# The University of Sheffield: Admission for International Students

The University of Sheffield is a Russell Group research university in the north of England, ranked joint 82nd in the QS World University Rankings 2027, joint 108th in THE 2026 and in the 151–200 band of ARWU 2026. Russian and Kazakh school certificates are not on its list of qualifications for direct entry, so the route after 11 years of school is an International Foundation Year at the University of Sheffield International College: Russian applicants need an Attestat average of 4 and IELTS for UKVI 5.0. International undergraduate fees for 2026/27 were $33,050 (£25,000) for humanities and social sciences and $42,430 (£32,100) for engineering and science; 2027 fees are not yet confirmed, but the fee is fixed for the whole course. Self-funded international undergraduates who make Sheffield their firm or insurance choice automatically receive $3,300 (£2,500) off each year (medicine and dentistry excluded).

Sheffield is a practical choice for students who want a Russell Group university with accessible entry after 11 years of school, fixed fees and a wide choice of engineering courses. ## Faculties and subjects {#section-2}

The University has five faculties:

- Engineering: mechanical, aerospace, civil, chemical, electronic and electrical engineering, materials science, computer science, bioengineering.
- Science: mathematics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, biosciences, psychology.
- Health: medicine, dentistry, nursing, allied health professions.
- Social Sciences: economics, law, management, politics, sociology, journalism, geography, architecture and planning, information science.
- Arts and Humanities: history, English, philosophy, languages, music, archaeology.

The University reports six Nobel Prize winners and 92% of its research rated in the top two categories of the last national assessment. THE 2026 ranked it 46th in the world for international outlook.

## Undergraduate entry with a Russian, Kazakh or Uzbek school certificate {#section-3}

### Why you need a foundation

Sheffield publishes a list of international qualifications accepted for Year 1. The Russian and Kazakh school certificates are not on it, so the University directs these applicants to the International Foundation Year at its International College. Alternatives are A-levels, the IB or an NCUK foundation. After a successful foundation you progress to Year 1 based on your results.

School grades by country:

- Russia: Certificate of Secondary Education (grade 11) with an average of 4.
- Kazakhstan: Certificate of Completed Education with grades of 3 or 4 in relevant subjects.
- Uzbekistan: the College's table gives no separate foundation requirement; it lists Uzbekistan only for International Year One (Attestat of 4.0 plus a year of further study). Ask the College admissions team.

Students must be at least 17 at the start, and some degrees require students to be 18 when they progress to the University. For each degree the College sets an overall progression mark and minimum module grades, provided at the start of the course. If your English is not yet high enough, the College offers English preparation first: one term on campus costs $7,600 (£5,750), and a seven-week online course $4,630 (£3,500).

After an offer the College asks for a confirmation payment: a $1,320 (£1,000) security deposit, returned at the end of the programme minus any damages, and a non-refundable $340 (£260) administration fee. Before it issues a CAS you pay a further $7,930 (£6,000) of tuition in advance, $9,600 (£7,260) in total; for some countries the advance is higher, and the exact schedule comes with your offer. The rest of the first-semester fee is due 28 days before the start, and the second-semester balance two months before that semester begins.

The College also offers International Year One, which counts as Year 1, in business management and accounting, economics and psychology ($30,080–31,590 [£22,750–23,900]). Russian applicants need an Attestat average of 4.0 plus a year of further study and IELTS for UKVI 5.5 (at least 5.5 in writing and 5.0 in the other skills); the further year can be, for example, the first year at a Russian university. The minimum for undergraduate study is IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each component, and many departments ask for more. The Medical School does not accept every English qualification, so check its list separately.

### Step-by-step plan

1. Autumn 2026. Choose a foundation route, business and humanities or science and engineering, since it determines which degrees you can progress to.
2. Autumn–winter 2026. Take IELTS for UKVI in person; 5.0 with at least 5.0 in writing is enough for the September foundation.
3. Several months before your start date. Apply to the College, receive an offer, make the $1,660 (£1,260) confirmation payment and, before the CAS, the $7,930 (£6,000) advance.
4. Spring–summer 2027. Book University accommodation before the published deadline and receive your CAS for the Student visa.
5. During the foundation. Achieve the progression mark and accept your Year 1 offer; for the scholarship, Sheffield must be your firm or insurance choice.

## Master's and PhD admission {#section-4}

Most master's courses require a UK 2:1 or equivalent, and some consider a 2:2. How a Russian or Kazakh grade converts depends on your university and the course. The minimum English requirement is IELTS 6.5 with no component below 6.0. If your grades fall short, the International College offers Pre-Masters programmes: Russian and Kazakh applicants need a bachelor's degree with a minimum grade of 3, and the 2026/27 fee is $29,750–36,360 (£22,500–27,500).

Sheffield's 2027 international postgraduate scholarships ($3,970 [£3,000] or $9,250 [£7,000]) target students from mainland China and selected countries that do not include Russia, Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan. PhD applicants apply through the department with a research proposal.

