# Western University (University of Western Ontario): Admission and Fees

Western University is the brand name of The University of Western Ontario, a public university in London, Ontario, about two hours from Toronto. International school-leavers apply through OUAC, and Western accepts the Russian attestat for direct entry to a bachelor's degree when the programme's prerequisite subjects are in place; admitted students typically hold at least the equivalent of a Canadian B average. To be considered alongside the first wave of applicants, submit by 15 January 2027. In 2026/27 international tuition is $33,490 (CAD 47,493) a year for most programmes, $38,900 (CAD 55,167) in Computer Science and $45,340 (CAD 64,310) in Engineering.

It is not Western Sydney University in Australia, Northwestern University in the USA or Western University of Health Sciences in California.

## Who Western suits {#section-1}

Western suits students who want a classic campus university: a large green campus, more than 30 food outlets, residences close to classrooms and a city where the university shapes student life. Strong areas include business (Ivey), medical and health sciences, engineering, media, music and kinesiology.

Our country page on [studying in Canada](https://www.studyu.org/en/country-canada) covers colleges, universities and budgets.

Compare it with:

- the [University of Toronto](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-toronto) if you want a major city and its internship market;
- the [University of Waterloo](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-waterloo) if paid co-op terms are central to your plan;
- other options in the [cost of studying in Canada](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-cost-of-studying-in-canada) if you need a bachelor's under $30,000 a year.

## How degrees are structured {#section-2}

Many Western programmes start with a broad first year, after which students choose their module. Two affiliated colleges, Huron University and King's University College, run their own admissions and programmes, but their graduates receive Western degrees. Brescia University College fully integrated into Western in May 2024.

Ivey and the HBA. The Honours Business Administration covers years three and four. Students spend their first two years in any Western or affiliated-college programme. High school students can apply for Advanced Entry Opportunity (AEO) status, a conditional place in the HBA, by ticking Ivey AEO on the OUAC application and submitting a separate AEO application with essays by 15 January. Ivey describes a competitive application as a low-90s average in the best Grade 12 courses including English, a university-preparatory mathematics course and demonstrated leadership. About two-thirds of each HBA class hold AEO status.

## Requirements for Russian school-leavers {#section-3}

Western's Russia page lists the certificate of general secondary education (or the certificate of complete secondary education for graduates before 2013) showing all subjects and grades. All required and recommended courses must be at senior level. Admitted students typically have at least the equivalent of a Canadian B (3.0); competitive programmes require more. Western calculates your average from your curriculum and grading scale.

| Area | Required subjects | Extra requirements |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Arts & Humanities | none | Studio Arts portfolio and statement by 15 February 2027 |
| Computer Science, Science | mathematics and any science | Integrated Science has its own application |
| Engineering | chemistry, physics, mathematics | Casper test mandatory |
| Health Sciences | biology, mathematics | chemistry recommended |
| Medical Sciences | biology, chemistry, mathematics | physics recommended |
| Management & Organizational Studies | mathematics | aviation option form by 1 March 2027 |
| Nursing | biology, chemistry, English, mathematics | — |
| Social Science | none | calculus-level maths needed for Economics |

Casper. Engineering cannot make an offer without Casper results, which take about three weeks to reach Western.

Documents. Within 10 business days of applying on OUAC you receive Student Center login details and a To Do List. Upload copies first; anything not in English needs a notarised literal English translation. After you accept an offer, your school sends final official documents through World Education Services (WES) Canada as a "WES-Basic Document-by-Document ICAP" report. You can apply before graduating and receive a conditional offer. See [bachelor's degrees in Canada](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-bachelors-in-canada).

