The program in brief

Compare structural analysis with materials, geotechnical subjects and construction practice. Check how calculation, design software and laboratory results are brought together in assessed projects.

Use the curriculum and university options below to build a shortlist. Confirm the exact degree level, teaching language, course sequence and practical requirements with each university; similar programme names do not make the courses interchangeable.

Study to Become a Civil Engineer in Turkey

Turkish universities teach civil engineering in English and Turkish. You need a high-school diploma and a language certificate; YÖS is not required everywhere. The degree usually takes 4 years; check professional recognition in the country where you plan to work. Under an agreement with StudyU, we select agreed university options within budget, prepare documents, and support scholarship applications. The university makes the final decision on admission, and the university or funding body decides scholarship awards.

Study plan

The degree takes four years. The list below shows a typical sequence from foundation courses to electives and a graduation project; course titles, order and credits differ by university, so compare it with the published curriculum of each programme you shortlist.

Year 1
  • Calculus and linear algebra
  • Physics
  • Engineering drawing and CAD
  • Programming for engineers
  • Statics
Years 2–3
  • Strength of materials
  • Structural analysis
  • Hydraulics
  • Surveying and soil mechanics
  • Summer site internship (staj)
Year 4
  • Reinforced concrete and steel structures
  • Earthquake-resistant design
  • Transport or water-resources electives
  • Construction management and cost estimating
  • Graduation design project

Where graduates work

Roles graduates commonly move into are listed below. Signing off designs as a chartered or licensed engineer requires registration in the country where you work.

Structural engineers in design offices calculate frames, slabs and foundations, including seismic checks.

Site engineers at contractors run daily work, quality control and safety on the construction site.

Geotechnical engineers test soil and design foundations, retaining walls and slopes.

Transport and water engineers work on roads, rail, drainage and water supply for consultancies and infrastructure operators.

BIM and planning engineers build coordinated models, schedules and cost estimates.

Laboratory and inspection engineers test concrete and other materials and check that work on site matches the approved design.

How to tell it fits you

You are on the right track if you…

  • did well in school mathematics and physics and like problems with a measurable answer.
  • are ready for careful work with building codes, calculations and documentation.
  • accept site visits and an outdoor summer internship, often with Turkish spoken around you.
  • want to understand how buildings, bridges and soil behave in an earthquake.

Think twice if you…

  • care more about the look and layout of buildings (compare architecture).
  • dislike mechanics and calculations; they run through all four years.
  • would rather manage schedules and budgets than design structures (compare construction management).

Everyday student experience

What happens outside lectures depends on the university, so ask the department what it actually runs: site visits to construction projects, laboratory projects, student engineering clubs and design competitions.

Turkish engineering curricula usually include compulsory summer internships (staj): ask how many working days are required, whether the university helps find a placement and whether a placement in your home country counts. For a semester abroad, ask which Erasmus+ partner universities the department has and whether international degree students can apply; a visa for the host country is a separate step.

Salaries and demand: Turkey and abroad

The Turkish market. Civil engineers in Turkey work for construction, infrastructure, energy and industrial companies, with many employers in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and the industrial centres of Anatolia. Income benchmarks shift quickly: pay ranges are revised annually along with minimum-wage indexation, so always check the current year.

Additional guide to programme language

In engineering fields, language affects drawings, calculations, project briefs and presentations. Bahcesehir lists Civil Engineering as an English-taught bachelor's programme.

Questions and answers

To become a civil engineer in Turkey you need a high-school diploma, a language certificate and denklik (recognition of your previous education). Some universities ask for the YÖS or SAT exam. Under an agreement with StudyU, a consultant can compare universities within budget, help prepare documents and check published scholarship terms. Each university decides admission and confirms individual scholarship terms; funding bodies decide their awards.

Many Turkish universities offer programs in English. Programs in Turkish require a TÖMER certificate. Exact requirements depend on the university.

Compare current vacancies or published pay scales for the exact role, seniority and location you are considering. Check the required language, work authorisation and professional registration alongside compensation. A degree alone does not establish a salary or job offer.
