# Graz University of Technology (TU Graz)

Graz University of Technology (TU Graz), founded in 1811, shares 409th place in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Non-EU students pay $825 (€726.72) per semester plus the $30 (€26.20) ÖH student union fee. All 20 bachelor's programmes are taught in German (C1 required), while 23 of its 37 master's programmes are taught in English. Sixteen of those English-taught master's, including Computer Science and Data Science, are selective: registration for 2027/28 runs from 15 October to 15 December 2026.

## Who TU Graz suits {#section-1}

TU Graz is a focused engineering and science university with strong industry ties: it takes part in all five of Austria's K2 competence centres, where research is run jointly with companies, and hosts 16 Christian Doppler laboratories. In the QS subject rankings 2026 it does best in architecture (101–150), mechanical engineering and materials science (201–250) and civil engineering (201–275); THE 2026 places its computer science at 176–200.

## Faculties and programmes {#section-2}

TU Graz has seven faculties: Architecture; Civil Engineering Sciences; Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering; Electrical and Information Engineering; Mathematics, Physics and Geodesy; Mechanical Engineering and Economic Sciences; Technical Chemistry, Chemical and Process Engineering and Biotechnology.

Science programmes are partly run with the University of Graz under the NAWI Graz label — 6 of the 20 bachelor's and 16 of the 37 master's. These degrees are awarded by both universities, and students use the facilities of both.

German-taught master's include Architecture, Mechanical Engineering (also with Business Economics), Civil Engineering Sciences and Structural Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Audio Engineering, Geodesy and several NAWI Graz programmes such as Molecular Microbiology, Plant Sciences and Space Sciences and Earth from Space. There is also an extension programme in Artificial Intelligence Engineering for students taking or holding a master's.

### Bachelor's programmes

All bachelor's programmes are in German, including Computer Science, Software Engineering and Management, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Architecture, Molecular Biology and Acoustics, Music, and Information Engineering have an admission procedure. Computer Science, Software Engineering and Management, Information and Computer Engineering, Chemical and Process Engineering and the acoustics programme also require B2 English.

Doctoral training takes place in 14 doctoral schools, all taught in English.

## Applying for an English-taught master's {#section-3}

There are two routes; check which applies to your programme.

### Selective programmes

Selection runs once a year for the following academic year. Using Computer Science for 2027/28 as the example:

1. 15 October – 15 December 2026. Create a TUGRAZonline basic account, apply for one programme (you cannot switch later) and upload PDFs: photo, CV, motivation letter, the completed-courses form, transcript, bachelor's curriculum and passport. If you have not graduated yet, a transcript of completed semesters is enough. No certification is needed at this stage, and nothing is posted.
2. By 1 March 2027. A committee awards up to 25 points: up to 5 for the motivation letter and up to 20 for subject-specific competences. Fewer than 14 points or an unrelated degree means rejection. Computer Science has 50 places for 2027/28.
3. After you are offered a place. Upload your degree certificate, C1 English proof and the certifications required for your country, then enrol and apply for your residence permit. You can start in winter 2027/28 or the following summer semester.

### Programmes without selection

1. Check the degree requirements on the programme page.
2. Prepare PDFs: application form, bachelor's certificate, transcript, English certificate (German for German-taught programmes), passport and photo.
3. Apply online in TUGRAZonline and note your application number.
4. Print the form with that number and post the complete application with original documents to TU Graz Studienservice, Rechbauerstraße 12, 8010 Graz, within the same deadline. The application is complete only when both parts have arrived.
5. Wait for a written decision; processing takes weeks, and receipt of post is not confirmed.

Non-EU deadlines: 1 May – 15 August for winter and 1 December – 15 January for summer.

## Applying for a bachelor's after secondary school {#section-4}

1. Post your application. Send the Application for Admission form and all documents in the original to the Registrar's Office within the deadline (1 May – 15 August for winter, 1 December – 15 January for summer). Emailed applications are not considered.
2. Rector's decision. You receive admission, conditional admission with supplementary exams and/or German at the VGUH preparatory programme, or rejection.
3. Supplementary exams (Ergänzungsprüfungen). If your certificate is not equivalent to the Austrian Matura, TU Graz assigns exams such as mathematics, physics and chemistry, decided case by case. Unfinished university studies do not replace them.
4. VGUH. With your admission letter you register in person at VGUH and are enrolled as a non-degree student. After passing the exams within the deadline in your letter, you send the certificates to TU Graz and move into the degree programme.
5. Enrolment in person. Final enrolment takes place at the Registrar's Office during the admission period (for winter 2026/27, bachelor's without admission procedure: 6 July – 5 September 2026), by appointment.

A degree you have already completed by the time you apply can replace the supplementary exams.

## Language requirements {#section-5}

German C1 is required for every German-taught programme. TU Graz accepts ÖSD, Goethe, DSH, DSD, telc C1 or telc C1 Hochschule, TestDaF with TDN 4 in all four parts, and a C1 exam from an Austrian preparatory programme — no older than two years, with all four skills at C1. Without C1 you can apply with an A2 certificate (ÖSD, Goethe, telc, ÖIF, DTÖ, TestDaF and others, no older than two years) and will be admitted conditionally to take the German exam at VGUH. A2 cannot be obtained at VGUH or at the university.