## English requirements {#section-4}

Tests must be taken before March 2027; results from before 1 January 2025 are not accepted. Your name and date of birth must match your OUAC application.

| Test | Direct admission | English Boost Program, then degree |
| --- | --- | --- |
| IELTS Academic (centre or Online) | 6.5, no band below 6.0 | 5.5; reading and writing 5.5; others 5.0 |
| TOEFL iBT before 21 January 2026 | 83, no section below 20 | 69 |
| TOEFL iBT from 21 January 2026 | 4.5; listening 4.5; others 4.0 | 4.0 |
| Duolingo English Test | 115, subscores 100 | 100 |
| PTE Academic | 58, no section below 56 | 39 |

You may not need a test if you spent four full-time years at an English-medium secondary school, completed two years at an Ontario college or a year at a university that teaches in English.

## Fall 2027 dates {#section-5}

| Date | Deadline |
| --- | --- |
| Late September 2026 | OUAC applications open |
| 15 January 2027 | OUAC application for equal consideration; Ivey AEO application |
| 1 February 2027 | Music audition and interview registration |
| 15 February 2027 | Studio Arts portfolio |
| 28 February 2027 | School for Advanced Studies in Arts and Humanities application |
| 1 March 2027 | Aviation supplementary form; early deadline for Scholarship of Excellence consideration for non-Ontario applicants |
| March 2027 | Last English test and Casper dates |

## Tuition and fees in 2026/27 {#section-6}

International undergraduate fees for September 2026 to April 2027 at a load of 4.0 courses or more. They come from Western's 2026/27 fee schedule, which on 1 October 2026 is still marked "DRAFT: fees may change without notice", so confirm the final amount on your Student Center account:

| Programme | Tuition | Total with fees and UHIP |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Arts & Humanities, Social Science, Science, Health Sciences, Media, Music, Kinesiology | $33,490 (CAD 47,493) | about $35,590 (CAD 50,467–50,517) |
| Computer Science (years 1–3) | $38,900 (CAD 55,167) | $41,010 (CAD 58,166) |
| Management & Organizational Studies | $42,380 (CAD 60,105) | $44,490 (CAD 63,104) |
| Nursing | $42,160 (CAD 59,798) | $44,300 (CAD 62,822) |
| Engineering | $45,340 (CAD 64,310) | $47,510 (CAD 67,384) |
| Business (Ivey HBA) | $49,380 (CAD 70,040) | $51,620 (CAD 73,214) |

The total includes student organisation and university ancillary fees, the transit pass and UHIP health insurance (CAD 792 a year). New students also pay CAD 50 for the Western One Card.

Since September 2021, international undergraduate tuition rises by no more than 4% a year after first year. Over four years, a standard Arts or Science degree costs roughly $133,000–141,000 (CAD 189,000–201,000) in tuition alone: the lower figure assumes no increases, the higher one a 4% rise each year. Future rates are approved by the Board of Governors.

## Scholarships for international students {#section-7}

Admission scholarships (automatic). Students entering the main campus directly from high school are considered automatically; non-Ontario applicants are assured consideration for the Scholarship of Excellence if their application and all documents arrive by 1 March.

| Scholarship | Value | Condition |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Western Scholarship of Excellence | $5,640 (CAD 8,000): CAD 6,000 in first year plus CAD 2,000 for study abroad | 250 awards for top averages; international recipients may add a CAD 2,000 travel grant |
| Western Scholarship of Distinction | $2,470 (CAD 3,500) | final average 92–100% |
| Western Admission Scholarship | $1,760 (CAD 2,500) | final average 90–91.9% |

International President's Entrance Scholarships. Three awards of $70,510 (CAD 100,000) within the National Scholarship Program. A school nomination is required (each school may nominate one additional international student), and the online application is due by 14 February 2027; it opens by mid-November 2026. See [scholarships in Canada](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-scholarships-in-canada).

## Residence {#section-8}

Students entering first year directly from high school who receive an offer by mid-May receive an automatic residence offer. The price is the room plus a mandatory meal plan (CAD 7,700 or 8,300).

| Style | Room, 2026/27 | With meal plan |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Traditional (Delaware, Medway-Sydenham, Saugeen-Maitland) | CAD 8,900–11,280 | $11,700–13,810 (CAD 16,600–19,580) |
| Hybrid (Bayfield, Clare, Ontario, Perth) | CAD 10,860–13,170 | $13,090–15,140 (CAD 18,560–21,470) |
| Suite (Alumni House, Elgin, Essex, Lambton, London) | CAD 11,160–13,620 | $13,300–15,460 (CAD 18,860–21,920) |

Western estimates off-campus rent at CAD 6,000–16,000 for eight months, before food.

