IIT Madras is a public technical university in Chennai, inaugurated in 1959. International applicants can consider two-year interdisciplinary M.Tech degrees and three MA pathways: Development Studies, Economics and English Studies. Budgeting must use the foreign fee category: self-financed international M.Tech, MSc and MA students pay ₹500,000 per semester in tuition in 2026/27.

Engineering or a humanities master’s

The International Interdisciplinary Master’s Programme (I2MP) is designed for international science and engineering graduates. Its two years combine coursework, research preparation and a master’s thesis.

GroupSpecific options
I2MP M.TechRobotics, Quantum Science and Technology, Energy Systems, Computational Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, and Complex Systems and Dynamics.
Other international M.Tech optionsExamples include Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Electric Vehicles, Ocean Structures, and Industrial Mathematics and Scientific Computing.
MA Development StudiesSocial-science foundations in the first year, then electives across sociology, anthropology, history and technology studies.
MA EconomicsFour semesters with 11 core courses, electives, research methods and projects.
MA English StudiesLiterature, cultural studies, film and environmental humanities, progressing from theory to specialised courses.

I2MP is useful when an engineering graduate’s interests sit between conventional departments: robotics, for example, calls for matching prior study to more than one field. A humanities applicant can compare the three MA curricula without assuming that the institute’s technical name limits every degree to engineering.

Your qualification, English and application route

The explicit international M.Tech/I2MP eligibility list accepts a four-year engineering bachelor’s, science honours structured as 3+1 years, or a five-year master’s qualification in science or a relevant field. A three-year bachelor’s alone is ineligible. MA applicants need a bachelor’s in disciplines relevant to their selected programme.

International applications include degree certificates and transcripts, a passport, CV, statement of purpose and recommendations. After the eligibility review, the department communicates its interview, test or additional-document requirements. Teaching is in English, and applicants must demonstrate sufficient proficiency for academic study and research.

For M.Tech Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, the international page specifically exempts graduates of foreign universities from GATE. It gives a GATE-DA requirement for graduates of Indian universities, with an IIT-graduate exception. This is a programme-specific distinction, not a blanket exemption for every qualification and master’s course.

The ICCR step. International application instructions describe an IITM application accompanied by an ICCR application number; the I2MP FAQ also lists self-financing and other sponsorship routes. ICCR applicants should complete both applications and supply the number. Before submitting a self-financed application without ICCR, obtain the applicable procedure from the Office of Global Engagement at intl.admissions@ge.iitm.ac.in. The issue affects whether the application is processed, not just whether funding is awarded.

Applying after secondary school

The undergraduate engineering route uses JEE Advanced and subsequent JoSAA allocation. For 2026, foreign citizens without OCI/PIO status can register directly for Advanced without JEE Main. Foreign supernumerary seats are capped at 10% per programme, and applicants must reach its OPEN, gender-neutral closing rank.

An eleven-year Russian school certificate requires assessment of Class XII equivalence. The JEE 2026 brochure calls for AIU certification of overseas school qualifications. Physics, chemistry and mathematics and the 75% or top-20-percentile school-results condition also apply. Age, school-leaving year and previous attempts must be assessed against the particular intake. Resolve eligibility before investing in an examination preparation plan.

2026/27 international fees

IIT Madras’s circular dated 4 May 2026 covers new students in the 2026 batch for July–November. The following applies to a self-financed foreign national without an older OCI/PIO card:

ChargeUndergraduate; M.Tech / MSc / MA
Tuition₹500,000 per semester
Enrolment, medical, student charges and seat rent₹13,000 per semester, including ₹7,500 seat rent
One-time charges₹50,000
Refundable caution deposit₹5,000
First institute payment₹568,000

Foreign-student insurance and separate hostel charges, including meals, are additional. Seat rent is already inside the ₹13,000 figure and should not be added twice. The institute can revise subsequent semester rates, and the first payment contains one-time items: multiplying ₹568,000 by four does not produce a correct two-year degree price.

The same postgraduate table has separate tuition categories for students funded by ICCR: ₹75,000 per semester for SAARC and ₹150,000 for non-SAARC countries. These require the relevant confirmed funding category. They are not discounts for every foreign applicant or everyone who has merely submitted a scholarship application. OCI/PIO cards issued before 4 March 2021 have separate rules in the circular’s footnotes.

Scholarships, housing and campus life

The Office of Global Engagement lists the competitive IIT Madras GE Scholarship for international applicants and the RV Chakrapani International Student Fellowship: two fully funded awards for a master’s in Civil Engineering. Choose the funding route together with the degree. A civil-engineering award cannot be assumed to cover Robotics or MA English Studies.

IIT Madras has a large wooded campus in Chennai with student hostels. Its international M.Tech and MA pages describe campus accommodation subject to institute rules and availability. Foreign nationals need medical insurance throughout their stay; the Office of Global Engagement handles insurance for full-time foreign students separately from the institute fee portal.

Compare the full plan with IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi. A domestic tuition figure does not show what an international student pays, and this category difference can change the choice between the three institutions.

Before moving to Chennai

Once you have chosen a programme and funding route, register with Study in India for your SII ID. The identifier and admission offer are required in the student visa process. The government portal states that holders of student visas valid for more than 180 days must register with FRRO within 14 days of their first arrival.

Plan separately for life after graduation: an Indian degree does not automatically provide a work visa. The India study guide connects these steps with the wider destination decision. Fees and JEE rules shown here cover the published 2026/27 cycle; for a later intake, match your school-leaving year and examination attempts to its rules before paying.

Frequently asked questions

Does IIT Madras offer humanities master’s degrees?

Yes. Its two-year MA programmes have three streams: Development Studies, Economics and English Studies. Applicants need a bachelor’s in disciplines relevant to the selected programme.

Is a three-year bachelor’s enough for I2MP?

Not on its own. The explicit international M.Tech/I2MP list accepts a four-year engineering bachelor’s, science honours structured as 3+1 years, or a five-year master’s qualification in science or a relevant field.

What does a self-financed international master’s student pay?

For new international M.Tech, MSc and MA students in 2026/27, tuition is ₹500,000 per semester. The first institute payment with the listed charges and deposit is ₹568,000; insurance and separate hostel and meal costs are additional.

Does a self-financed applicant need an ICCR number?

The international instructions ask for an ICCR number, while the I2MP FAQ also permits self-financing and other sponsorship routes. Before applying without ICCR, obtain the applicable procedure from the Office of Global Engagement at intl.admissions@ge.iitm.ac.in.

An initial StudyU consultation can help match your qualification to an engineering or humanities route and estimate the international budget. Application and document support are agreed under a service contract after selecting the programme and funding approach. The institution or relevant scholarship body decides admission and funding.
