# University of Nicosia (UNIC): Admission, Fees and Scholarships

UNIC, the University of Nicosia, is the biggest of the private universities in the Republic of Cyprus, with more than 11,000 students, a main campus in the Engomi district of Nicosia and teaching almost entirely in English. Its programmes are accredited by the Cyprus quality agency CYQAA, it sits in the 501–600 band of THE 2026 and the 711–720 band of QS 2027. For students from outside the EU, a bachelor's costs $11,720–13,420 (€10,320–11,820) a year in 2026/27 and medicine $27,250 (€24,000) a year. Non-EU applicants need a solid school record, English at IELTS 6.0 for bachelor's study and an entry permit, which the university requests on their behalf.

## Who UNIC suits {#section-1}

UNIC makes sense for applicants who want a degree from an EU country taught in English and who either lack the grades for a public university or do not want to study in Greek. Its strengths include business, law, IT and data science, architecture, psychology, medicine and veterinary medicine, and it reports being first among Cypriot and Greek universities in business administration. The campus is urban, with teaching buildings, residences, cafés and shops within walking distance.

Look elsewhere if you have less than about $21,000 a year for tuition and living: on UNIC's own fee sheet, a first year of business with shared housing starts at $21,560 before migration fees. Public universities in the Republic of Cyprus cost less. Universities in the north of the island are cheaper too, but they operate in a different legal system and are a separate route: see the [Northern Cyprus study guide](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-studying-in-northern-cyprus). For price and format comparisons see [European University Cyprus](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-european-university-cyprus), [UCLan Cyprus](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-uclan-cyprus) and the public [University of Cyprus](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-cyprus). Every university on the island is profiled in [universities in Cyprus](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-universities-in-cyprus).

## Accreditation and recognition {#section-2}

All UNIC degree programmes, from bachelor's to doctorate, hold accreditation from CYQAA (DIPAE), the Cyprus higher education quality agency listed on EQAR. UNIC belongs to the EUA and to the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and holds the ECTS Label and the Diploma Supplement Label. Greece's recognition centre DOATAP treats UNIC as equivalent to Greek universities.

If you plan to work in Russia or another non-EU country, your degree still goes through recognition there, and doctors also need a licence. UNIC built its MD around Directive 2005/36/EC, the EU rulebook for recognising doctors' qualifications, but the university itself advises checking licensing rules in the country where you intend to practise.

## Programmes and fees for non-EU students, 2026/27 {#section-3}

Fees are charged per ECTS credit. Migration rules require non-EU students to be full time, which means 30 ECTS each semester and 60 a year. The table shows the annual fee for 60 ECTS.

| Bachelor's programme | Length | Fee per year |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Accounting, Business Administration, Marketing Management, Management Information Systems, Hospitality Management | 4 years | $11,720 (€10,320) |
| Psychology, Digital Communication and Mass Media, Graphic and Digital Design, Interactive Media and Animation, Interior Design | 4 years | $11,720 (€10,320) |
| Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Environmental Engineering | 4 years | $12,260 (€10,800) |
| Nursing | 4 years | $12,260 (€10,800) |
| Pharmacy (integrated master's) | 5 years | $12,260 (€10,800) |
| Law, Human Biology | 4 years | $13,290 (€11,700) |
| Architecture (BAArch / MArch) | 4 / 5 years | $13,420 (€11,820) |
| Veterinary Medicine (DVM) | 5 years | $23,850 (€21,000) |
| Medicine (MD, school-leaver entry) | 6 years | $27,250 (€24,000) |
| Medicine (MD, graduate entry) | 5 years | $28,390 (€25,000) |

| Master's programme | Credits | Fee for the whole programme |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Business Administration (MBA) | 90 ECTS | $17,880 (€15,750) |
| Digital Media and Communications, Public Administration, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Oil, Gas and Energy Engineering | 90 ECTS | $16,450 (€14,490) |
| Biomedical Sciences | 90 ECTS | $17,270 (€15,210) |
| Counseling Psychology | 150 ECTS | $33,380 (€29,400) |
| Clinical Psychology | 180 ECTS | $40,060 (€35,280) |

The one-year English Language Foundation Programme, four courses, costs $8,520 (€7,500).

