# University of Münster (Universität Münster)

The University of Münster is a large classical university in North Rhine-Westphalia that charges international students no tuition fees. For winter semester 2026/27 the only compulsory payment is a semester contribution of $420 (€369.50), which includes a Germany-wide transport pass. Applications go through the university's own online portal, not uni-assist. The detail most non-EU applicants miss: for programmes with restricted admission their winter-semester window closes on 31 May, six weeks earlier than for this year's school leavers from Germany and the EU. Münster has no Studienkolleg of its own, and it teaches one bachelor's and around twenty master's programmes in English.

## Which university this is, and what not to confuse it with {#section-1}

In 2023 the university dropped its former name, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, and became simply Universität Münster; the old name and the abbreviation WWU still appear on third-party sites. FH Münster, a separate university of applied sciences in the same city, has its own programmes and admissions; our guide to [universities of applied sciences](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-universities-of-applied-sciences-germany) explains the difference. Munster Technological University is in Ireland and unrelated.

By enrolment Münster was Germany's seventh-largest university in winter 2024/25. It covers law, economics, medicine and the natural sciences and has two theology faculties, Catholic and Protestant. It hosts two Clusters of Excellence, the older of which, "Religion and Politics", has run since 2007.

| Münster suits you if | Compare other options if |
| --- | --- |
| you want tuition-free study at a broad classical university | you need an English-taught bachelor's: there is only one, in human movement and sport science |
| you can reach C1 German and meet early deadlines | you hold a school certificate without a university year and want a Studienkolleg at the same university |
| you want an English-taught master's in economics, data science, geoinformatics or mathematics | you are counting on conditional admission while you finish a language test |
| you like a mid-sized student city | you need a big-city job market for part-time work |

Nearby tuition-free alternatives include the [University of Cologne](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-koeln) and the [University of Bonn](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-bonn).

## Deadlines for non-EU applicants {#section-2}

Applicants from outside the EU and EEA without a European school-leaving certificate have their own windows. All are cut-off dates; a deadline falling on a weekend is not extended.

| Programme | Winter semester (as in 2026/27) | Summer semester 2027 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bachelor's and state examination with restricted admission | early May to 31 May | early November to 30 November 2026 |
| Bachelor's without admission restrictions | early May to 15 July | early November 2026 to 15 January 2027 |
| Master's, first semester | early May to 15 July (some programmes until 15 September) | early November 2026 to 15 January 2027 (some until 15 March) |
| Preparatory German course (DSH) | early May to 31 May | early November to 30 November 2026 |

Applicants from Germany and the EU whose school certificate was issued after 15 January 2026 had until 15 July for these programmes, so relying on the general deadline page can cost you a year. Bachelor's decisions are sent six to eight weeks after the window closes.

A one-off note on the last intake: for winter 2026/27 several bachelor's programmes temporarily dropped admission restrictions because North Rhine-Westphalia's return to 13-year schooling produced fewer school leavers. The university stresses this applied to that semester only.

## How the application works {#section-3}

Everything is online; nothing is posted.

1. Submit the online application. One master's application can include up to three programmes. Non-EU applicants must also apply for unrestricted bachelor's programmes rather than enrolling directly.
2. Receive the check sheet by email, with your application number and the steps to complete.
3. Upload documents in the info portal. For a bachelor's: school certificate and previous study records, language certificate, and your Feststellungsprüfung if you attended a Studienkolleg. For a master's: transcript with grade point average, language certificate and any programme-specific uploads. Documents not in German or English go in one PDF (maximum 2 MB) together with an official translation.
4. Check your status in the info portal at least once a week.

The rules are strict: there is no advance document check, no late submission after the deadline and no conditional admission. uni-assist is not involved, despite what some Russian-language agency sites say.

## German language requirements {#section-4}

Each programme's admission rules (see the Studienführer) set the level.

| Level | Programmes | Accepted proof |
| --- | --- | --- |
| DSH-3 | medicine, dentistry | DSH-3; TestDaF 5 in all parts; Goethe C2 with at least 82%; telc C1 Hochschule graded "sehr gut"; Feststellungsprüfung German grade 1.0–1.3 |
| DSH-2 | most programmes | DSH-2; TestDaF 4 in all parts; DSD II; Goethe C2; UNIcert III; telc C1 Hochschule graded "gut" or "befriedigend"; Feststellungsprüfung |
| DSH-1 | bachelor's in physics, geophysics and mathematics; some music programmes | DSH-1; TestDaF 3 in all parts; telc C1 Hochschule graded "ausreichend" |

Note that the university lists Goethe C2, not C1, as proof of DSH-2 level. For medicine the bar is higher still; see our guide to [studying medicine in Germany](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-studying-medicine-in-germany).

With B1 German you can apply for the university's German as a Foreign Language course, which ends with the DSH exam. In 2026/27 it costs $570 (€500) per semester plus the regular semester contribution, since participants are enrolled students. The course fee is refunded if you pass the DSH, enrol in a Münster degree and re-register for your second semester. The DSH, TestDaF and other exams are compared in our [German language tests guide](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-german-language-tests-testdaf-dsh-goethe).

## After school abroad: the Studienkolleg is elsewhere {#section-5}

A school certificate from Russia, Belarus or Kazakhstan issued since 2015 gives access only to a Studienkolleg under the anabin database. Münster has none, so the routes are:

- a Studienkolleg in another city, then the Feststellungsprüfung and a regular application to Münster;
- sitting the Feststellungsprüfung externally without the course, which the university mentions but which demands very strong independent preparation;
- a successfully completed first year at a university at home in a related subject, which gives direct access.

