# University of Novi Sad (Univerzitet u Novom Sadu)

The University of Novi Sad is Serbia's second-largest public university: 14 faculties in four cities of the Vojvodina province, about 350 accredited programmes and 48,180 students in 2025/26. International applicants are admitted on the same terms as Serbian citizens: with a recognised school certificate, a faculty entrance exam and proof of the teaching language. Under the 2026/27 admission call, a bachelor's programme costs a foreign student $1,020–4,090 (€900–3,600) a year, most often $2,270 (€2,000). Medicine and dentistry in English cost $7,960 (€7,000) a year. The main admission round runs in late June, and remaining places are filled in September.

## Novi Sad or Belgrade? {#section-2}

Both are public universities, and their basic admission rules are the same because they come from Serbia's Law on Higher Education. The differences are size, city and faculty-level fees.

## Faculties and cities {#section-3}

The university is a federation of faculties. Each runs its own exams, admissions and fees within a joint call approved by the University Senate.

Novi Sad, main campus:

- Faculty of Technical Sciences (FTN), the largest: mechanical, electrical and computer engineering, software engineering, civil engineering, architecture, traffic, industrial engineering, mechatronics, geodesy, graphic design, animation;
- Faculty of Sciences (PMF): biology, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, mathematics, data analytics, computer science, IT, geography, tourism and hospitality;
- Faculty of Philosophy: languages and literatures (including Russian, English, German and Hungarian), history, psychology, pedagogy, sociology, journalism, social work;
- Faculty of Law;
- Faculty of Agriculture, including veterinary medicine;
- Faculty of Technology: food technology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and chemical engineering;
- Faculty of Sport and Physical Education.

Novi Sad, off campus: Faculty of Medicine (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, rehabilitation) and the Academy of Arts (music, drama, fine and applied arts).

Subotica: Faculty of Economics (with a department in Novi Sad), Faculty of Civil Engineering, and the Hungarian-language Teacher Training Faculty.

Sombor: Faculty of Education (primary teachers, preschool teachers, librarians).

Zrenjanin: Mihajlo Pupin Technical Faculty (IT, engineering management, mechanical engineering, clothing engineering).

The university also has three research institutes, including the BioSense Institute, which grew out of FTN. Students can use the Matica Srpska Library, which holds more than 3 million publications.

## English-taught programmes {#section-4}

Most programmes are taught in Serbian. The exceptions:

- Faculty of Technical Sciences has accredited all its bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes in English. Under the 2026/27 call, English-taught study costs 50% more: $3,410 (€3,000) a year at bachelor's level instead of $2,270 (€2,000). Ask the FTN student office before applying whether an English group will run on your programme.
- Faculty of Medicine admits students to medicine (60 places) and dentistry (20 places) in English for 2026/27, at $7,960 (€7,000) a year. The chemistry and biology exam and the English check are held online. Students cannot switch from the English programme to the same programme in Serbian. - English-taught master's also exist at PMF (applied mathematics – data science, artificial intelligence, reproductive biology, cultural tourism management), Agriculture (sustainable agriculture in the Danube region), Economics (advanced data analytics in business) and Sport.

The university's 2025/26 list of English programmes included a bachelor's in economics in Subotica, but the 2026/27 call lists fees only for Serbian-taught programmes at the Faculty of Economics.

## Tuition fees for 2026/27 {#section-5}

Faculties set foreign-student fees in euros; the Faculty of Economics collects them in dinars at the National Bank of Serbia middle rate on the day of payment. A foreign student pays for the whole programme unless an international treaty or a university agreement says otherwise. At FTN the fee can be paid in full or in two equal parts: on enrolment and before the end of the winter semester.

Extra costs. Application fees: $64 (RSD 6,600) at Agriculture; $85 (RSD 8,800), or $85 (€75) from abroad, at Economics. FTN charges foreign applicants $140 (€120) for the exam for a Serbian-taught programme and $200 (€180) for an English-taught one, and $170 (€150) or $260 (€225) on enrolment. Add school certificate recognition ($86, RSD 8,900), health insurance, housing and residence permit costs. ## How to apply for a bachelor's {#section-6}

1. Choose a faculty and programme. The university's joint 2026/27 call lists every faculty's places, fees, exam subjects and dates, so you can shortlist programmes that fit your language and budget.

2. Apply for recognition of your school certificate. Foreign school documents are recognised by Serbia's Qualifications Agency (ENIC/NARIC), online or in person in Belgrade, for a fee of $86 (RSD 8,900). Russian documents need no apostille, because Serbia and Russia have a treaty exempting public documents from legalisation. A court interpreter in Serbia translates the documents. The legal deadline for a decision is 60 days. After an online application you receive an email confirming that the procedure has started, and this confirmation lets you enter the admission round. You can be enrolled conditionally, but the recognition decision must be submitted before classes begin. 3. Prove the language. A foreign student is enrolled only with proof of Serbian (or of the programme's language) and health insurance. At the Faculty of Medicine, foreign applicants' Serbian is assessed by a Faculty of Philosophy body; applicants educated in Serbian are exempt. For the English-taught medical programmes, English is checked online on exam day unless you have documents showing previous education in English.

4. Take the entrance exam. Subjects depend on the programme:

- FTN: mathematics, with aptitude components for some programmes (graphic design, environmental engineering, civil engineering) and a separate test for architecture; one application can list up to five programmes in order of priority;
- medicine and dentistry: chemistry and biology; pharmacy: chemistry with mathematics or biology;
- Faculty of Agriculture: one subject of your choice among chemistry, biology, mathematics or business economics; veterinary medicine: biology and chemistry;
- Academy of Arts: aptitude tests.

