# University of Milan — La Statale (Università degli Studi di Milano)

The University of Milan, known locally as La Statale, is Milan's largest public comprehensive university, founded in 1924. Students whose family lives abroad pay a fixed fee set by their country group: in 2026/27 it ranges from $395 (€346) to $4,890 (€4,307) a year. Four bachelor's degrees, a medical school and more than 30 master's programmes and tracks are taught in English. Non-EU visa applicants face an early master's deadline — 30 April in the 2026/27 cycle.

## Which programmes are taught in English {#section-2}

Programmes are organised through faculties and schools, with departments delivering the teaching. English-taught options include:

Bachelor's degrees - Artificial Intelligence — a joint degree of the University of Milan, Milano-Bicocca and Pavia
- Ancient Civilizations for the Contemporary World
- Economics: behavior, data and policy
- International Politics, Law and Economics (IPLE)

Master's degrees (selection): - data and computing: Computer Science; Data Science for Economics and Health; Artificial Intelligence for Science and Technology; Bioinformatics for Computational Genomics; Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence;

Changes to the list are usually announced in May, around the Open Day.

## How to apply to the University of Milan, step by step {#section-3}

For a non-EU citizen living abroad who needs a study visa:

1. February–July: pick a programme. Programmes and admission calls are published every year between February and July. Each programme has a quota of places for non-EU students resident abroad.
2. Master's: admission application. In the 2026/27 cycle, open-admission master's programmes accepted applications from 22 January 2026; the deadline for non-EU applicants living abroad was 30 April 2026, while others could apply until July–October. Foreign qualifications go through apply.unimi.it under the category "non-EU residing abroad (visa app)". The $35 (€30) application fee can only be paid by credit card when applying from abroad.
3. Bachelor's: test or skills assessment. Every bachelor's programme requires an admission test or an assessment; the call specifies which.
4. By 31 July: Universitaly. Visa applicants pre-enrol on the Universitaly portal, for one university and one programme only. Acceptance there gives no right to enrolment by itself — not even with a visa or physical presence in Italy.
5. Summer: type D visa. The Italian consulate decides; see our [student visa guide](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-student-visa-italy).
6. Autumn: enrolment. Pay the first instalment, have originals checked by the International Admissions and Credentials Evaluation Office (Via Santa Sofia 9) and apply for your residence permit on arrival (see our [permesso di soggiorno guide](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-permesso-di-soggiorno-for-students)).

A useful detail: the university publishes the formula it uses to convert foreign grades — (V − Vmin) / (Vmax − Vmin) × (Imax − Imin) + Imin, where Imin/Imax are 60/100 for school diplomas and 66/110 for degrees. You can estimate how your GPA will read to the committee before applying.

As of 23 September 2026 the 2027/28 dates were not yet published. Plan as if the visa-applicant master's window will again close at the end of April, and have documents and your language certificate ready by January.

## Which documents and language certificates you need {#section-5}

- Bachelor's: 12 years of schooling before university. Graduates of 11-year systems need a year of university study at home or a recognised foundation programme.
- Master's: a bachelor's degree with the required subject credits; attach a list of exams with credits or hours so the committee can check scientific-disciplinary sectors.
- Language: English requirements are set in each programme's call. Non-EU applicants living abroad who choose Italian-taught programmes must pass an Italian test (run online with CISIA in 2026/27) unless they hold at least a B2 CLIQ certificate such as CILS, CELI, PLIDA or CERT-IT; see our guide to [Italian language certificates](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-italian-language-certificates-cils-celi-plida).
- Qualification validity: typically a Declaration of Value or CIMEA certificates, as listed on the international enrolment page.

## How much studying at La Statale costs in 2026/27 {#section-6}

Students whose family lives and earns abroad cannot obtain an Italian ISEE, so instead of an income-based fee they pay a fixed second instalment set by country group and programme "area". Area A covers most law, humanities and political/social programmes; area B covers sciences, medicine, pharmacy, agriculture and some economics programmes (including EPS and Finance and Economics). Amounts for students first enrolling in 2026/27:

The first instalment of $165 (€146) is the same for everyone. The second is issued from December and due by 2 February 2027; if it is $795 (€700) or more it can be split into four payments. The master's in Migration Studies and New Societies costs $5,110 (€4,500) a year, regional tax and stamp duty included. Check your country in Annex 2 of the fee regulations. Dollar figures use the ECB rate of 29 September 2026 (€1 = $1.1355).

For living costs, the only official Milan figure is the residence fee (see the housing section). Budget separately for a private-rental deposit, transport, health cover for the residence permit and the first weeks before any grant payment arrives.

