# Pompeu Fabra University (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, UPF)

Pompeu Fabra University is a public university in Barcelona, founded in 1990, whose core fields are economics, law, political science, communication and biomedicine. In 2026/27 a first-year bachelor's place costs $7,720 (€6,800.32) for non-EU students who are not resident in Spain, against $1,370 (€1,202.32) for EU citizens and residents. Official master's degrees cost non-EU students $105 (€93.50) per credit, or $6,530 (€5,749.80) for 60 credits including administrative fees. Undergraduate places are allocated through Catalonia's central pre-registration (preinscripció), which ran from 2 to 26 June in 2026, and the June round is designed for applicants with passed entrance exams and a recognised school diploma; holding only a homologation receipt pushes you to the September round, at the back of the queue.

## Who UPF suits, and who should look elsewhere {#section-1}

| Strengths | Limitations |
| --- | --- |
| Several bachelor's degrees taught entirely in English, including International Business Economics and Global Studies | Non-EU students pay five to six times the EU fee |
| A separate Global Studies quota for school leavers from non-EU education systems | With only a homologation receipt (volant) you are limited to the September round, at the back of the queue |
| More than 20 master's programmes taught only in English | Almost no university-funded aid for new international students |
| All campuses inside Barcelona and easy to move between | Most standard bachelor's degrees are taught in Catalan and Spanish |
| Published cut-off marks make your chances easy to estimate | Popular degrees need 12+ out of 14 |

UPF makes sense if you want economics, business, law, politics, journalism, media or biomedical sciences at a regulated public price. If your budget is closer to $2,000–3,000 a year and you can study in Spanish, public universities in Andalusia and Castile and León cost far less — see our profiles of the [University of Granada](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-granada) and the [University of Salamanca](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-salamanca). To compare Barcelona options, read our guide to [universities in Barcelona](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-universities-in-barcelona) and the [University of Barcelona](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-barcelona) profile.

## Programmes and what you can study in English {#section-2}

UPF has seven faculties and a School of Engineering covering eight fields: health and life sciences, political and social sciences, communication, law, economics and business, engineering and ICT, humanities, and translation and language sciences.

### Bachelor's degrees

Most degrees last four years (240 ECTS). The official list for 2026/27 flags these English-taught options:

- International Business Economics — fully in English, 90 places, Ciutadella campus; B2 English is required, though no certificate is checked at admission;
- Global Studies — English for the first two years, 70 places, 30 of them reserved for applicants from non-EU education systems;
- Industrial Technologies and Economic Analysis — with the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC);
- Bioinformatics — an inter-university degree run by UPC, UB, UAB and UPF;
- Computer Engineering, Mathematical Engineering in Data Science, Telecommunication Network Engineering and Computational Audiovisual Engineering — each with a "100% in English" option;
- a double degree combining the King's College London Bachelor of Laws with the UPF law degree.

Other degrees — business administration, economics, law, journalism, medicine, political science, translation and more — are multilingual, usually with Catalan and Spanish in the early years and English-taught subjects later on.

### Master's degrees

UPF's official master's list includes more than 80 programmes, around twenty of them taught only in English. Examples include Brain and Cognition, Bioinformatics for Health Sciences, Biomedical Research, Computational Biomedical Engineering, Interactive Intelligent Systems, Sound and Music Computing, European and Global Law, Computer Vision and the Erasmus Mundus master in artificial intelligence (EMAI). Several affiliated institutions also recruit under the UPF name — Barcelona School of Economics (BSE), UPF Barcelona School of Management and ESCI‑UPF — and they set their own fees outside the public price table. Check which body awards the degree before you budget.

## How to get into a UPF bachelor's degree with a non-EU school diploma {#section-3}

A school diploma from outside the EU does not give direct access to a Spanish university. You need three things: homologation (formal recognition of your diploma as equivalent to the Spanish Bachillerato, with an average mark converted to the Spanish 5–10 scale), exam results that produce an admission score, and an application in Catalonia's single preinscripció. Homologation is decided by the Spanish Ministry of Education; applicants living in Catalonia apply through the Catalan education department.

### What you need for Catalonia's June round

The June preinscripció round is meant for applicants who hold final homologation and have passed an entrance exam: the PAU in Catalonia, the EBAU elsewhere in Spain, or the Specific Competence Tests (PCE) through UNEDasiss. If you have passed the exams but your homologation certificate has not arrived, you still apply in June; once the ministry decides, you upload the certificate and your exam results to the portal and notify the university access office (Oficina d'Accés a la Universitat). If everything arrives before the process closes, usually at the end of October, your score is calculated and a place is assigned according to it. The weakest position is holding only the provisional receipt (volant d'inscripció condicional): it limits you to the September round, where you are ranked last. If you finish school in the summer, apply for homologation six to nine months before June ([Catalan rules](https://universitats.gencat.cat/ca/acces-universitat/acces-segons-perfils-estudiants/estudiant-sistema-educatiu-estranger/)).

