Queensland University of Technology (QUT): Admission, 2027 Fees and Student Visa

📍 Australia

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is a public university in Brisbane with two inner-city campuses, Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove. It ranks 240th in the QS World University Rankings 2027. The key point for Russian applicants: Russian citizens applying from outside Australia for a student visa can apply to QUT only through an official QUT representative. Fees for 2027 are published course by course: bachelor's degrees in business and IT cost about $32,500 (A$46,700–46,800) a year, engineering $34,890 (A$50,200).

Who QUT suits

Pros Cons
Applied focus: business, IT, engineering, design, health sciences Russian citizens cannot apply on their own through the portal; a representative is required
Both campuses are in Brisbane, close to employers and transport Brisbane is not a regional area, so QUT study gives no second 485 visa
2027 fees for every course are published in one table Fees are annual and reviewed every year
An in-house QUT College with a foundation year and first-year diplomas Student apartment complexes start at $290 (A$419) a week
Applications are accepted year-round, and business also has a November intake Nursing and teaching need IELTS 7.0–7.5

QUT is a good fit for applicants who want a large city and applied study with a clear link to employment. If a research-intensive Group of Eight university matters more, compare it with UQ; for other cities, see our overviews of universities in Australia and universities in Melbourne.

How Russian citizens apply

QUT's international applying page lists nations whose citizens, if they are outside Australia and seeking a student visa, must apply through an official QUT representative. The list covers several dozen countries in Africa and Asia and, in Europe, Russia and Ukraine. QUT notes that the list can change and points to the UN and Australian sanctions regimes. Kazakhstan and Belarus are not listed as at 1 October 2026, so their citizens can apply directly through the QUT Application Portal or through a representative.

QUT publishes its representatives by country, so before you hand your application to anyone, find that organisation on QUT's official list: an application from a Russian citizen abroad that does not come through a listed representative will not be processed. The admission decision always rests with the university: a representative submits documents and helps with the process but does not decide in place of QUT admissions. Students already enrolled at QUT on a student visa do not need a representative.

What to include with the application:

  • your school certificate or degree and academic transcript, translated into English;
  • your passport;
  • your English test result if you have it (taken no more than two years before your course starts);
  • if you want credit for subjects already studied, course descriptions showing hours and how each subject was assessed.

QUT also assesses the Genuine Student requirement: your immigration history, personal circumstances and how the course relates to your previous study and work. You can explain why you chose the course in the application itself.

Entry after Year 11: QUT College

QUT College is part of the university and teaches at Kelvin Grove. It takes applicants who do not yet meet the academic or English requirements for a bachelor's degree, and QUT may offer a package that combines the pathway with your chosen degree. QUT does not publish a threshold for the Russian school certificate; it assesses each application.

Program Length Start English Fee, 2027
Standard Foundation Program 12 months February, July IELTS 5.5 (no band below 5.0) $17,750 (A$25,536)
Intensive Program 6 months February, July IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.0) $8,870 (A$12,768)

QUT College diplomas are designed to replace the first year: the Diploma in Business, for example, leads straight into the second year of the Bachelor of Business. All diplomas start in February, July and November and require IELTS 5.5 with no band below 5.0 (6.0 with no band below 5.5 for the nursing version).

Diploma Annual fee, 2027
Business, Information Technology, Creative Industries $19,600 (A$28,200)
Health Science (Health Studies or Nursing) $25,510 (A$36,700)
Engineering $27,040 (A$38,900)
Architectural Studies $29,400 (A$42,300)

Most diplomas take 12 months with a February start and eight months with a July or November start; the Diploma in Health Science (Health Studies) runs for a year whatever the intake. Our guide to studying in Australia after Year 11 compares the foundation year with a year at a university at home.

If you will be under 18 when you start, the offer is conditional on the QUT Under 18 Supervision Program form. Without a parent or guardian in Australia, you must live in QUT-approved accommodation and pay a supervision fee of $100 (A$150) plus $6 (A$8.80) per night until you turn 18.

Bachelor's fees for 2027

QUT publishes annual fees for international students starting in 2027. A standard full-time load is 48 credit points per semester.

Bachelor of Biomedical Science 3 years Gardens Point February $39,270 (A$56,500)

Most programs require IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0. The Bachelor of Nursing requires 7.0 (7.0 in listening, reading and speaking, 6.5 in writing), and master's degrees in teaching require 7.5. For a first-year budget with housing and insurance, see the cost of studying in Australia.

Master's degrees

A coursework master's needs a bachelor's degree recognised by QUT, and Russian bachelor's or specialist degrees are assessed individually. Prior study can earn credit and shorten the program, which is why many QUT courses list a length of 1.5 to 2 years.

Program Length Year, 2027
Master of Public Health 2 years $29,470 (A$42,400)
Master of Data Science 2 years $32,320 (A$46,500)
Master of Information Technology 1.5–2 years $32,530 (A$46,800)
Master of Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security 2 years same rate as the Master of Information Technology
Master of Business 1.5–2 years $35,790 (A$51,500)
Master of Professional Engineering 1.5–2 years $35,520 (A$51,100)
Master of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence 1.5 years $36,280 (A$52,200)

For the 485 graduate visa, your study must last at least 92 weeks as registered on CRICOS. If credit has cut your program to 1.5 years, check whether that length is still enough. Home Affairs decides on the visa. Our master's in Australia guide explains the formats.

