VSB – Technical University of Ostrava (VŠB – Technická univerzita Ostrava, VŠB-TUO) is a public technical university in eastern Czechia with seven faculties, from mining, geology and metallurgy to computer science, economics, civil engineering and safety engineering. Czech-taught degrees are free for all nationalities, typically with Czech at about B2. English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes cost CZK 50,000 ($2,320) per semester from 2026/27, or about $4,650 a year. For most faculties the first application round for 2027/28 runs from 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, with one intake each September. VŠB-TUO is a separate institution from the University of Ostrava (Ostravská univerzita).

| Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|
| Wide engineering choice: IT, electrical and mechanical engineering, materials, civil engineering, geology, safety | Ostrava is smaller than Prague or Brno, with fewer employers |
| One flat rate for all English bachelor's and master's programmes, CZK 100,000 a year | One English intake a year |
| B1 English threshold rather than B2 | Several faculties rely on Scio tests that need early registration |
| Free Czech track at every faculty | Czech at about B2 needed; language courses are paid |

VŠB-TUO fits applicants who want engineering or IT at a moderate price with close industry links. For a technical university in the capital, compare it with Czech Technical University (ČVUT); in a larger student city, with Brno University of Technology. How do you apply to English-taught programmes for 2027/28?
All applicants choose a programme, apply online at prihlaska.vsb.cz, pay the CZK 700 fee, upload their school-leaving certificate (or bachelor's diploma for a master's) and go through recognition of previous education. Entrance tests differ by faculty:
| Faculty | Round 1 | Tests |
|---|---|---|
| Mining and Geology | 1 Oct 2026 – 31 Jan 2027 | English test 15–19 Feb 2027; Scio National Comparative Exam in mathematics on 30 Jan or 20 Feb 2027 |
| Materials Science and Technology | 1 Oct 2026 – 31 Jan 2027 | exams 15–19 Feb 2027 |
| Economics | 1 Oct 2026 – 31 Jan 2027 | English test 15–19 Feb 2027; Scio General Academic Prerequisites (GAP) on 22 Oct or 5 Nov 2026, 30 Jan or 20 Feb 2027 |
| Electrical Engineering and Computer Science | 1 Oct 2026 – 31 Jan 2027 | English in mid-February; Scio maths 30.01 or 20.02.2027 |
| Safety Engineering | 1 Oct 2026 – 31 Jan 2027 | bachelor's applicants: GAP by 20 Feb 2027 |
At these faculties, documents for recognition must arrive by 31 January 2027. Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering publish their own dates. Applicants also submit a motivation letter and an English certificate at B1 or above (the university points to IELTS 5.5–6.0); most faculties accept proof that your previous studies were in English instead. Each faculty's study office handles its own admissions.
How do you study for free in Czech?
The university says Czech-taught study typically requires about B2 and that many international students spend several months to a year learning the language first. It points applicants to its own Institute of Languages and to the preparatory programmes of Charles University's Institute for Language and Preparatory Studies; both charge course fees. See Czech preparatory courses.
Each faculty sets its own admission rules, including the Czech requirement for international applicants, in its "Podmínky přijetí". The Faculty of Materials Science and Technology, for example, required a B2 Czech certificate in 2026/27 from applicants without a Czech or Slovak school-leaving exam in the language, and international students admitted to Czech-taught programmes at the Faculty of Safety Engineering must enrol in person rather than online. At the Faculty of Economics in the 2026 cycle, the first round ran from 1 December 2025 to 31 March 2026, the fee was CZK 600 ($28), and admission depended on the Scio "Obecné studijní předpoklady" (OSP) percentile set by the dean after applications closed. Do you need nostrification?
You can submit a nostrification certificate from a Czech regional authority or the Ministry of Education, which avoids any assessment fee, or ask VŠB-TUO to assess your education for CZK 800. The university's assessment is valid only for its own admission procedure in that year, and no certificate is issued. Certified copies of your certificate and a transcript listing subjects and hours per year, with an official translation into Czech or English by a sworn translator or a Czech consulate, must be posted on paper to the faculty's study office; email is not accepted. See nostrification in Czechia.
What visa rules apply to Russian, Kazakh and Belarusian citizens?
Non-EU students need a long-term visa or residence permit for study and must show CZK 115,810 ($5,380) for 12 months; the Ministry of the Interior decides. See our student visa guide.
- Russian and Belarusian citizens. Government Regulation No. 55/2024 makes residence applications they file at Czech embassies inadmissible, dual nationals included. It was unchanged on 1 October 2026, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the restrictions on 9 February 2026. Russian students have no exemption; Belarusians qualify only with specific Czech government, Czech Ministry of Education or EU scholarships. Only biometric Russian passports are recognised.
- Kazakh citizens apply at the Czech Embassy in Astana by appointment; see studying in Czechia for Kazakh students.

Apply through the ISKAM system and pay a CZK 8,000 ($370) deposit if you come from abroad (Slovakia excepted). If a roommate leaves, your rate rises under the "dynamic" tariff, except from July to September.
Which mistakes cost applicants a place?
- Confusing VŠB-TUO with the University of Ostrava.
- Missing Round 1: for most faculties it closes on 31 January, and there is only a September intake.
- Registering too late for the Scio maths or GAP test, which run on fixed dates.
- Emailing recognition documents, which are accepted only on paper by post.
- Planning Czech-taught study without reading your faculty's conditions: some require a B2 certificate, others an exam or a Scio test, and 2027/28 rules are published faculty by faculty.