5. Understand the scoring. The maximum is 100 points. Under the 2026/27 call (Faculty of Agriculture example):

Which years of a Russian or other foreign school replace the four Serbian secondary years is decided by the faculty, so ask its student office before applying. Prize winners of national or international competitions in an exam subject receive full points for that subject; at the Faculty of Medicine this applies to prizes won in the third or fourth year of secondary school.

6. Enrol and apply for a residence permit. After enrolment the faculty issues a certificate you use to apply for temporary residence for study. ## Admission dates: the 2026 example {#section-7}

Each faculty sets its own dates. The first round in 2026 looked like this:

The second round takes place in early September and covers remaining places only; the Faculty of Agriculture, for example, accepted applications on 3–4 September 2026 and held its exam on 7 September. The 2027/28 call will be published in spring or early summer 2027 (in 2026 the Senate approved it on 29 May). By then your certificate recognition should already be under way.

## Master's and doctoral admission {#section-8}

Master's admission runs in autumn: for 2026/27 the Senate approved the call in May and September, with several rounds from September to December. Foreign degrees are recognised for further study by the university itself through the priznavanje.uns.ac.rs portal. The fee is $290 (RSD 30,000), or $300 (€260) if paid from abroad, plus a state administrative fee of $144 (RSD 14,900).

## Learning Serbian: the preparatory year {#section-9}

The Centre for Serbian as a Foreign Language has operated at the Faculty of Philosophy since 2002/03. For future university applicants it runs a preparatory year up to A2+/B1: four classes a week over two semesters. According to the centre's published prices, the winter semester costs $255 (RSD 26,400, or €224) and the spring semester $290 (RSD 30,200, or €256), about $550 in total. Course participants take the exam and get the certificate at no extra cost. Others can sit the centre's test for $105 (RSD 10,800) in September, December, April or June. The application deadline for the winter semester is 20 September.

## Housing, meals and healthcare {#section-10}

Dormitories. In Novi Sad the Student Centre runs eight dormitories with 2,713 beds, and there are more than a thousand places in Subotica, Sombor and Zrenjanin. Monthly rent is $27 (RSD 2,790) in a category I dormitory and $21 (RSD 2,150) in category II. Places, however, are allocated through the Ministry of Education's call, and under the 2026/27 call only state-funded students with Serbian or regional citizenship are eligible. The Welcome to Serbia government portal quotes 3,064 places: that is the whole capacity of Student Centre Novi Sad including its dormitories in Zrenjanin (208) and Sombor (143), and it does not change who is eligible. A fee-paying international student should budget for private rent from the start.

Meals. Novi Sad's three student restaurants also serve fee-paying students with a student card. For self-funded students breakfast costs $1 (RSD 138), lunch $3 (RSD 326) and dinner $3 (RSD 262).

Healthcare. The Institute for Student Health Care operates on campus next to the Slobodan Bajić dormitory, with general practitioners, dentists and specialist clinics. It is free for students under 26 with a Serbian health insurance card. International students need their own health insurance to enrol.

Registration and residence. On arrival, register your address with the police unless your hotel or hostel does it for you. ## Common mistakes {#section-11}

- Relying on outdated aggregator figures. Some sites still quote a flat $2,500 a year for all bachelor's programmes. The 2026/27 call ranges from $1,020 (€900) to $7,960 (€7,000), depending on faculty and language.
- Ignoring the city. Economics is in Subotica, teacher education in Sombor, and the $1,020 (€900) IT programme in Zrenjanin.
- Delaying certificate recognition. Without proof that the procedure has started, you cannot enter the admission round.
- Assuming English is everywhere. English-taught study is mainly at FTN and the Faculty of Medicine.
- Counting on a public dormitory. The call targets state-funded students with Serbian or regional citizenship.
- Waiting for September. The second round only fills remaining places.

## FAQ {#section-12}

### Can I apply with a foreign school certificate?

Yes. Serbia's Qualifications Agency recognises it (Russian documents need no apostille), then you take the faculty exam and prove the teaching language: Serbian for Serbian-taught programmes, English for English-taught ones.

### How much does it cost for international students?

Under the 2026/27 call, bachelor's programmes cost $1,020–4,090 (€900–3,600) a year, most often $2,270 (€2,000). Medicine and dentistry in English cost $7,960 (€7,000); English-taught programmes at FTN cost $3,410 (€3,000).

### Are there programmes in English?

Yes. All FTN programmes are accredited in English, and the Faculty of Medicine admits students to medicine and dentistry in English. English-taught master's are also offered at PMF, Economics, Agriculture and Sport.

### Do national exam results replace the entrance exam?

No. The faculty exam is compulsory and gives up to 60 of 100 points; the school record gives up to 40. Winners of national or international competitions in an exam subject can receive full points for it.

### Can I study for free?

International students pay for the whole programme unless an international treaty or university agreement provides otherwise. Exchange students under Erasmus+ and other mobility programmes do not pay tuition for their semester in Novi Sad.

### Where do international students live?

Under the 2026/27 call, public dormitories are for state-funded students with Serbian or regional citizenship, so fee-paying international students usually rent privately. Student restaurants are open to them with a student card.

### How is the university ranked?

THE 2026: 1501+; QS 2027: 1201–1400. In the 2026 ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects it is in the 201–300 band for food science and technology, 301–400 for agricultural sciences and 401–500 for materials science.
