Visa and residence

Students receive a D visa based on the enrolment certificate the university obtains via the education ministry, then a residence permit in Bulgaria for the academic year. The pipeline is well-worn - the country has admitted international students for decades - and renewals follow continued enrolment.

Language tracks and what to study

Bulgaria's magnet is medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in English at a fraction of Western prices, with degrees valid across the EU. A cheaper alternative: a preparatory year of Bulgarian followed by study in the local language. Slavic proximity makes daily life easy for Russian speakers from day one, and Bulgarian itself builds up within a semester of immersion.

Cities, budget and the calendar

Sofia has the capital rhythm and biggest universities; Plovdiv is a compact student city with a medical university; Varna means studying by the sea. Budgets are among the gentlest in the EU - dorm or room, food and transport combined often cost less than in CIS capitals, and flights home are short. Intake is in October with documents prepared from winter: apostilled certificate, translations, and for medicine - biology and chemistry grades (some universities run entrance tests in these subjects; dates are fixed, so we plan around them). The ministry step adds weeks to the calendar, which we build in from the start. Bulgaria remains the most affordable entrance into EU medicine with a transparent, non-lottery admission.
