# University College Cork (UCC): Admission, Fees and Life in Cork

University College Cork admits international school leavers straight into year one when their national exam results meet its published bands. For Russian applicants that means the school certificate plus the Unified State Exam (USE/EGE): the least competitive programmes need a 60% average across Russian, mathematics and the best other exam, and the most competitive need 95% in Russian and maths. Applicants from outside the EU apply directly to UCC through the UCCApply portal for €50 (about $60) and can list two programmes; in the 2026 cycle the window ran from 1 December to 31 May, but several popular degrees closed weeks earlier. UCC has already published its 2027/28 fees: $22,200 (€19,514) a year for arts programmes up to $32,220 (€28,314) for engineering and computer science, including the compulsory capitation fee. Non-EU undergraduates in arts, business and law, and science and engineering also receive an automatic $2,280 (€2,000) reduction for each year of study once they accept their offer.

## Who UCC suits {#section-1}

UCC is a large research university with the full spread of disciplines: arts and social sciences, business and law, medicine and the health professions, natural sciences, engineering and food science. It suits students who want a strong Irish university outside Dublin and are prepared to sort out housing early. The university has climbed the QS ranking four years running, and its 220th place in the 2027 edition is, according to UCC, its best position in thirteen years.

Three features shape most applications:

- Russian applicants are assessed differently here than at other Irish universities. The average must include Russian and mathematics, and the third exam is the best of your other subjects. For programmes that ask for a laboratory science (chemistry, biology or physics), that science has to be the one counted.
- Computer science sits in the most accessible band. Computer Science (CK401) is a Band 3 programme, so the formal floor is 60%, yet in 2026 it stopped taking applications on 8 May, earlier than the general deadline.
- Medicine and dentistry cannot be applied for directly. International candidates go through agents appointed by the university.

UCC is a weaker fit if you need to be in Dublin, or if you have only a school certificate without USE results and do not want a foundation year. ## Entry requirements for Russian school leavers {#section-2}

UCC accepts the Russian certificate of secondary general education together with USE results. The minimum depends on the competitiveness band of the programme.

Points that change the picture:

- Bands are floors, not offers. UCC says plainly that many programmes ask for more when demand is high and that meeting the minimum is only one condition.
- Check both documents before applying for 2027. The Russia requirements page was last revised in March 2024 and the band list covers 2026–2027; programmes can move between bands.
- Extra selection steps. Music (CK104) has an entrance test that can be taken online; Drama and Theatre Studies (CK112) has a workshop and interview; Applied Psychology (CK120) and Pharmacy (CK703) interview shortlisted candidates online. Social Work and Youth and Community Work are open only to applicants aged 23 or over on 1 January of the entry year.
- Minimum age. Full-time undergraduates are normally expected to be 17 by 15 January of the academic year; exceptions require a separate application to the university president.

Without the USE, or below the bands, UCC accepts the school certificate plus a recognised foundation programme. Partners include Griffith College in Cork, OnCampus Ireland in Maynooth, DCU International Academy and Dublin International Foundation College in Dublin, and NCUK. ## How to apply for an undergraduate degree {#section-3}

Non-EU school leavers do not use the CAO. They apply to UCC's international office through UCCApply.

UCC will post the 2027 dates on the same page. Until then, treat last year's calendar as the baseline and plan to submit between December and February.

Step by step:

1. Confirm whether you are EU or non-EU for fee purposes. UCC sorts every applicant into one of the two categories, and both the procedure and the fee depend on it.
2. Apply in UCCApply. The fee is €50 and covers up to two programmes.
3. Upload the checklist documents: school certificate, USE certificate, translations, English test result and references. A teacher can email a confidential reference directly to admissions, quoting your application number.
4. Wait for the decision. The international office screens the file and passes it to the academic department; places go in the order complete applications arrive.
5. Accept the offer and pay the non-refundable deposit stated in your offer letter. Irish immigration accepts TransferMate and UCCApply receipts as proof of fee payment for the visa.
6. Send UCC your visa application number through its dedicated form as soon as you have applied.