## How to get a DSU grant and other funding {#section-7}

In Lombardy the university itself awards the regional right-to-study grant. International students with family income abroad may apply; their means are assessed through an ISEE Università parificato. Under the 2025/26 regulations (the 2026/27 logic is the same, with the years shifted), the university calculates it from home-country documents: family composition, income of all family members for the calendar year and assets (deposits, shares, property with floor area) as of 31 December, all legalised and translated into Italian by the Italian consulate. First-year students who miss the merit requirement by 30 November 2027 must repay what they received. Female students in STEM programmes receive a higher amount. The university's own European Futures Scholarships ($11,360 (€10,000)) are reserved for EU citizens; non-EU applicants can look at Italian government (MAECI) scholarships, whose 2026/27 deadline was 26 March 2026. ## Where to live: university residences and private rentals {#section-8}

The university offers 1,345 places in single and double rooms, allocated by competition for up to 11 months a year, using the same merit and income requirements as the DSU grant. Applicants must live more than 90 minutes away by public transport, have no paid job and no significant company shareholding, and owe nothing to the university. The fee is at most $3,180 (€2,799) a year. In 2026/27 applications ran from 10 July to 7 August 2026, with final rankings in early September.

Residences include Bassini, Martinitt Campus (433 beds), Santa Sofia in the centre, Ripamonti 35, Villaggio, Camplus in Sesto San Giovanni and Cascina Codazza in Lodi. ## Which mistakes to avoid when applying {#section-9}

- Relying on the $34,060 (€30,000) ISEE "no tax area": it applies only to students who can obtain an Italian ISEE.
- Waiting for summer to apply to a master's: visa applicants' window closed on 30 April in 2026/27.
- Using Universitaly for a backup choice: it covers one programme at one university.
- Submitting unlegalised income documents for DSU.
- Ignoring the programme area: EPS and Finance and Economics are area B and cost more than most social science programmes.

## What kind of university La Statale is {#section-10}

By Italian standards La Statale is young. Physician Luigi Mangiagalli founded it in 1924 to give Lombardy's capital a full university; until then, the traditional faculties for northern Italy were in Pavia. It started with Law, Humanities, Medicine and Natural Sciences, later adding Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy and Political Science.

Its landmark is the Ca' Granda on Via Festa del Perdono, a fifteenth-century hospital for the poor commissioned by the Sforza family. After wartime damage it was restored, and in 1958 the Rector's Office and the Humanities and Law faculties moved in. The sciences grew up in the Città Studi district, and the university has approved moving its scientific faculties to the former Expo 2015 site (the MIND campus).

In practical terms, La Statale covers the classic range: medicine, life sciences, pharmacy, law, political science, economics, philosophy, computer science and physics. It does not teach engineering or architecture — in Milan those belong to the [Politecnico di Milano](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-polimi).

A department's research groups, English-taught options and double degrees tell you more than the overall rank. La Statale, for instance, takes part in the ALGANT and ECMI mathematics consortia, which include a mandatory period abroad.

## Where classes take place: centre, Città Studi, Lodi and Crema {#section-12}

Humanities and law are taught in and around the Ca' Granda in the historic centre; natural sciences, computer science, physics and chemistry in Città Studi. Veterinary and some agricultural programmes are linked to Lodi, which also has a university residence, and one computer science bachelor's runs in Crema. Check the teaching address before signing a lease — crossing Milan twice a day costs time.

The university does not publish private rent benchmarks for Milan, so its own residences are the only budget figure you can rely on.

## How to find internships and work after graduation {#section-13}

Milan is Italy's financial and business hub, so internships can be found without leaving your study city. The university runs a traineeship and job service and publishes graduate employment data. Employers generally expect at least B1 Italian, even from graduates of English-taught programmes. After graduation you can apply to switch your study permit to a job-seeking permit; confirm the conditions with the Questura at that time. Medical graduates must pass the state exam and register under the rules of the country where they intend to practise.

### How much does the University of Milan cost for international students?

It depends on your country group and programme area. For students first enrolling in 2026/27, annual totals are $3,870–4,890 (€3,410–4,307) for group C, $1,230–1,520 (€1,086–1,340) for group B and $395–455 (€346–402) for group A.

### Which bachelor's degrees are taught in English?

Artificial Intelligence (joint with Milano-Bicocca and Pavia), Ancient Civilizations for the Contemporary World, Economics: behavior, data and policy, and International Politics, Law and Economics. Medicine in English is offered by the International Medical School.

### When should I apply for a master's?

In the 2026/27 cycle, applications opened on 22 January 2026 and closed on 30 April 2026 for non-EU applicants living abroad. The 2027/28 dates will appear in the new calls.

### Can I study for free?

Yes, if you win the regional DSU grant: winners get a full fee exemption plus cash and meals, partial winners a 50% exemption. Apply between 10 July and 30 September with legalised family income documents.

### Can I apply after 11 years of school?

No. You need 12 years of schooling, usually by completing a year of university at home or a recognised foundation programme.

### Does the university house every student?

No. Residence places are allocated by competition under DSU merit and income rules, at up to $3,180 (€2,799) a year.
