed class schedule should plan that adjustment.

TU Wien lists 19 English-taught, 13 German-taught and 8 interuniversity master's programmes. At bachelor's level the teaching language is German.

Bachelor's courses in Informatics, Architecture and Spatial Planning have capped places and an entrance exam; the other bachelor's programmes use a self-orientation step called the Programme-PRe-Phase, which must be completed during pre-registration.

Everything starts with a signed paper application sent to the Admission Office; electronically submitted files are not considered. Processing takes 10–12 weeks, and the office does not answer status questions before that time has passed.

1. January–July 2027: post the bachelor's application with legalised, translated school documents and proof of German at A2. TU Wien recommends that non-EU applicants send complete files from 16 January to 15 July for the winter semester.
2. By 5 September 2027: finish pre-registration, including the entrance exam or the Programme-PRe-Phase; without it no admission is possible.
3. With the admission letter: apply for the Austrian student residence permit at the embassy or consulate.
4. By 31 October: enrol in person or online (for exam-based programmes) and pay the semester fee.

If the Admission Office finds your school certificate not fully equivalent, the letter prescribes supplementary exams in mathematics, physics or chemistry, and German if C1 is missing. These are taken at the Vienna universities' preparation programme (VWU), whose registration closes on 13 August for the winter semester.

Typical mistakes

• Sending the file by express courier from outside the EU: the office warns such parcels may be refused because of customs charges.
• Translating documents before legalisation, so the stamps themselves remain untranslated.
• Assuming 11 years of school is fine: at least 12 years and six general subjects are expected, otherwise supplementary exams follow.
• Choosing Mechanical or Civil Engineering without four hours a week of descriptive geometry at school, which then has to be made up during the degree.

For bachelor's study you need German A2 when applying and C1 before regular admission; if C1 is missing, the university prescribes the German supplementary exam. English-taught master's programmes ask for English at B2 and no German.

Each person may file at most two admission applications, so choose the two programmes deliberately.

Non-EU students pay the tuition fee from the first semester: $825 (€726.72) plus the Students' Union (ÖH) fee of $30 (€26.20) from winter semester 2026/27, so $855 (€752.92) per semester or about $1,710 (€1,505.84) a year. Citizens of listed least-developed countries pay only the ÖH fee.

A student under 24 therefore has to evidence about $9,846 (€8,671) for the year before counting any rent above the threshold or health insurance. TU Wien does not run a general tuition scholarship for international bachelor's students; funding comes from your own means, family or external programmes.

TU Wien has no dorms of its own. Rooms come from Vienna's student housing operators or the private market, and the embassy wants a rental or hall contract for at least three months with the permit file.

OeAD advises submitting the first residence permit application about six months before arrival; the decision period is 90 days and can be extended by another 90 if papers are missing. The authority decides; TU Wien's Admission Office explicitly gives no visa advice, and newly admitted students are referred to its International Welcome and Engagement Center.

It rewards independent, mathematically strong students: exams are demanding, progress is your responsibility, and the price is low enough to justify an extra semester of German or the VWU. It suits bachelor's graduates who want a European technical master's in English for under $2,000 a year in fees.

It is a poor match if you need English from the first semester, want small-group tutoring, or cannot start the paperwork a year ahead. Graduates go into engineering firms, software, construction, energy and research; the right to stay and work in Austria after the degree is set by Austrian residence law, not by the university.