Medicine and dentistry. Only designated agents accept these applications, each with its own deadline; for countries without a named agent, UCC points to the IUMC office. Plan this route a full year ahead.

## English language requirements {#section-4}

UCC counts scores from one sitting only, so you cannot combine the best bands from different attempts. The result must be no more than two years old when your course starts.

Speech and Language Therapy asks for IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.5. Health programmes accept only IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, Cambridge and PTE. For postgraduate study the standard is IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, rising to 7.0 with 6.5 minimums on some programmes, and UCC accepts the IELTS One Skill Retake at that level.

## Tuition fees: 2026/27 and the published 2027/28 rates {#section-5}

UCC publishes fees two years ahead. If you are starting in September 2027, the right-hand column is the one to budget with: it already includes the capitation fee.

Budget details worth knowing:

- Dentistry adds a clinical equipment charge in years three to five: $1,710 (€1,500), $1,710 (€1,500) and $1,140 (€1,000).
- Pharmacy students who pay their own fees can receive a $5,690 (€5,000) academic scholarship each year.
- Annual increases. Rates are reviewed every year, and scholarships are deducted from the fee published for that year. On most programmes the 2027/28 rate is about 4% above 2026/27; for dentistry the rise is about 5.5%.
- Instalments. First-year students pay as set out in the offer letter; from year two, international students can pay in two instalments.
- Sponsors. Students funded by a government or by a loan from a recognised body can submit the sponsor's letter instead of paying upfront.

## Scholarships: automatic awards and what is closed to Russian citizens {#section-6}

UCC does not offer large full scholarships for international undergraduates. What it does offer is a set of predictable automatic awards that need no separate application.

| SEFS and Business and Law merit awards | taught master's applicants with the equivalent of an Irish First Class Honours (1H) | 20% off the fee, applied automatically with the offer |

UCC scholarships generally cannot be combined, and you must accept your offer in UCCApply for an award to be applied.

The government's GOI-IES scholarship for master's and PhD study is not open to citizens of Russia or Belarus, and UCC's schemes for Chinese (CSC) and US applicants are restricted to those nationalities. ## Master's and PhD study {#section-7}

Academic entry. UCC looks for a degree equivalent to an Irish honours bachelor's with results at First Class Honours or Second Class Honours Grade 1 (2:1), depending on the programme. Each file is assessed individually.

Applying. Taught master's and higher diplomas are also applied for in UCCApply, with a non-refundable €50 fee. Two rules applicants often miss:

- A conditional offer is not enough for a visa. You must meet every condition and hold a full offer first.
- Deferral needs a deposit. To start a year later you have to accept the offer, meet its conditions and pay the deposit; otherwise you reapply from scratch.

PhD students approved for four years pay a reduced continuation fee of $1,930 (€1,700) a year from year five. A one-year taught master's is at level 9 of the Irish framework and leads to up to 24 months of Stamp 1G. ## Housing and living costs in Cork {#section-8}

UCC's international office warns openly about Ireland's housing and cost-of-living crisis and advises starting the search in the January before you arrive.

UCC Campus Accommodation. Rooms are allocated by lottery. The application window runs from mid-February to mid-March, entry is free and offers go out in early April; a refundable deposit secures the room. After accepting your study offer you can also register with the Office of Accommodation and Community Life, but that does not guarantee a place.

Private student residences open bookings from January and often allow later cancellation; check each operator's terms.

Renting a room in a shared house. Student-heavy areas include College Road, Magazine Road, Glasheen, Barrack Street and Wilton; Ballincollig, Douglas and Carrigaline are further out but have frequent buses. UCC runs its own listings site, UCC Studentpad.

