Nyenrode Business University

Nyenrode is a small private business university on the Nijenrode estate near Utrecht, founded in 1946 by Dutch companies including KLM, Unilever, Shell, Akzo and Philips, and holding university status since 1982. It teaches business only: a three-year BSc in Business Administration, a 16-month MSc in Management, accountancy, MBAs and executive courses.

What you pay for is a residential, network-heavy model: small classes, compulsory sport in the bachelor's, an active student association and interviews at admission. Tuition is set privately and is far above Dutch public universities, so the decision is about format and network rather than the degree title alone.

• Good fit: school leavers with solid maths who want campus life, leadership coaching and a close alumni circle.
• Weak fit: budget-driven applicants, or students who want a large research university with many electives.

Nyenrode calls itself the Netherlands' first private university. The BSc in Business Administration is a recognised Dutch degree programme, which is why eligible Dutch and EU/EEA students can apply to DUO for student finance, and the MSc in Management is accredited by the Dutch-Flemish agency NVAO and by EQUIS.

The degree is a normal academic bachelor's or master's, so it can lead to further study at research universities in the Netherlands and abroad.

Both BSc and full-time MSc run the same curriculum in two places. Breukelen is a campus on a historic estate with a thirteenth-century castle, sports fields, a library and on-site housing that, according to Nyenrode, is available to every bachelor's student there. Amsterdam is a building on the Keizersgracht with a business incubator and city life around it.

Places are limited, and earlier applicants have a better chance of their first-choice location, which is one practical reason to aim for the January deadline.

Year one of the BSc covers business administration, marketing, accounting and finance, academic writing and business mathematics; year two adds strategy, business psychology and operations. A Personal Leadership and Development Journey runs through all three years.

Applications start with an online form, continue in the Osiris admissions portal and include Nyenrode's LTP personality test taken at home. After the test you book an interview with a programme manager; admission days take place every two to four weeks, and a decision letter follows within about two weeks.

1. Autumn 2026: attend an open day (Breukelen 6 October and 21 November, Amsterdam 3 December) or the online session on 8 December.
2. By 15 January 2027: submit the application for the best choice of location.
3. Before 1 May 2027: final deadline; finish any additional maths test beforehand.
4. Mid-August 2027: BSc starts; the MSc pre-master starts in August and the master's phase in January 2028.

Common mistakes

• Applying with a school maths course that does not meet the programme's level and leaving the OMPT-A online test until the last weeks.
• Offering SAT or ACT scores: for US diplomas Nyenrode wants four AP exams instead.
• Assuming a bachelor's graduate skips the pre-master: most international students must take the full pre-master semester.
• Counting on a full scholarship: Nyenrode states it offers none and expects students to cover at least half the tuition themselves.

For the BSc, Nyenrode publishes country rules: a full IB diploma (predicted grades allowed), A-levels at AAB including maths, the German Abitur with at least 10 points in maths and English, or a US diploma with four AP exams including Calculus. Where your school maths is too weak, the OMPT-A online test at 75% or an equivalent maths exam can close the gap, with two attempts allowed.

A colloquium doctum route exists for exceptional applicants who do not meet the standard entry rules.

Nyenrode publishes one fee schedule without a separate non-EU rate. Budget visa costs on top; Dutch student residence permits are decided by the IND.

Rooms on the Breukelen campus cost $409–795 (€360–700) a month for bachelor's students and $681–795 (€600–700) for MSc students; Amsterdam students rent privately at around $1,022–1,363 (€900–1,200) a month.

The alumni-funded Revolving Scholarship from the Nyenrode Fund pays up to $11,355 (€10,000) a year towards tuition; recipients later fund a scholarship for a future student. Awards are decided by the fund, not by an agent.

It suits applicants who value coaching, sport and a tight network over a big-campus choice of electives, and families who can fund around €80,000 in bachelor's tuition. Most BScBA graduates continue to a master's, at Nyenrode or at schools such as Erasmus, the University of Amsterdam, Esade, IE and Bocconi; others start in consulting, finance, marketing and business development.

For the MSc, Nyenrode reports that 90% of graduates find a job within four months. Applicants who need a lower budget should compare applied-sciences options such as Saxion or Fontys.

Programme and location choice, the maths-test plan, application documents and interview preparation are provided under an agreement with StudyU; Nyenrode decides admission, the Nyenrode Fund decides scholarships and the IND decides the residence permit.