QUT scholarships

QUT considers every applicant for scholarships automatically through the course application, but almost all of its awards depend on the country of your previous education:

  • International Merit Scholarship: 25% of tuition each semester for the rest of the degree while you keep up your results. QUT publishes an academic threshold for each eligible country; as at 1 October 2026 neither Russia nor Kazakhstan appears in that table.
  • International Talent Scholarship: 20% of tuition per semester, also for selected countries and faculties only.
  • QUT College Merit Scholarship: a quarter of the first-semester fee for a foundation or diploma, for selected countries.
  • QUT College English Language Concession: 25% off the college's EAP and IELTS Advanced courses for applicants from selected countries.

With a Russian certificate, do not build a QUT discount into your budget in advance: if the university awards one, it will appear in your offer. QUT decides on scholarships. For other funding, see scholarships in Australia.

Housing and life in Brisbane

QUT's 2027 quick guide for international students gives these housing benchmarks:

Option Per week
Student apartment complex (own room, shared areas) $290–380 (A$419–550)
Residential college with meals $430–540 (A$620–770)
Renting a room about $210 (A$300)

Add food, transport and phone costs on top of rent. For the visa you must show $20,650 (A$29,710) for a year of living costs in any case.

Visa, QUT's allocation and work

The subclass 500 student visa is lodged online in ImmiAccount after you receive the CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment), and the Department of Home Affairs decides. Conditions as at 1 October 2026:

  • the charge starts at $1,740 (A$2,500);
  • living costs of $20,650 (A$29,710) a year plus the first 12 months of tuition and $1,390 (A$2,000) for travel, or parents' annual income of at least $61,060 (A$87,856);
  • Genuine Student answers in English, no more than 150 words per question;
  • biometrics on request in six Russian cities, including Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and in Almaty.

QUT's indicative allocation for 2026 is 4,750 new international students. In the Department of Education report with data as at 25 September 2026, QUT held Priority 1 status. Home Affairs aims to start processing such applications within 1–4 weeks of lodgement (Priority 2: 5–8 weeks; Priority 3: 9–12 weeks); these periods are based on 2025 lodgements and can change. The status does not affect the visa outcome. The National Planning Level for 2027 is 295,000 new international students, unchanged from 2026. Our Australian student visa guide covers each step.

During teaching periods you may work up to 48 hours a fortnight. After a bachelor's or coursework master's degree, a graduate aged 35 or under can apply for a two-year 485 visa. Brisbane is not a designated regional area, so studying at QUT does not lead to a second 485 visa. Home Affairs decides on the 485 visa; see our guide to working while studying and the 485 visa.

Application plan

  1. Ten to twelve months ahead. Take IELTS Academic at a test centre, translate your documents and choose a program and intake (February or July).
  2. Six to eight months ahead. Russian citizens find an official QUT representative; Kazakh citizens apply on the QUT portal or through a representative. Pay the A$100 fee.
  3. After the offer. Accept it and pay the fees stated in the offer; QUT then issues the CoE.
  4. Two to three months ahead. Arrange OSHC, lodge the subclass 500 application and find housing.
  5. Before the start. If you are under 18, complete the Under 18 Supervision Program.

Lawful payment routes from Russia are in how to pay for studies abroad from Russia; applicants from Kazakhstan can use studying abroad from Kazakhstan.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing QUT with UQ. They are separate Brisbane universities; an application to one is not considered by the other.
  • Applying from Russia on your own through the portal. For Russian citizens abroad, QUT accepts applications only through its representative.
  • Expecting a second 485 visa. Brisbane is not regional, so the bonus does not apply to QUT.
  • Taking an at-home online English test. Home Affairs does not accept tests delivered entirely online.
  • Not checking the length of a shortened master's. Credit saves money but can cost you eligibility for the 485 visa.

FAQ

Can I enter QUT after Year 11?

Yes, through QUT College: the Standard Foundation Program lasts 12 months, costs $17,750 (A$25,536) in 2027 and needs IELTS 5.5. No fixed grade for Russian certificates appears in QUT's materials, so each case is reviewed individually, and the university makes the admission decision.

Do I need an agent to apply to QUT from Russia?

Yes. If you hold Russian citizenship, live outside Australia and need a student visa, QUT accepts your application only via one of its official representatives. The rule does not apply to citizens of Kazakhstan or Belarus, and QUT makes the decision on every application.

How much does QUT cost in 2027?

Bachelor's degrees range from $28,360 (A$40,800) a year for mathematics to $39,270 (A$56,500) for biomedical science, with business and IT at about $32,500. Master's degrees cost $29,470–36,210 a year. Fees are reviewed annually.

How is QUT different from the University of Queensland?

Both are in Brisbane but they are different universities. QUT is an applied university of technology with inner-city campuses, while UQ is a research-intensive Group of Eight university based at St Lucia. Their fees, requirements and application routes differ.

Are there QUT scholarships for Russian students?

Do not count on a discount in advance. QUT offers the International Merit (25% for the whole degree) and Talent (20%) awards to applicants from selected countries, and Russia is not in the published Merit threshold table as at 1 October 2026. Every applicant is considered automatically, and QUT decides on scholarships.

How do the international student caps affect a QUT application?

As at 25 September 2026 QUT had Priority 1 status, with an allocation of 4,750 new students for 2026. Home Affairs aims to start processing such applications within 1–4 weeks, and the visa itself depends only on the department's decision.