UCC's international office publishes this monthly estimate:

The immigration service asks visa-required students to show at least $11,380 (€10,000) for the year. UCC's own figures show that real costs in Cork with housing are higher, so plan with the table above rather than the visa minimum.

## Visa, work rights and Stamp 1G {#section-9}

Citizens of Russia and other visa-required countries need a long-stay study (D) visa. You complete the AVATS online form and lodge documents at the VFS Global visa centre; the Embassy of Ireland in Moscow no longer accepts applications directly, and VFS also serves applicants from Belarus, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The visa fee is $70 (€60), plus the VFS service charge. Citizens of countries that do not need a visa to enter Ireland skip this step but register in the same way after arrival.

The Irish immigration service (ISD) requires you to:

- pay tuition before applying: the full course fee if it is under €6,000, otherwise at least $6,830 (€6,000);
- show access to $11,380 (€10,000) for the first year, and the same amount for each later year on top of fees;
- prove your English and hold private medical insurance.

Within 90 days of arrival you register your Stamp 2 permission and receive an IRP card, which costs $340 (€300). Students may work up to 20 hours a week during term and up to 40 hours from June to September and from 15 December to 15 January. After graduation, the Third Level Graduate Programme grants Stamp 1G: 12 months after a level 8 honours degree, and 12 months renewable for a further 12 after a level 9 qualification or higher. In that time you need to find a job and move to a Critical Skills or General Employment Permit. Those decisions belong to ISD and the Department of Enterprise, not to UCC. ## Mistakes that cost places or money {#section-11}

- Averaging your specialist exams without Russian. At UCC the Russian language exam is always part of the calculation.
- Waiting for 31 May. Computer Science and Data Science closed on 8 May 2026, and Pharmacy on 1 March.
- Combining IELTS bands from two sittings. Undergraduate admissions accept one sitting only.
- Applying for a visa with a conditional master's offer. UCC states that such an offer will not support a visa.
- Looking for housing after the visa arrives. The UCC lottery runs in February and March, and private residences take bookings from January.
- Budgeting with the 2026/27 rate. September 2027 entrants pay the higher 2027/28 fee.
- Using an unapproved intermediary for medicine. Only UCC's designated agents can submit these applications.

## FAQ {#section-12}

### Can I enter UCC after Russian school without a foundation year?

Yes, if you have USE results. Band 3 programmes need a 60% average across Russian, maths and your best other exam, plus at least a grade 3 in one certificate subject. Without the USE you will need a recognised foundation programme.

### What does a year at UCC cost an international student in 2027/28?

Tuition including capitation runs from €19,514 ($22,200) for arts to €28,314 ($32,220) for computer science and engineering, and €54,414 ($61,910) for medicine. UCC estimates living costs in Cork, including rent, at €1,181–2,923 a month.

### Which UCC scholarships are automatic?

Non-EU undergraduates in three colleges (arts and social sciences, business and law, and science, engineering and food science) receive €2,000 for each year of study with no separate application; accepting the offer is enough. Business and science master's applicants with a First Class Honours equivalent get 20% off automatically.

### When should I apply for September 2027?

UCC will publish the 2027 dates separately. In the last cycle applications opened on 1 December and closed on 31 May, but popular programmes shut in early May, so a winter application is the safer plan.

### Do I need IELTS or TOEFL if I studied English at an advanced level at school?

Yes. The Russian certificate and USE are not on UCC's list of accepted English evidence; IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, PTE, LanguageCert, the Oxford Test of English and the other listed tests are.

### Can I apply to UCC medicine directly?

No. International applicants apply for medicine and dentistry only through UCC's designated agents, each with its own deadline. The 2027/28 medicine fee is €54,414 a year.

### How does a Russian citizen get a visa to study in Cork?

Apply for a D study visa: fill in AVATS, lodge documents at VFS Global, and show proof of tuition payment plus €10,000 for living costs. After arrival, register for Stamp 2 and pay €300 for the IRP card.