The university cannot check your eligibility in advance, so use anabin yourself. See our [Studienkolleg guide](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-studienkolleg-germany).

## English-taught programmes {#section-6}

The only English-taught bachelor's is the B.Sc. Human Movement in Sports and Exercise. Master's options include:

- Business and economics: Business Administration, Business Development, Business Chemistry, Economics, Information Systems.
- Data and sciences: Data Science, Mathematics, Geophysics, Geoinformatics and Spatial Data Science, and Geospatial Technologies, an Erasmus Mundus degree with universities in Spain and Portugal.
- Society and humanities: British, American and Postcolonial Studies; Knowledge and Communication; National and Transnational Studies; Social Anthropology; Comparative Public Governance, a double degree with the University of Twente (apply to Twente).
- Law and governance: LL.M. Comparative and Global Law; the Erasmus Mundus programme PIONEER on public-sector innovation and e-governance.

English requirements are listed on each programme page, and no German is required. Compare them with other options in our guide to [English-taught master's degrees in Germany](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-masters-in-germany-in-english).

## Costs {#section-7}

### Semester contribution, winter 2026/27

| Component | Amount |
| --- | --- |
| Deutschland-Semesterticket | $260 (€226.80) |
| Studierendenwerk Münster | $140 (€119.77) |
| Student body | $20 (€17.50) |
| Culture ticket, sports, radio and supplementary insurance | about $6 (€5.43) |
| Total | $420 (€369.50) |

### Living costs

The university estimates about $1,140 (€1,000) a month to live in Münster without a job, and a residence permit costs about $120 (€110) a year. The visa requires $13,520 (€11,904) for the first year, so with two semester contributions budget at least $14,360 (€12,643), assuming the contribution stays the same. German-course participants add $570 (€500) per semester. See our guides to the [blocked account](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-blocked-account-germany) and to [tuition-free study in Germany](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-free-university-education-germany).

### Scholarships

Münster offers no full scholarships, explaining that there are no tuition fees to cover. Partial options include the ProTalent scholarship and, through the International Office, graduation and equal-opportunity scholarships and emergency aid for international degree students. Many external scholarships require excellent grades, social engagement and sometimes German citizenship, so check eligibility early.

## Housing {#section-8}

Admission does not come with a room. Studierendenwerk Münster runs 23 residences in Münster and Steinfurt with about 5,360 places, and the university warns of long waiting times; the student union's housing exchange lists private rooms. Apply for a residence place as soon as you submit your study application. Our [student housing guide](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-student-housing-germany) covers scams and search tactics.

## Practical points for applicants from Russia and the CIS {#section-9}

- Visa. Residents of Russia apply for a national study visa at the German Embassy in Moscow; the former St Petersburg consular district moved to the embassy when the consulate closed on 18 September 2026. A tourist visa cannot be converted into a study permit, and German-course participants need the visa category for study preparation. See our [student visa guide](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-student-visa-germany).
- Funds. Russian bank statements are not accepted and Russian banks cannot open a compliant blocked account; use a provider outside Russia or a formal declaration of commitment.
- Payments. Lawful payment routes are covered in [how to pay for studies abroad from Russia](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-how-to-pay-for-studies-abroad-from-russia).
- DAAD. Like other German universities, Münster points to DAAD databases for eligibility checks and scholarships. Russia's Ministry of Justice designated DAAD an undesirable organisation in February 2026, so we do not recommend its programmes to Russian citizens, who can use anabin instead; applicants from other CIS countries can use DAAD services as usual.

## Mistakes that cost a semester {#section-10}

- Working to a 15 July deadline for a restricted bachelor's: non-EU applicants must apply by 31 May.
- Looking for Münster in uni-assist: applications go only through the university portal.
- Planning to finish German after admission: there is no conditional admission.
- Submitting Goethe C1 as proof of DSH-2: the university's list names Goethe C2.
- Looking for a Studienkolleg at the university: there is none, so plan preparation with another college.

## FAQ {#section-11}

### How much does it cost to study at the University of Münster?

There are no tuition fees for regular programmes, including for non-EU citizens. Each semester you pay a contribution of $420 (€369.50) for winter 2026/27, and the university suggests budgeting about $1,140 (€1,000) a month for living costs.

### What are the application deadlines for non-EU applicants?

Restricted-admission bachelor's programmes close on 31 May for the winter semester and 30 November for the summer semester. Unrestricted bachelor's and most master's programmes close on 15 July and 15 January respectively, with later dates for some master's programmes.

### Do I apply to Münster through uni-assist?

No. All applicants, including international ones, apply through the university's online portal and upload documents to its info portal. Documents not in German or English are uploaded together with an official translation.

### Does the University of Münster have a Studienkolleg?

No. School leavers from Russia or the CIS without a university year need a Studienkolleg in another city or an external Feststellungsprüfung. The university only offers a fee-based German course with a DSH exam for applicants who already have B1.

### Can I study at Münster in English?

At bachelor's level only in Human Movement in Sports and Exercise. English-taught master's programmes include Business Administration, Economics, Data Science, Mathematics, Information Systems and Geoinformatics and Spatial Data Science.

### Is this the same as WWU or FH Münster?

WWU is the University of Münster's name before 2023. FH Münster is a separate university of applied sciences in the same city, with different programmes and admission procedures.

### What does StudyU help with for Münster?

Programme selection, a language and deadline plan, document checks before you upload to the portal and budget planning are provided under an agreement with StudyU. Admission is decided by the university, the visa by the German embassy and housing by Studierendenwerk Münster or private landlords.
