Program overview

Compare communication theory with video, audio, web and interactive work. Review how students investigate audiences and evaluate content, and how the curriculum balances creative production with analysis.

Use the curriculum and university options below to build a shortlist. Confirm the exact degree level, teaching language, course sequence and practical requirements with each university; similar programme names do not make the courses interchangeable.

Program structure

The degree takes four years. The list below follows the department courses of the New Media and Communication plan at Kadir Has; students also take university-wide courses and electives. Bahcesehir builds its New Media degree more around news gathering for online media, so compare the published curriculum of each programme you shortlist.

  • Introduction to new media
  • History of communication technologies
  • Keywords in new media and in the social sciences
  • Basics of visual design
Years 2–3
  • Digital communities
  • News and storytelling
  • New media and society
  • Content strategies for new media
  • Digital research studio and building digital start-ups
Year 4

Your career outlook

Roles graduates commonly move into are listed below; employers usually ask for a portfolio of published work.

Editor or writer for English-language online media: reports, writes and edits stories for websites and social platforms.

Content strategist for a brand or platform: decides what to publish, where and for whom, and checks the results.

Social media and community manager: runs accounts, moderates communities and reports on engagement.

Audience researcher or media analyst: studies how people use platforms through surveys and analytics.

Digital project producer: coordinates writers, designers and video teams on special projects.

For jobs in Istanbul you will still need working Turkish, and a foreign graduate needs a work permit; the English-taught degree is easier to use in international companies or for a master’s in Europe.

Should you choose New Media?

Choose it if you…

  • want to study media entirely in English
  • already write, film or run projects online and want to build a portfolio
  • aim to work in international companies or continue to a master’s in Europe
  • can plan for private-university fees for four years, or five with an English preparatory year

Take a moment if you…

  • want classic news journalism: compare Journalism
  • are drawn mainly to video and film: compare film and television programmes
  • need to pay less than $8 500 a year, the lowest bachelor’s price in the table below

Life beyond classes

What happens outside lectures depends on the university, so ask the department what it actually runs: student radio, TV or online publications, content projects for real clients and media festivals.

Ask whether the curriculum includes a compulsory internship (staj), how long it is, whether the university helps find a placement and whether a placement in your home country counts. For a semester abroad, ask which Erasmus+ partner universities the department has and whether international degree students can apply; a visa for the host country is a separate step.

Additional guide to programme language

For New Media, language affects projects, presentations and work with international digital references. Bahcesehir lists New Media in English, while Topkapi lists New Media and Communication in Turkish.

Frequently asked questions

An 11-year school certificate is assessed under the chosen university’s rules. Confirm equivalence, subjects, grades, language and any programme-specific selection requirements before applying. The university decides admission; document recognition and registration remain separate checks.

English-taught tracks ask for proof of English, such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or the university's own proficiency exam (several universities, including Bahçeşehir, do not accept IELTS); Turkish-taught tracks ask for Turkish proof such as a TÖMER certificate. Applicants below the required level usually take a one-year preparatory programme first.

How to apply for New Media in Turkey

The university assesses the specific school qualification, subjects, grades and teaching-language requirements for this programme. With an 11-year certificate, confirm eligibility and any exams, portfolio or other selection steps for the chosen intake. Check which language certificates or university assessments are accepted; denklik and registration requirements are separate from admission. Under an agreement with StudyU, we help prepare the agreed application and equivalence documents; the university decides admission and the competent authority decides equivalence. Start 6–9 months ahead to allow time for the university’s published procedure and document checks.
