Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra (Univerzita Konštantína Filozofa v Nitre, UKF) is a public comprehensive university with teacher-training roots: it grew out of a 1959 teachers' institute and now educates teachers, translators, psychologists, IT specialists and health professionals. Most bachelor's programmes admit applicants without an entrance exam, on school grades, and full-time study in Slovak is free. International students on programmes taught only in a foreign language pay from $1,700 (€1,500) a year in 2026/27. For 2027/28, the first bachelor's application round runs until 31 March 2027 and the second until 8 August.

Who UKF suits
UKF is a good match if you want education, languages, psychology, tourism, informatics or nursing in a calm city roughly 90 km from Bratislava. Russian speakers in particular have options here: translation programmes pair Russian with other languages, and the bachelor's and master's in Russian for Intercultural and Business Communication are taught in Russian, Slovak and Ukrainian.
Look at other universities if:
- you want engineering, transport or aviation. Those are the strengths of the University of Žilina and the Technical University of Košice;
- you want to become a doctor. UKF offers nursing and related programmes only; General Medicine is taught by medical faculties such as SZU in Bratislava;
- you need a wide range of fully English-taught degrees. The 2027/28 list has only a handful;
- you are interested in economics or international relations in central Slovakia. Compare with Matej Bel University — the two universities run a joint programme in Central European studies and international relations.
Faculties
| Faculty | Abbreviation | Main fields |
|---|---|---|
| Education | PF | pre-school and primary education, five-year teacher-training master's programmes, the EPTE programme for primary teachers |
| Natural Sciences and Informatics | FPVaI | biology, physics, applied ecology, applied informatics, teacher-training combinations with chemistry, geography and mathematics |
| Social Sciences and Health Care | FSVaZ | psychology, social work, nursing and related health programmes |
| Central European Studies | FSŠ | programmes in Hungarian, Slovak and English, regional tourism, Central European studies |
| Arts | FF | philology, translation and interpreting, journalism, political science, history, culture and tourism management |
The Faculty of Central European Studies was created in 2003 from the national-minority sections of other faculties, so many of its programmes are taught in Hungarian. Check the language of instruction before you choose a FSŠ programme.
Language of instruction
| Route | Programmes for 2027/28 | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Slovak | almost all programmes | usually a Slovak B1 certificate for international applicants where the programme requires it |
| English, alone or with other languages | English only: English studies (bachelor's, doctoral); with Slovak or Hungarian: regional tourism (bachelor's), regional tourism management and English for professional communication (master's), Central European studies | English B2 for English studies; programme conditions |
| Russian with Slovak and Ukrainian | Russian for Intercultural and Business Communication (bachelor's and master's, FF) | Russian B2 for the master's |
| Translation pairs | translation and interpreting combining English, German, Russian, Spanish, Slovak and Hungarian | Slovak is part of every combination |
The Ministry of Education's register (Portál VŠ) lists €0 standard-length tuition for Russian for Intercultural and Business Communication, because it is taught in several languages including Slovak rather than only in a foreign language. Fees apply to programmes taught exclusively in a foreign language, where the international-student rate starts at $1,700 (€1,500) a year. The faculty must state the fee in writing with the admission decision, covering every year of the standard length.
Applying for 2027/28
The faculty dean decides on admission on the recommendation of the admissions committee, and the main criterion is your previous study results. In 2027/28 entrance exams take place only in programmes chosen by each faculty, on 7–11 June 2027. At the Faculty of Arts in 2026/27, for example, only Marketing Communication and Advertising had an exam.
| Stage | Bachelor's | Master's |
|---|---|---|
| First round | until 31 March 2027 | until 30 April 2027 |
| Second round | until 8 August 2027 | until 8 August 2027 |
| Exams (where held) | 7–11 June 2027 | 7–11 June 2027 |
| Fee | $28 (€25) online / $34 (€30) paper | same |
| Open days | 19 November 2026 and 25 February 2027 |
How grades from abroad are assessed
The Faculty of Arts looks at your year-end grades for the two school years equivalent to years 2 and 3 of a four-year Slovak secondary school. Applicants educated abroad attach a certified Slovak translation of their reports and an officially confirmed conversion of their grades into the Slovak scale, where 1 is the best mark and 5 the worst. A top grade of 5 in a Russian report becomes a Slovak 1 after conversion, so a translation without the conversion can cost you ranking points.
Step-by-step plan
- October – December 2026. Choose a faculty and language, check the programme's language requirements and attend the open day on 19 November.
- January – March 2027. Arrange translation and grade conversion, apply online through AiS2 by 31 March and pay the fee.
- April – June 2027. Submit remaining documents and certificates; programmes with exams hold them on 7–11 June.
- After the decision. Confirm in the university system that you will take up the place and submit the online housing application straight away; in 2026 it was open from 1 June to 15 July.
- July – August 2027. Certificate recognition, residence permit documents and room booking.
Recognition of your school certificate
For common certificates from the EU, Ukraine, Russia and China, Slovakia publishes a recognition statement (doložka) that you download from uznavanie.minedu.sk and attach to your certificate. Graduates from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, India and other countries without a statement need a decision from the Regional Office of School Administration (RÚŠS), for UKF the one in Nitra. The Faculty of Arts asks international applicants for certified, translated and recognised education documents. See our guide to recognition of school certificates in Slovakia.