Charges on top of tuition for on-campus programmes (except medicine and veterinary medicine):

- application fee: $68 (€60), once;
- visa application fee: $170 (€150), once;
- registration: $34 (€30) per semester;
- health and accident insurance: $200 (€175) a year;
- student activities and technology: $40 (€35) per semester;
- refundable international student deposit: $450 (€400), returned when you leave the university.

New students in English-taught Pharmacy, the global health programme and Clinical Psychology pay a $570 (€500) seat reservation deposit, which is not refunded if they decide not to enrol.

Worked example from the fee sheet. A non-EU student's first year of Accounting costs $12,760 (€11,235): the first payment in autumn is $6,820 (€6,010), covering $5,860 (€5,160) of tuition plus charges and the deposit, followed by $5,930 (€5,225) in spring.

## How non-EU students pay {#section-4}

Under Cyprus migration rules, the first semester's tuition and charges are paid in advance; the amount is set out in the financial information attached to your acceptance letter. From the second semester you may switch to instalments after a $1,700 (€1,500) registration deposit. Overdue amounts can attract a charge of up to 4% a year, and the university withholds grades and documents until debts are settled. Payments are made in euros by bank transfer, online through the university's payment options or by card at the finance office. Legal payment routes that currently work from Russia are covered in [our guide to paying tuition from Russia](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-how-to-pay-for-studies-abroad-from-russia).

## Scholarships and discounts {#section-5}

- For school grades. In their first year, non-EU students may receive a percentage reduction based on their school leaving certificate. Conditions: the certificate is submitted with the application, the semester is paid in full in advance and the student is full time at 30 ECTS. It lasts one academic year.
- For performance at UNIC. From the third semester the reduction follows your cumulative GPA: 50% at 4.00, 20% from 3.75 and 10% from 3.50. You must be full time and have completed at least 60 ECTS at UNIC.
- Athletic scholarships of up to 40% for members of university teams.
- Large families (four or more children) receive 15% for the whole programme; siblings studying at the same time receive 10% each.

These awards do not apply to master's, doctoral, medical, veterinary or online programmes. The Medical School runs its own scheme of up to 20% based on demonstrated financial need. The Cypriot government grants mentioned by UNIC are for Cypriot and EU citizens permanently resident in Cyprus. If you qualify for several awards, you receive the largest one.

## Admission requirements and deadlines {#section-6}

School certificate. UNIC publishes an equivalence table that includes the Russian attestat:

| Category | School certificate average |
| --- | --- |
| Standard entry | 3.5 out of 5 or higher |
| Special admission with extra academic support in year one | 3.0–3.49 |
| Programmes with higher requirements | 4.0 or higher |

Some programmes add their own conditions, such as specific subjects, a portfolio for architecture and design, or an interview.

English. The minimum for bachelor's study is IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72 or Cambridge First 160; for master's it is IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79 or Cambridge First 176. Applicants with IELTS 4.5 or above take UNIC's English placement test and receive language support classes as needed.

Deadlines for non-EU students. Studies start in September or February. The complete application must arrive by the end of June for the autumn semester, the end of October for spring and the end of February for the summer session. The entry permit takes time, so apply earlier.

## Entry permit: documents to prepare {#section-7}

Non-EU students need an entry permit, which UNIC calls a student visa. The process starts after the conditional acceptance letter: UNIC files the documents with the Migration Department and the Ministry of Education, the permit is issued in Cyprus once approved, and you receive a copy to travel with. Typical documents:

- school leaving certificate with transcript, attested (apostille where applicable);
- passport valid for at least two years from the start of the semester;
- police clearance certificate (valid 6 months);
- bank letter confirming the sponsor's ability to pay, where the sponsor is a parent or the student (valid 6 months); other sponsors need a court affidavit;
- a recent bank statement (no older than one month) with a balance covering first-year tuition;
- blood tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C, and a chest X-ray for tuberculosis (valid 4 months);
- health insurance, renewed at each annual registration.

Documents must be in English or translated by an approved translator. Once in Cyprus you may work up to 20 hours a week in term and up to 38 in breaks, provided the district labour office has approved the employment contract. Visa routes for different nationalities, including Russian citizens, are explained in [the Cyprus student visa guide](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-cyprus-student-visa).

