# Zhejiang University

Zhejiang University (ZJU, "Zheda") is a large research university in Hangzhou, ranked 47th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and 24th in ARWU 2026. Its standard fees for international students are among the lowest of China's leading universities: a Chinese-taught bachelor's costs $2,950–4,440 a year, and English-taught graduate study carries a surcharge of $1,190 (CNY 8,000) a year. In return, ZJU requires HSK for Chinese-taught programmes and CSCA for every bachelor's. In the 2026 cycle bachelor's applications ran from 1 December to 28 February, with some programmes open until 31 May; the 2027 guides have not yet been published.

## Which programmes are taught in Chinese and English {#section-2}

### Chinese-taught bachelor's

The 2026 catalogue lists around 40 programmes or programme groups across 13 disciplines: philosophy, literature, history, foreign languages (including Russian, English, German, French, Spanish and Japanese), journalism, economics, law, mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, engineering, agriculture, veterinary science, medicine, and art and technology. Each entry lists the minimum HSK and the CSCA subjects.

MBBS and biomedical engineering require at least 70% in school mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, and IB or A-Level results can replace an English certificate. ### English-taught master's

The 2026 catalogue contains dozens of English-taught master's programmes: linguistics, international affairs and global governance, Chinese economy and China studies, management and MBA, finance (iMF), mathematics, mechanical and electrical engineering, energy (including a dual degree with Politecnico di Milano), integrated circuits, computer science, cyberspace security, control engineering, software, data science (iMDS), optics, civil engineering, environmental science, crop science and plant protection, veterinary science, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and more. Some run on the Haining campus.

## How to apply to ZJU: requirements for international applicants {#section-3}

### Bachelor's

- Nationality: a foreign passport valid beyond 1 March of the year after entry. Former Chinese citizens and children of Chinese citizens face extra rules, including at least two years of residence abroad in the past four years.
- Age: under 25; applicants under 18 on 1 September need an adult guardian living in mainland China.
- Education: a school diploma (current final-year students submit a status certificate and bring the diploma to registration) and transcripts for all high-school years, ideally with class rank.
- CSCA: mandatory for all bachelor's programmes from 2026/27. Subjects and paper language are in the catalogue: Chinese for Chinese-taught programmes, English for English-taught ones.
- Language: most Chinese-taught programmes need HSK 5 at 180+, some more (up to HSK 6 at 220). Graduates of Chinese-medium schools are exempt. English-taught programmes need TOEFL, IELTS or another certificate.
- Other documents: a personal statement of about 800 words, two recommendation letters from high-school teachers, award certificates if any, and a signed applicant commitment.
- Selection: document review, then a video interview with the academic school.

After pre-admission you must prepay the first year's tuition in the system within the stated period; if you later withdraw, it is not refunded. The admission notice can be downloaded from the end of June, and the link to the electronic visa form arrives by email.

### Master's and doctoral

- A bachelor's degree (a master's for PhD) with transcripts; final-year students submit a status certificate and bring the degree to registration.
- Age under 35 for master's, with flexibility for healthy applicants with work experience and strong academic records.
- Language: HSK 5 at 180+ for Chinese-taught programmes; IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90, Duolingo 120, CAE or CPE 180, or proof of English-medium study for English-taught ones.
- A personal statement of at least 1,500 words with a study plan and two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors; some programmes require a provisional acceptance form signed by a ZJU supervisor.
- Selection by document review and video interview.

### Step-by-step plan for 2027

1. September–November 2026. Choose a programme in the catalogue, check its minimum HSK and CSCA subjects, and register for both tests.
2. December 2026. If 2026 timing repeats, bachelor's and master's applications open on 1 December; CSC Type B through ZJU closed on 31 December last cycle.
3. By 28 February 2027. Main deadline for self-funded applicants and the Zhejiang Provincial Scholarship; English-taught bachelor's and some master's run to 31 May.
4. Spring 2027. Video interview, pre-admission and first-year prepayment (bachelor's).
5. End of June–end of July 2027. Admission notice and electronic visa form; X1 visa.
6. Late August–early September 2027. Online pre-registration, then on-site registration; book housing online in advance.

That is why most English-taught master's in the catalogue cost $5,490 (CNY 36,800) a year. Some programmes cost more: MBA, finance and international-campus programmes reach $32,500 (CNY 218,000) or more per programme. Insurance is $120 (CNY 800) a year and the application fee $120 (CNY 800). Fees are paid in yuan through the system or by bank transfer to ZJU's Bank of China account.

## What living in Hangzhou costs {#section-6}

International dorms operate on the Zijingang (east and west), Yuquan and Huajiachi campuses. Rates in force since 1 January 2023 exclude utilities and bedding for long-term residents (90+ days):

Long-term residents pay at least a full academic year in advance. Rooms are reserved online in an announced period, and without a reservation the university does not assign housing. Check-in is possible at most three days before registration, and there is no family accommodation. If you rent in the city, file an off-campus dwelling form and register with the police within 24 hours.

For monthly spending, the CSC stipend is a benchmark: a master's scholar receives $450 (CNY 3,000) and a doctoral scholar $520 (CNY 3,500) a month on top of free housing. ZJU states explicitly that only CSC Type A supports bachelor's study, and its CSC pre-admission letter is a supporting document, not an offer. ## How to get the X1 visa and residence permit {#section-8}

ZJU no longer issues paper admission letters or visa forms: you download the admission notice from the system and receive a link to the electronic study-visa form (JW202 for self-funded, JW201 for scholarship students) by email. ## What helps and what gets in the way for applicants from Russia, Kazakhstan and the CIS {#section-9}

- Standard bachelor's fees are lower than at Tsinghua, PKU, Fudan, SJTU and Tongji, from $2,950 a year.
- A long window from December to February, and a late 31 May deadline for English-taught bachelor's programmes.
- The catalogue includes language majors, among them Russian; the School of International Studies weighs both Chinese and English in selection.
- HSK is needed at the point of application for Chinese-taught bachelor's; beginners usually need a [Chinese language programme](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-chinese-language-programs-in-china) or [foundation year](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-foundation-year-in-china).
- First-year prepayment is non-refundable.
- Fees are in yuan only; check early which legal route your bank offers for transfers to ZJU's Bank of China account.

## Which mistakes to avoid {#section-10}

- Taking CSCA in the wrong language. Chinese-taught programmes need Chinese papers; English-taught programmes need English papers.
- Applying below a programme's HSK threshold. Minimums range from HSK 5 at 180 to HSK 6 at 220.
- Posting or emailing documents. ZJU only reviews what is uploaded to its system.
- Skipping the housing reservation. No online booking means no campus room, and payment is for a full year.
- Counting on CSC Type B for a bachelor's. Only Type A applies.

## Where teaching takes place: campuses and city {#section-11}

The International College and admissions office are in the west zone of Zijingang campus in Hangzhou, which also has two international dorms; further international dorms are on the Yuquan and Huajiachi campuses. The Haining international campus hosts the International Business School and the joint institute with the University of Edinburgh, and English-taught medicine is at the International School of Medicine in Yiwu. Check the catalogue for your teaching location before arranging housing.

### How much does Zhejiang University cost?

Chinese-taught bachelor's: $2,950–4,440 a year (CNY 19,800–29,800); MBBS $6,380. Chinese-taught master's: $3,400–4,890; most English-taught master's: $5,490 a year (CNY 36,800).

### Is CSCA required at ZJU?

Yes, for all bachelor's programmes from 2026/27, including English-taught ones. It is not required for master's programmes.