English C1 for master's: TOEFL iBT 95, IELTS Academic 7.0, Cambridge C1 Advanced 180 (grade C), C2 Proficiency, telc English C1 or PTE Academic 76, no older than two years at the time of application. For selective programmes you can submit it after receiving a place. A degree of at least two years taught in English in the EU/EEA, Switzerland, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore or South Africa also counts; English-taught degrees from other countries do not.

English B2 for some bachelor's: TOEFL iBT 72, IELTS 5.5, Cambridge C1 Advanced 160, telc English B2 or PTE 59, valid for five years. Without it, your admission letter will require the English exam at VGUH before you start.

EU/EEA citizens have later master's deadlines (15 October and 15 March), so do not use them by mistake. TU Graz warns that processing can take months and you may not be admitted in the desired semester — apply early in the window.

## Costs {#section-7}

Students enrolled only in the preparatory programme pay no tuition fee, as TU Graz states on its fees page. Holders of other residence permits (EU long-term residence, family member permit, Red-White-Red Card and similar) can be exempted from the $825 (€726.72) fee by submitting proof during the admission period. TU Graz says it does not offer full scholarships.

### Living costs and proof of funds

According to the 2025 Austrian Student Social Survey quoted by TU Graz, students spend about $1,480 (€1,300) a month on average: $565 (€497) on housing, $310 (€273) on food, $93 (€82) on transport, $125 (€109) on leisure, $76 (€67) on study costs and $300 (€265) on other items. For a student residence permit in 2026 you must prove $820 (€722.58) a month if you are under 24, or $1,490 (€1,308.39) from age 24, for 12 months in advance. Add student health insurance with ÖGK at $90 (€78.84) a month and a $250 (€218) permit fee.

From age 24 the total rises to about $20,882. If your rent exceeds $440 (€386.43) a month, the amount you must prove increases by the difference.

## Where to live {#section-8}

Halls in Graz are run by student associations and private operators, not by the university. OeAD Housing describes its Steyrergasse guesthouse as near TU Graz, with rooms from $455 (€400) a month as listed in September 2026; Greenbox TU on Münzgrabenstraße and WIST residences on Moserhofgasse and Münzgrabenstraße are in the same area. The University of Graz publishes the full list of halls for the city. Apply for housing at the same time as for your programme, because the residence authority requires a housing contract of at least three months.

## Residence permit: what matters for TU Graz applicants {#section-9}

Stays longer than six months require the "Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Student" permit, lodged in person at the Austrian embassy or consulate responsible for your place of residence — not at a visa centre. The Graz authorities decide within up to 90 days, extendable by another 90 if documents are requested. Selective programmes give you an advantage here: results arrive in March, leaving time before October. If you apply to a non-selective programme in August, the risk of missing the semester start is higher. Renewal requires at least 16 ECTS per academic year. Practical notes: under Austrian law, only the applicant — or a person authorised to represent parties professionally in Austria — may submit an application, and TU Graz rejects applications made through agencies. Post apostilled originals by tracked mail well before the deadline. Fees are paid to an Austrian account, so arrange a legal payment route from your country before enrolment.

## Mistakes to avoid {#section-11}

- Using EU deadlines. For non-EU applicants, non-selective master's close on 15 August, not 15 October.
- Waiting for your degree before registering for selection. A transcript of completed semesters is enough, and registration closes on 15 December.
- Sending only the online part. For bachelor's and non-selective master's, the application is incomplete without the posted originals.
- Taking IELTS too early. TU Graz accepts C1 certificates no older than two years at the time of application.
- Applying to a programme "just to try". You cannot switch programmes in the selection round, and the motivation letter is worth up to 5 of 25 points.

## FAQ {#section-12}

### How much does TU Graz cost for non-EU students?

$825 (€726.72) per semester plus the $30 (€26.20) ÖH fee — about $1,710 (€1,505.84) a year at any level. While enrolled only at VGUH, you pay the $570 (€500) programme fee plus ÖH and no tuition.

### Does TU Graz teach in English?

Yes, at master's level: 23 of 37 programmes, including Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering and Management, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Physics. All bachelor's programmes are in German; doctoral schools are in English.

### How does the Computer Science selection work?

Register and upload documents between 15 October and 15 December 2026 for 2027/28. The committee scores the motivation letter (up to 5 points) and subject competences (up to 20); the threshold is 14 points. Results come by 1 March 2027, and there are 50 places.

### What IELTS score do I need?

At least 7.0 overall (or TOEFL iBT 95, PTE 76), no older than two years. For selective programmes you can submit it after being offered a place.

### Can I apply after 11 years of school?

Yes, for a German-taught bachelor's, but expect supplementary exams (for example maths, physics and chemistry) and German at VGUH. You can apply with A2 German; full enrolment follows once you have C1 and have passed the exams.

### Does TU Graz offer scholarships?

It does not offer full scholarships. There are some merit and industry-funded scholarships, but they should not be your plan for covering tuition and living costs.