2027/28 fees have not been confirmed, and the University advises using 2026/27 as a guide. International students have a fixed-fee guarantee: the first-year fee stays the same for the whole course unless you change programme. ## Accommodation {#section-6}

The University offers a room in its accommodation to all full-time, full-year students who apply before the deadline (3 September 2026 for the 2026 intake). If Sheffield is your firm choice you can apply from March, and this offer also covers Clearing and insurance-choice students.

Rent includes utilities, contents insurance, internet and Residence Life events. All contracts are self-catered; undergraduate contracts run for 42 weeks (20 September 2026 to 11 July 2027). Many students move to private housing from Year 2; the University's Smart Move Sheffield service lists properties inspected by Sheffield City Council. ## Living costs {#section-7}

The University quotes average monthly student spending from Save the Student, excluding rent: groceries $200 (£155), transport $100 (£73), going out $80 (£60), takeaways and eating out $60 (£45), clothes $40 (£33), phone $20 (£15) and subscriptions $20 (£14), about $520 (£395) in total. Adding these for 42 weeks to hall rent gives, by our calculation, about $15,100–15,900 (£11,400–12,000) for the first academic year.

The visa check on living funds is separate: $1,550 (£1,171) for each month of study, capped at nine months ($13,930 [£10,539]), plus the balance of first-year tuition, held for 28 consecutive days. ## Scholarships {#section-8}

- International Undergraduate Scholarship 2027. $3,300 (£2,500) for each year of the degree, up to $13,220 (£10,000) for a four-year programme. There is no application: start your degree in September 2027, be self-funded and make Sheffield your firm or insurance choice by 2 June 2027. From Year 2 you keep it with an average of 60% or more. It excludes medicine and dentistry and cannot be combined with other University discounts or sponsorship.
- International College students. Foundation students progressing to the University in September 2027 receive the same $3,300 (£2,500) a year automatically.
- Partner scholarships. Graduates of certain schools and programmes (NCUK, SABIS, GEMS and others) have separate schemes.
- Chevening (master's). A Russian citizen can take part in the 2027/28 cycle only while living abroad; applications close on 6 October 2026, 11:00 UTC.

## Visa and work after graduation {#section-9}

You need a CAS from the University or the College for the Student visa. The visa fee is $740 (£558) and the Immigration Health Surcharge $1,030 (£776) per year of leave. You can apply up to six months before the course starts; UK Visas and Immigration makes the decision. A standalone foundation requires English proof through a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI. Graduates can apply for the Graduate visa, which lasts 18 months for applications made on or after 1 January 2027. ## Sheffield's strengths and weaknesses for applicants from Russia and Central Asia {#section-10}

What helps:

- accessible entry after school: an average of 4 and IELTS for UKVI 5.0;
- four foundation start dates, including March if you miss the autumn;
- an automatic $3,300 (£2,500) a year discount with no competition or essay;
- fees fixed for the whole degree;
- University accommodation for on-time applicants, with all bills included in the rent.

What makes it harder:

- no entry without a foundation, A-levels or the IB;
- the College publishes no separate foundation requirement for Uzbek school leavers;
- 2027 fees are not yet confirmed;
- the 2027 postgraduate regional scholarships are not open to the region;
- the College expects about $9,600 (£7,260) before it issues a CAS, and more for some countries.

## Mistakes to avoid {#section-11}

- Applying to Year 1 with only a school certificate. Russian and Kazakh certificates are not accepted for direct entry.
- Confusing Sheffield with Sheffield Hallam. They are different universities.
- Taking standard IELTS Academic for the foundation. You need IELTS for UKVI or another SELT.
- Not making Sheffield your firm or insurance choice by 2 June. Otherwise the automatic $3,300 (£2,500) discount does not apply.
- Choosing a foundation route without checking the target degree. The business route does not lead to engineering, and vice versa.
- Missing the accommodation deadline. The guarantee applies only before it.

## Checklist before applying {#section-12}

- An Attestat average of at least 4 (Russia) or grades of 3–4 in relevant subjects (Kazakhstan).
- A foundation route chosen with a clear target degree.
- IELTS for UKVI taken in person: 5.0 for the two-semester foundation, 6.0 for the 1.5-semester one.
- A budget covering the foundation, three or four degree years with the $3,300 (£2,500) discount, and about $15,000 a year for living costs.
- Sheffield set as your firm or insurance UCAS choice by 2 June 2027.
- The accommodation application in your calendar.

### Can I enter the University of Sheffield after 11 years of school?

Not directly into Year 1. With a Russian Attestat averaging 4 and IELTS for UKVI 5.0 you can join the International Foundation Year at the International College and then progress to Year 1.

In 2026/27 undergraduate fees were $33,050 (£25,000) for humanities, social sciences and business and $42,430 (£32,100) for engineering and science. Medicine was $62,890 (£47,575). The automatic $3,300 (£2,500) annual scholarship reduces the cost for self-funded international students.
