Student Accommodation in Turkey: 2025 Edition

Turkish universities are home to over 300,000 international students — a number that continues to grow each year. When considering studying in Turkey, it’s important to also factor in housing options and the overall cost of living.

There are three main types of student accommodation in Turkey:

1. On-Campus Housing

For many students, on-campus accommodation is the best option due to its safety, proximity to academic buildings and university facilities, and overall affordability. The minimum housing fee is around $1,300 per academic year for a shared room with four students, and from $4,700 for a single room, with other options in between.

Dormitories typically offer a range of amenities such as free laundry rooms, common areas, and fitness centers. All utilities are included in the price, and weekly cleaning services are generally provided.

How to apply for on-campus housing?

The application period usually begins about one month before the semester starts, via the official university website. It’s open to all students, but preference is typically given to international and out-of-city students.

2. City dormitories

Since not all Turkish universities offer on-campus housing, privately owned dormitories located near universities are a common alternative. These dorms often operate in affiliation with universities and usually come at a slightly higher cost than on-campus options. Facilities are generally similar, though this varies depending on the dormitory.

These dorms may house students from multiple universities. However, the main drawback can be the location — many are farther from campus, meaning students may need to commute by bus, metro, or other public transportation.

3. Renting an Apartment

Renting an apartment gives students more independence and flexibility. However, Turkey has recently experienced a sharp increase in rental prices. Monthly rent starts at around $500 in areas farther from the city center, totaling approximately $4,500 per year.

Sharing an apartment with roommates can be a more budget-friendly option for international students.
