Kristianstad University

Kristianstad University (Högskolan Kristianstad, HKR) is a single-campus university in southern Sweden, ten minutes from Kristianstad town centre. For international students it runs six English-taught programmes — two computing bachelor’s degrees and four one-year master’s — at $10,950 (SEK 110,000) or $13,440 (SEK 135,000) a year for non-EU/EEA citizens. Applications for autumn 2027 go through universityadmissions.se by 15 January 2027.

HKR has about 14,000 students. It was founded in 1977, with roots in a teacher-training college from 1835, and describes itself as the only Swedish university with work-integrated education in all undergraduate programmes. It also states that its business administration, oral health, psychology master’s and food and meal science programmes received the top rating in evaluations by the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ).

The real selling points for a fee-paying student are price and funding: the marketing and auditing master’s cost less for the whole programme than a single year of any Lund University master’s, and HKR’s own scholarship typically covers half or all of the fee.

Software Development covers programming, databases, networks, operating systems, algorithms, cybersecurity, frontend and backend development, AI, data engineering, DevOps and cloud development, with a work placement and a final degree project. The engineering degree adds electronics, sensors, embedded systems, computer architecture, machine learning and cloud and edge computing.

The one-year Machine Learning master’s can be extended to a full master’s degree through HKR’s collaboration with Landshut University of Applied Sciences in Germany.

Eligibility is assessed by University Admissions in Sweden. Bachelor’s applicants need completed upper-secondary education giving university access at home, English 6, and programme-specific subjects; master’s applicants need a recognised bachelor’s degree plus the programme’s credits.

• Software Development: intermediate-level mathematics.
• Computer Science and Engineering: intermediate physics, basic chemistry or intermediate natural sciences, and advanced+ mathematics.
• Machine Learning: a bachelor’s in computer science or computer engineering with at least 22.5 credits of programming and 22.5 of mathematics, including 3.5 of statistics.
• Marketing: a 180-credit bachelor’s with 90 credits of business administration, including 15 in marketing, 15 in statistics or business methods, and a 15-credit independent project.
• Accounting and Auditing: the same structure, with 15 credits drawn from intermediate accounting, management accounting, corporate governance and auditing.

English 6 usually means IELTS Academic 6.5 with no section below 5.5, or TOEFL iBT 90. Country rules decide whether school English counts and what documents are needed; for Russia, for instance, a bachelor’s degree must be at least four years long to qualify for master’s study.

Ranking carries extra weight at HKR: the university considers scholarship applications only from applicants who put a Kristianstad programme first. An offer for a higher choice also deletes the lower ones.

Because final school results are due by 1 February and Sweden makes no conditional bachelor’s offers in this round, students finishing school in mid-2027 normally apply for autumn 2028.

Fees come from HKR’s brochure for programmes starting in 2027 and 2028. They are invoiced per semester, and the first instalment must be paid before you apply for the residence permit. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens pay no tuition.

HKR awards scholarships each year to fee-paying students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland. An award normally covers 50–100% of tuition and is deducted from your invoice; it does not cover living costs or family members.

• Apply for the programme and pay the SEK 900 fee first; the scholarship form comes afterwards.
• Selection is merit-based, using the documents you uploaded to universityadmissions.se; financial need is not considered.
• Documents registered after 2 February are ignored for the autumn round.
• Priority goes to on-time applicants who rank HKR first, to campus-based master’s applicants, and to strong academic records.

The autumn 2027 scholarship round has not opened yet; decisions arrive the week after admission results. Swedish Institute scholarships for global professionals are an alternative only for citizens of the 34 countries in the SI call.

Non-EU students on campus programmes apply online to the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) for a residence permit for studies after admission and payment of the first instalment. The agency decides; 75% of recent cases were decided within three months.

• Show SEK 10,656 ($1,060) a month for the permit period, with a bank statement no older than four months before the permit start.
• Choose an embassy for passport verification or interview; not every Swedish embassy handles migration cases.
• Studies shorter than a year require comprehensive health insurance for the whole stay.

For permits granted on or after 11 June 2026, students may work up to 15 hours a week during term, without a cap in June to August, for programme internships or for student representation, administration or research work at the university. A separate permit allows graduates to stay and look for work.

Everything sits on one compact campus: library, restaurant, café, student union, health centre and student dormitories. If you pay tuition or hold an HKR scholarship, the university helps you find a room in a student dorm; apply for housing once admitted, by 1 May for the autumn semester or 1 November for spring. Rooms in the private student dorms are furnished and have internet. You sign the tenancy agreement with the landlord on arrival; the landlord may charge a deposit of up to three months’ rent and bills the full first and last month even if you arrive later. HKR does not arrange housing for accompanying family.

New students get a pick-up service on arrival, an introduction week, social activities and trips around Sweden. Kristianstad was named Student City of the Year 2024 by the Swedish National Union of Students (SFS), and HKR belongs to the COLOURS European university alliance with eight partner universities.

HKR is a weaker fit if you:

• want a wide choice of English-taught degrees — there are six, and the bachelor’s are both in computing; compare Lund University;
• hope to move to Sweden on the Food and Meal Science master’s, which is taught entirely online;
• finish school in 2027 and must start that autumn.

Common mistakes:

• ranking HKR second and expecting a scholarship;
• uploading documents after 2 February;
• applying to Marketing or Auditing without checking the 90-credit and 15-credit blocks against your transcript;
• an IELTS 6.5 with one section at 5.0;
• planning on more than 15 hours of work a week during term.