## UNIC Medical School {#section-8}

UNIC's Medical School is the largest in Cyprus. It now admits students to its own Doctor of Medicine (MD) programmes: a six-year track for school leavers and a five-year track for graduates.

| Item | MD, school-leaver entry (6 years) | MD, graduate entry (5 years) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Fee per year | $27,250 (€24,000) | $28,390 (€25,000) |
| Academic requirements | School certificate at 90% of the maximum or higher, with the same level in biology and in one of chemistry, physics or mathematics | A bachelor's degree in any field, GAMSAT 55 or UCAT under specific conditions |
| English | IELTS 6.5 (6.5 in writing, at least 6.0 elsewhere) or TOEFL iBT 79 | Same |
| Selection | Interview and volunteer experience in health or social care | Same |
| Seat deposit | $3,970 (€3,500), credited to tuition | Same |
| Extra costs | Malpractice insurance $340–1,420 (€300–1,250) a year; clinical training supplement of $3,410–6,810 (€3,000–6,000) a year for placements in the UK, USA, Switzerland or Germany | Similar |

The Medical School estimates a minimum of $13,630 (€12,000) a year for living in Nicosia. The comparison with EUC and the University of Cyprus is in [medicine in Cyprus](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-medicine-in-cyprus).

## Housing and living costs {#section-9}

UNIC has three residences in Engomi: SIX (307 apartments in six towers), TRIANGLE (147 rooms) and U (399 studios with kitchenette and balcony). The accommodation office helps with private rentals, but UNIC does not inspect private listings and is not a party to leases.

Annual cost estimates from UNIC's 2026/27 fee sheet:

| Item | Per year |
| --- | --- |
| Shared accommodation | $4,540–6,810 (€4,000–6,000) |
| Single accommodation | $6,810–11,360 (€6,000–10,000) |
| Food and personal expenses | $3,800–5,680 (€3,350–5,000) |
| Books and stationery | $450–570 (€400–500) |

A first year on a business programme with shared accommodation comes to roughly $21,560–25,820 (€18,985–22,735) before flights and before the $160 (€140) government fees for the entry permit and first registration. For other universities' budgets, see [the cost of studying in Cyprus](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-cost-of-studying-in-cyprus).

## Common mistakes {#section-10}

- Using EU prices. Non-EU students have a separate fee sheet.
- Expecting a merit discount on medicine or a master's. Grade- and GPA-based awards do not cover them; medicine offers only need-based aid of up to 20%.
- Applying at the end of June. That is the final deadline for a complete file, and the entry permit needs time.
- Sending unattested documents. The Migration Department will not accept certificates without attestation and translation.
- Looking for a British MBBS. UNIC now admits only to its own Doctor of Medicine (MD) programmes.

## FAQ {#section-11}

### How much is a bachelor's degree at the University of Nicosia?

For non-EU students in 2026/27 it costs $11,720–13,420 (€10,320–11,820) a year depending on the programme. One-off charges, insurance and a refundable deposit come on top; the first year of Accounting totals $12,760 (€11,235).

### What school grades do I need?

Standard entry requires an average of at least 3.5 out of 5 on the Russian attestat. With 3.0–3.49 you may be admitted under special admission with academic support in the first year, and some programmes expect 4.0 or higher.

### Do I need IELTS for UNIC?

Bachelor's programmes require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 72, and master's IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79. With IELTS 4.5 or above you can take UNIC's placement test and study English alongside your degree; with a lower level, the one-year Foundation Programme is the route.

### How much is medicine at UNIC?

The six-year MD costs $27,250 (€24,000) a year and the five-year graduate-entry MD $28,390 (€25,000). You need a strong school record, IELTS 6.5 and an interview, and clinical years add insurance and possible supplements for placements abroad.

### Are there scholarships for students from Russia and the CIS?

Yes. In the first year you may receive a reduction based on your school grades if you pay each semester in full, and later a GPA-based scholarship of up to 50%. Medicine, veterinary medicine and master's programmes are excluded from these awards; the Medical School considers need-based aid of up to 20%.

### When should I apply?

Non-EU students must submit a complete file by the end of June for autumn and by the end of October for spring. Applying 8–10 months before the start leaves time for the entry permit.

### How can StudyU help with a UNIC application?

Choosing a UNIC programme, checking your attestat against the equivalence table, apostille and translation, the application and the entry permit file are provided under an agreement with StudyU. Admission and any scholarship are UNIC's decision; the entry permit is granted or refused by the Civil Registry and Migration Department of the Republic of Cyprus.