### How the score is calculated

For applicants from non-EU systems, Catalonia uses this formula:

1. The mean of four compulsory PCE exams — Spanish language and literature, a foreign language, history or history of philosophy, and one core subject — must be at least 4.
2. Access score = 0.4 × PCE mean + 0.6 × the diploma average on your homologation certificate; it must reach 5.
3. Admission score (maximum 14) = access score + the two best weighted results in optional subjects, weighted 0.1 or 0.2.

UPF cut-off marks in the first allocation of June 2026:

| Degree | Cut-off, out of 14 |
| --- | --- |
| Medicine | 12.534 |
| International Business Economics | 12.334 |
| Biomedical Engineering | 11.862 |
| Global Studies (general quota) | 11.714 |
| Law | 10.920 |
| Business Administration (ADE) | 10.906 |
| Economics | 10.722 |
| Computer Engineering | 9.900 |
| Global Studies (non-EU education systems quota) | 5.000 |

A 5.000 cut-off in the Global Studies quota means every eligible applicant got a place in the first allocation. That is not a promise for next year, but it is the one UPF degree where a non-EU school leaver does not compete head-on with Catalan applicants.

### Step-by-step plan for 2027/28

1. September–December 2026. Shortlist three to five degrees and note the PCE subject weights and last year's cut-off for each. Get an apostille on your diploma and transcript, then an official Spanish translation.
2. By the end of 2026. Apply for homologation to the Spanish Ministry of Education, online or through a consulate.
3. February–April 2027. Apply for UNEDasiss accreditation and register for the PCE. In 2026, registration for the May session ran from 16 March to 28 April, with exams in Spain on 25–29 May.
4. June 2027. Submit the preinscripció on the Generalitat portal, listing several degrees in order of preference; check the separate instructions for the Global Studies non-EU quota.
5. July–September 2027. Follow the allocation rounds (in 2026 the first was published on 10 July, followed by six more) and start your visa application.

Our guide to [applying to Spanish universities](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-applying-to-spanish-universities) explains the national route, and our article on [Spanish university after 11 years of school](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-spain-university-after-11-years-of-school) covers applicants from 11-year school systems.

## Deadlines for 2027/28 {#section-4}

Catalonia and UNEDasiss publish their 2027 calendars in spring. The 2026 dates below are a reliable guide; they usually move by a few days.

| Stage | 2026 dates | Set by |
| --- | --- | --- |
| UNEDasiss accreditation | 4 February – 1 December | UNEDasiss |
| PCE registration, May session | 16 March – 28 April | UNEDasiss |
| PCE exams in Spain | 25–29 May | UNEDasiss |
| Preinscripció, June round | 2–26 June | Generalitat de Catalunya |
| First allocation | 10 July | Generalitat de Catalunya |
| Preinscripció, September round | 16–17 September | Generalitat de Catalunya |
| Master's, rounds 1–5 | 14 November 2025 – 23 August 2026 | UPF |

## Language requirements: Catalan, Spanish and English {#section-5}

No Catalan certificate is required for admission, but Catalan is UPF's main working language and each group's language is listed in the course plan. On multilingual degrees, B2 Spanish is realistically the minimum even with strong English. Bachelor's students who started in 2018/19 or later must also prove a third language at B2 — English, German, French or Italian — before graduating, either with an external certificate or a UPF test.

For English-taught bachelor's degrees UPF recommends B2. Master's language rules are set programme by programme; many English-taught masters ask for C1 or for TOEFL and IELTS scores with minimum sub-scores, and Spanish-taught masters for B2–C1 Spanish.

## Master's admission at UPF {#section-6}

You do not need to homologate a bachelor's degree for a master's. UPF checks that your degree gives access to master's study in the issuing country, and graduates from outside the EU pay $250 (€218.15) for this check (applicants from Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland are exempt).

| Step | What matters |
| --- | --- |
| Choosing a round | For 2026/27: 14 Nov 2025–14 Jan 2026, 15 Jan–4 Mar, 5 Mar–27 Apr, 28 Apr–5 Jun, 1 Jul–23 Aug 2026. UPF strongly advises international applicants to use the first or second round; fifth-round decisions arrive on 7 September, too late for a visa |
| Application | $34 (€30.21) per programme, non-refundable; no limit on the number of programmes |
| Place reservation | $680 (€600) after admission, non-refundable and non-transferable, even if you have applied for a scholarship |
| Documents | degree certificate, transcript, CV, statement of purpose, passport, language certificates as required |
| Legalisation | not needed to apply; graduates of non-EU universities must legalise documents in the issuing country before enrolment in September |

