Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin)

Technological University Dublin is Ireland’s first technological university and Dublin’s second-largest, with 28,500 students across five campuses. It grew out of the Dublin Institute of Technology, which is why older guides still call it DIT.

Compared with Trinity and UCD, it is more applied and considerably cheaper. Most Level 8 honours bachelor’s degrees cost international students $15,330 (€13,500) a year in 2026/27, while engineering and some sciences cost $16,460 (€14,500).

• Strengths: engineering, computing, architecture and construction, culinary arts and hospitality, media and design.
• Good fit: students who want career-focused study in Dublin with tuition under about $17,000 a year.
• Less suitable: applicants who rank global league-table position above everything else.

Technological University status is new in Ireland and TU Dublin was the first to receive it. It awards the same bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees as traditional universities, with more emphasis on labs, applied projects and employer links.

TU Dublin also offers a qualification ladder: a two-year Higher Certificate (Level 6), a three-year Ordinary Bachelor (Level 7) and a Level 8 Honours Bachelor. For post-study Stamp 1G, only Level 8 and above count.

Check the campus before you choose where to rent. Grangegorman, the main campus north of the centre, hosts computing, most sciences, media, design and culinary programmes. Aungier Street in the city centre focuses on business, accounting and economics, and Bolton Street on architecture, construction and engineering.

Blanchardstown in the north-west and Tallaght in the south-west are suburban campuses with applied computing, business, engineering and social care degrees. Rents nearby tend to be lower, but the commute into central Dublin is longer.

Figures come from TU Dublin’s 2026/27 international brochures. The university quotes an overall range of $14,190 (€12,500) to $24,700 (€21,750) a year depending on the course.

Architecture, design and fine art require a portfolio, and drama and music an audition; admissions explains the format after you apply.

International students apply directly through the CRM Recruit link on each course page, paying a non-refundable €50 fee. For September 2026 the closing date was 26 June 2026; the 2027 date has not been announced, so a winter application is the safe plan.

TU Dublin does not publish a country table for the Russian Attestat and assesses each file individually. Students who fall short academically or in English can use its own preparatory programmes at Aungier Street.

Completing the Foundation earns a Level 6 certificate (60 ECTS) and a place on the chosen TU Dublin degree. Bridging suits students who meet the academic bar but are half a band short in IELTS.

What most often delays a start

• Underestimating the visa: processing can take up to 12 weeks.
• Age: students must turn 18 by 31 December of their start year or stay with a host family until they do.
• Payment: a place is held only after 50% of tuition arrives, and transfers can take five working days.

• IELTS or equivalent issued within two years of the course start
• CV and statement of purpose (required for master’s)
• Portfolio for architecture, design and art

The baseline is IELTS 6.0 with no band below 6.0. Law, economics and finance ask for 6.5, and journalism, film and Business & Law for 7.0. Conditional offers arrive by email only, and missing documents should be sent as soon as they are issued.

Tuition is roughly half of what Trinity or UCD charge, while the visa living-cost requirement stays the same: at least €10,000 a year.

The international Fees & Funding page lists no general undergraduate scholarship scheme, so plan the budget without assuming a discount.

TU Dublin does not allocate residence rooms the way Trinity or UCD do. It points students to purpose-built student accommodation, host families and private rentals.

Student services advise against booking private housing before arrival because of scams and suggest temporary accommodation for the first two weeks so you can view properties in person. Irish rules cap a deposit at one month’s rent, and you should keep a receipt.

Russian students need an Irish study visa and Stamp 2 registration after arrival. The visa file needs proof of payment, and TU Dublin holds a place only once at least half of the annual fee has arrived.

An honours bachelor’s (Level 8) can lead to 12 months on Stamp 1G, and a Level 9 master’s to 12 months renewable once. Higher Certificate and Ordinary Bachelor graduates are not covered, which matters when choosing the entry level.