Your living budget in Nitra covers housing, food, insurance and transport; the police may check that a student residence permit holder has at least $4,020 (€3,542.64) for the year. Cost benchmarks are in our guide to the cost of studying in Slovakia; students paying from Russia should use the legal payment routes.
UKF residences
The university has three residences of its own and contracted beds elsewhere in Nitra, including the halls of the Slovak University of Agriculture.
| Residence | Beds | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Zobor, Dražovská 2 | 1,039 | double and triple rooms in two-room units with a shared bathroom; canteen, laundry, gym |
| Nitra, B. Slančíkovej 1 | 443 | mostly triple rooms with bathroom and fridge; full renovation completed in summer 2025 |
| Brezový háj, Nábrežie mládeže 1 | 395 | rooms with kitchens on each floor |
At the end of 2025, 1,868 people lived in UKF residences, all of them full-time students. First-year students qualify if they live more than 50 km or 50 minutes from Nitra and are under 26 on 1 September. In 2026 applications ran from 1 June to 15 July, and the committee announced decisions by 29 July. After approval you have seven working days to pick a room, sign the contract and pay a reservation fee equal to September's rent. UKF does not publish bed prices in the open sections of its website, so ask the accommodation centre (ubytovanie@ukf.sk) before you apply.
Residence permit and timing
Non-EU students need temporary residence for the purpose of study, applied for at the Slovak embassy accredited to your country — for example Moscow for Russian citizens or Astana for Kazakh citizens — with confirmation of admission and an apostilled criminal record certificate. The police decide within 90 days. If you apply in the second round in August, expect to arrive after the semester has started. Details are in our guide to the student residence permit in Slovakia.
UKF has a Russian-language page, an adviser for Russian-speaking students in the international relations office, and a Telegram channel for international students (@ukf_info). Parts of the Russian page are out of date, so check dates and conditions against the Slovak version of the website.
Common mistakes
- Sending translated reports without the grade conversion. A Russian 5 equals a Slovak 1, but the committee needs to see it on an official document.
- Choosing an FSŠ programme without checking its language. Some of the faculty's programmes are taught in Hungarian.
- Missing the housing window. Summer applications are short, and you have only seven working days to pay after approval.
- Relying on the second round. You can apply until 8 August, but little time is left for the residence permit.
- Missing the tuition deadline on a fee-paying programme. In 2026/27 international students paid by 15 August or the date in the dean's decision.
How StudyU helps
The first consultation is free and serves for orientation only. Choosing the UKF faculty and language of study, programme selection, a requirements check, arranging translation and grade conversion, the application, certificate recognition and residence permit documents are provided under an agreement with StudyU. The UKF faculty dean decides on admission, the university housing committee on residence places, and the Slovak foreign police on the residence permit.

FAQ
Do I need an entrance exam for UKF?
For most bachelor's programmes, no: school grades are the main criterion. In 2027/28 exams are held only in programmes chosen by the faculties, on 7–11 June 2027. Check the list in your faculty's admission conditions.
Can I study at UKF for free?
Yes, on a full-time programme taught in Slovak, or one where Slovak is among the languages of instruction, within its standard length. Fees apply to foreign-language-only programmes for international students, from $1,700 (€1,500) a year in 2026/27, and to part-time study or exceeding the standard length.
Does UKF teach any programmes in Russian?
The Faculty of Arts teaches its bachelor's and master's in Russian for Intercultural and Business Communication in Russian, Slovak and Ukrainian. Russian can also be one of the two languages in translation and teacher-training programmes.
Which UKF programmes are taught in English?
The 2027/28 list includes English studies and English language didactics taught in English, while regional tourism, regional tourism management and Central European studies are taught in several languages, including English.
When should I apply for 2027/28?
For bachelor's study, by 31 March 2027 in the first round or 8 August in the second; for master's, by 30 April or 8 August. The first round leaves far more time for housing and the residence permit.
How do I get a room in a UKF residence?
Submit the online housing application in the university system: in 2026 applications ran from 1 June to 15 July and decisions were announced by 29 July. Places go to first-year students under 26 on 1 September whose permanent address is more than 50 km or 50 minutes from Nitra; for applicants from abroad the age limit is usually the condition that matters.