## Tuition and living costs in Barcelona {#section-7}

### Tuition

Catalonia's public prices for 2026/27 are set by Decree 96/2026 (DOGC no. 9689, 18 June 2026), which lets universities charge non-EU students without Spanish residence up to the full cost of teaching. UPF applies this. The lower rate covers EU nationals and residents of Spain; a student stay permit does not count as residence.

| Level, 2026/27 | EU citizens and residents | Non-EU, non-resident |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bachelor's, first year, most degrees | $1,370 (€1,202.32) | $7,720 (€6,800.32) |
| Business Sciences — Management | $1,390 (€1,220.01) | $7,850 (€6,911.31) |
| Audiovisual Communication | $1,410 (€1,237.70) | $7,970 (€7,022.30) |
| Double degree Law + Business or Law + Economics | $2,230 (€1,962.99) | $13,140 (€11,572.89) |
| Master's, 60 credits | $1,480 (€1,302) | $6,530 (€5,749.80) |

The first-year bachelor's figure includes enrolment and records management, academic publications and student insurance. Double-degree figures on the fees page are shown at 2025/26 rates. Issuing a master's diploma costs a further $250 (€218.15).

### Living costs

UPF publishes these monthly estimates for Barcelona:

| Item | Room in a shared flat | Room in a residence |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Housing | $395–570 (€350–500) | $570–910 (€500–800) |
| Food | $225 (€200) | $225 (€200) |
| Transport | $57 (€50) | $57 (€50) |
| Other | $225 (€200) | $225 (€200) |
| Total | $910–1,080 (€800–950) | $1,080–1,420 (€950–1,250) |

Student-visa applicants must show at least 100% of Spain's IPREM income indicator for each month of study: $680 (€600) in 2026. Barcelona costs more than that minimum, so plan with the university's figures plus a rental deposit of one to two months. Dollar amounts use the ECB rate of 29 September 2026 (€1 = $1.1355) and are rounded. See also our overview of the [cost of studying in Spain](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-cost-of-studying-in-spain).

## Scholarships: what to expect {#section-8}

UPF's scholarship page lists the Spanish ministry's general grant, Catalonia's EQUITAT income-based grants, a UPF hardship fund and Santander programmes. Almost all of them require Spanish residence or a family home in Catalonia. There is no dedicated first-year award for students arriving on a student visa. Scholarships advertised by BSE or UPF Barcelona School of Management apply to their own programmes, not to UPF's official masters. External options are covered in our guide to [scholarships in Spain](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-scholarships-in-spain); the decision always rests with the funder or university.

## Housing: partner residences and renting {#section-9}

UPF does not run halls, but it has agreements with two RESA residences — La Ciutadella on Passeig Pujades next to the Ciutadella campus, and Campus del Mar next to the Mar campus — and with nine private providers that give UPF students priority, including Aparto, Livensa Living, Micampus, Vita Student, BLAU and the women-only Reina de la Pau. For flats, UPF points students to Barcelona Centre Universitari (BCU) and to Viure i Conviure, an intergenerational home-share scheme. Residence places for September sell out in spring, so book as soon as you are admitted. Our guide to [student housing in Spain](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-student-housing-spain) explains how to check listings and contracts.

## Spanish and Catalan courses at UPF {#section-10}

UPF's language service runs a face-to-face Spanish Program of 30 class hours, open to anyone over 16: eight weeks in the autumn, winter and spring editions, or two weeks plus guided self-study in the Landing and Summer editions. Groups have 10–20 students, you receive a UPF certificate with your CEFR level, and the course carries 3 ECTS. Catalan courses and the CATStudies diploma are offered separately. For a wider comparison, see our guide to [Spanish language courses in Spain](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-spanish-language-courses-in-spain) and our article on the [DELE and SIELE exams](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-dele-and-siele-spanish-exams).

## Documents and visa requirements {#section-11}

For a bachelor's: passport; school-leaving certificate with its transcript, apostilled and officially translated into Spanish; your homologation application or certificate; UNEDasiss accreditation with PCE results. For a master's: degree certificate and transcript, the documents listed in the master's section above, and any language certificates your programme asks for. The consulate needs apostilled, translated originals too, so order apostilles for both sets at once.

The admission letter starts the visa stage. The Spanish Consulate in Moscow asks for proof of funds of at least 100% of the IPREM indicator for each month of stay: in 2026 that is $680 (€600) a month, or $8,180 (€7,200) for 12 months, reduced if accommodation is prepaid for the whole stay. You also need a medical certificate with a Spanish translation, and adults staying over 180 days add an apostilled criminal record certificate. Applications go through the BLS visa centres two months before the course starts; once the study authorisation is approved, the consulate decides on the visa within a month. See our guide to the [Spanish student visa](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-student-visa-spain) for the full file.