## Study permit and the Ontario PAL {#section-9}

Western undergraduates need an Ontario PAL (Ontario's 2026 target for PAL-required study permits is 70,074). Master's and PhD students at public institutions are exempt for applications from 1 January 2026. IRCC requires first-year tuition, travel and $16,530 (CAD 23,448) in living costs from 1 September 2026; the study permit fee is $110 (CAD 150) and biometrics $60 (CAD 85). Since 28 January 2026, Canadian visa application centres in Russia no longer accept passports, so Russian applicants submit their passport at a centre abroad, such as Yerevan, Almaty or Astana. Students may work off campus up to 24 hours a week during terms. See the [Canadian study permit](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-canada-study-permit) and [working while studying and the PGWP](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-working-while-studying-and-pgwp-canada).

## Master's and MBA {#section-10}

Graduate admission is run by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, with requirements set by each programme. Ivey's MBA costs $96,110 (CAD 136,310) for international students in 2026/27 and the MSc in Management $66,120 (CAD 93,770). See [master's degrees in Canada](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-masters-in-canada).

## Plan for Fall 2027 {#section-11}

1. September–October 2026: choose a programme, check prerequisites, decide on Ivey AEO.
2. October–December 2026: take the English test, translate documents, book Casper for Engineering.
3. By 15 January 2027: apply on OUAC and, if relevant, submit the AEO application.
4. January–March 2027: upload documents in Student Center and supplementary materials.
5. Spring 2027: accept the offer, receive the PAL, apply for the study permit.
6. Summer 2027: send final documents through WES and confirm residence.

## Common mistakes {#section-12}

- Leaving Casper too late. Engineering cannot make an offer without it.
- Using an old test. Results from before 1 January 2025 are not accepted for 2027 entry.
- Waiting for official documents before applying. Upload copies first; official records follow through WES.
- Expecting to start the HBA in first year. Ivey begins in year three; from school you can only obtain AEO status.
- A name mismatch between the test and OUAC. Scores will not match your file.

## FAQ {#section-13}

### Are Western University and the University of Western Ontario the same?

Yes. The university has used the Western University brand since 2012; its legal name remains The University of Western Ontario. It is in London, Ontario, not in the United Kingdom.

### Can I enter Western directly after Russian high school?

Yes. Western accepts the certificate of general secondary education without a foundation year, provided you have the programme's prerequisites and at least the equivalent of a Canadian B average. Competitive programmes expect more.

### How much does Western cost international students?

In 2026/27, CAD 47,493 ($33,490) a year for standard programmes, CAD 55,167 for Computer Science, CAD 64,310 for Engineering and CAD 70,040 for the Ivey HBA. Fees and insurance add about CAD 3,000, and increases after first year are capped at 4%.

### How do I get into Ivey from high school?

Apply on OUAC to any Western or affiliated-college programme, tick Ivey AEO and submit the separate AEO application with essays by 15 January. AEO status gives a conditional HBA place in year three if you meet the grade requirements in your first two years.

### Will an international student get a residence place?

Yes, for students entering first year directly from high school with an offer by mid-May. The residence offer is automatic; room and meal plan cost CAD 16,600–21,920 for the academic year.

### How much money do I need for the study permit?

First-year tuition, return travel and CAD 23,448 ($16,530) for one person when applying from 1 September 2026. Undergraduates also need an Ontario PAL, issued after admission.

### How does StudyU help with Western?

Programme and college selection, the OUAC and AEO applications, document translation, test registration and the study permit file are provided under an agreement with StudyU. Western (and Ivey for AEO) decides on admission, Ontario issues the PAL and IRCC decides on the study permit.