## Can you work while you study? {#section-12}

Yes, within limits. Under Spain's immigration regulation (Royal Decree 1155/2024, article 57), a higher-education study permit lets you work without a separate application, provided the job is compatible with your studies. The cap is 30 hours a week, and exceeding it is grounds for withdrawing the permit. Work is limited to Catalonia, plus bordering towns in neighbouring regions. Curricular internships need no extra authorisation. Do not plan to fund tuition from a part-time job: a full course load in Spanish leaves few spare hours. More in our guide to [working while studying in Spain](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-working-while-studying-in-spain).

## Pros and cons for applicants from outside the EU {#section-13}

Pros

- A public-university degree in English: IBE and Global Studies cost $7,720 (€6,800.32) a year, a price fixed by decree rather than by a private school's price list.
- The Global Studies quota removes direct competition with local applicants.
- Master's applicants skip homologation, and the first round closes in January with decisions in February, leaving about six months for the visa.

Cons

- Homologation, the PCE and Catalonia's June round leave no room for delay; if you find out about them in the spring of your final school year, you will probably have to use the September round or wait a year.
- Documents must be apostilled and officially translated into Spanish, and fees must be paid through banking channels accepted in Spain, which can take time from some countries.
- Barcelona housing is expensive: UPF's guideline for a room in a shared flat is $395–570 (€350–500) a month, and residence places for September go in the spring.

## Mistakes to avoid {#section-14}

- Confusing UPF with schools that use its name. BSE, UPF Barcelona School of Management and ESCI‑UPF are separate institutions with their own fees and scholarships.
- Relying on the provisional receipt. With only a volant you are limited to the September round, at the back of the queue. Apply for homologation early, and if you have passed the exams but the certificate is still pending, apply in June anyway.
- Choosing PCE subjects at random. Only subjects weighted 0.1 or 0.2 for your degree in Catalonia raise your score.
- Applying for a master's in the fifth round. A 7 September decision almost always means missing the first semester because of the visa.
- Ignoring Catalan. An English degree title does not mean every subject is in English; check the group languages in the course plan.

## Campuses: Ciutadella, Poblenou and Mar {#section-15}

All three campuses are in Barcelona. Ciutadella, the largest, sits beside Ciutadella Park a few hundred metres from the sea and hosts economics and business, law, political science and the humanities, including IBE and Global Studies. Poblenou, in the 22@ innovation district, is the campus for communication, engineering and ICT. Mar, by the Barceloneta seafront, houses medicine and life sciences within the PRBB biomedical research park. The rectorate is in the Mercè building in the old town.

## Rankings {#section-16}

| Ranking | Position | Comment |
| --- | --- | --- |
| QS World University Rankings 2027 | 263 | about 1,770 international students in UPF's QS profile |
| THE World University Rankings 2026 | =187 | third among Spanish universities in this table |
| ShanghaiRanking ARWU 2026 | 401–500 | ARWU weights publications in the natural sciences heavily |

For choosing a degree, cut-off marks and the teaching staff tell you more than the overall position.

## FAQ {#section-17}

### How much does a UPF bachelor's degree cost for a non-EU student?

In 2026/27 the first year of most degrees costs $7,720 (€6,800.32) if you are not resident in Spain; a student stay permit does not count as residence. Double degrees cost $10,040–14,470 a year.

### Can I apply with a school diploma from outside the EU?

Yes, once your diploma is homologated to the Spanish Bachillerato and you have PCE results through UNEDasiss or a PAU/EBAU. The June round expects final homologation; if you have passed the exams but the certificate is still pending, apply in June and upload it before the process closes, usually by the end of October. Start homologation six to nine months before you graduate.

### Does UPF offer bachelor's degrees in English?

Yes. International Business Economics is fully in English and Global Studies is in English for the first two years. There are also engineering degrees with a "100% in English" option, the inter-university Bioinformatics and Industrial Technologies and Economic Analysis degrees, and a law double degree with King's College London.

### Do I need Catalan?

Not for admission. On multilingual degrees, however, some subjects are taught in Catalan, so check the group languages in the course plan. UPF offers Catalan courses on campus.

### How much is a UPF master's degree?

For non-EU students without Spanish residence, $105 (€93.50) per credit, or $6,530 (€5,749.80) for 60 credits including administrative fees, plus $34 (€30.21) per application and a $680 (€600) non-refundable reservation. BSE and UPF‑BSM programmes follow their own prices.

### When should I apply for a master's?

In the first or second round; for 2026/27 these ran from 14 November 2025 to 4 March 2026. UPF usually publishes the 2027/28 calendar in the autumn.

### Can StudyU help with UPF?

Under a service agreement we shortlist programmes, plan homologation, UNEDasiss and the PCE, prepare documents and support the preinscripció or master's application and the visa stage. Admission is decided by UPF and Catalonia's allocation system, homologation by the Spanish Ministry of Education and the visa by the Spanish consulate.
