# Masaryk University in Brno (Masarykova univerzita, MUNI)

Masaryk University (Masarykova univerzita, MUNI) is the largest university in Brno and one of the largest in Czechia, with about 32,000 students and ten faculties ranging from medicine and law to informatics and sport. Czech-taught degrees are tuition-free. English-taught fees depend on the faculty, from $3,180 (CZK 68,000) a year at the Faculty of Education to $18,720 (CZK 400,000) for Dentistry. Applications to Czech-taught programmes for 2027/28 run from 1 November 2026 to 28 February 2027. Most faculties use MUNI's own Study Aptitude Test (TSP), which is designed for Czech-taught programmes, so you need Czech already at the exam stage.

## Who MUNI suits {#section-1}

MUNI is a good fit if you want a comprehensive research university outside Prague. Its strengths include medicine and life sciences, law, psychology, social sciences and informatics. There are many more English-taught options than at technical universities: every faculty except Law and Sports Studies teaches in English, and some also admit students for a February start.

The CEITEC MU research institute is part of the university, and the medicine and science faculties share the Bohunice campus.

## How the Study Aptitude Test (TSP) works {#section-3}

The TSP is MUNI's own general aptitude test. It measures reasoning rather than school knowledge, and at most faculties it decides admission.

- Two attempts. You can choose up to two dates, one in each block. The better result counts and applies to all your applications that require the TSP.
- Block 1: 29 November 2026 – 14 February 2027, in Brno only. Results by 22 February 2027.
- Block 2: 15 February – 25 April 2027, in Brno and other Czech and Slovak cities, including Prague, Olomouc and Bratislava. Results by 3 May 2027.
- Choosing a date. You select dates in the e-application at least 14 days in advance and no later than 28 February 2027. To use both attempts, your application must be submitted and paid by 31 January 2027.
- Format. Three sections of 15 questions each: numerical and analytical thinking, reasoning in English, and critical thinking, each with its own time limit. A correct answer earns one point, a wrong answer costs 0.2 points, and skipped questions score zero. The test is taken in person at MUNI on a tablet, not from home.
- Result. Scores are converted into percentiles, showing the share of test-takers with the same or a lower result. The admission threshold is not fixed in advance; it changes every year and is calculated according to each faculty's rules.

For international applicants the key point is that the test serves Czech-taught programmes and, apart from the English section, is set in Czech. Start preparing once you can read complex Czech texts quickly. MUNI offers a mock TSP and an e-learning course with sample tasks.

Fees are set by each faculty, some in Czech crowns and some in euros:

These are the amounts MUNI published as of September 2026. Non-EU students can pay through the Convera platform by bank transfer, card or local methods without international transfer charges.

## When to apply for 2027/28 {#section-6}

### English-taught programmes

According to MUNI's admissions page as of September 2026, deadlines are: Science, 28 February; Education, 31 March; Arts, Economics and Administration, and Informatics, 30 April; Social Studies, 15 May; Pharmacy for non-EU applicants, 1 December – 31 May; Medicine, 31 July. Arts, Economics, Informatics and Social Studies also run a February intake with deadlines of 30 September or the end of October.

A late deadline does not mean you should apply in the last month. After admission, a Kazakh or Uzbek citizen still needs time for certificate recognition and the visa, which can take up to 60 days.

## Recognition of your school certificate {#section-7}

MUNI offers two routes.

1. Verification by the faculty. You submit your foreign certificate (and any documents the faculty asks for) with the application, and the faculty checks that it gives access to bachelor's study. This may be charged and is valid only for the current admission round at that faculty; you do not receive an equivalence document. It is noticeably faster.
2. Nostrification. Regional authorities handle it; for Brno, the South Moravian Regional Authority. The result is permanent and valid for any purpose, but the process is more complex and slower and may include exams in school subjects.

## Preparing for Czech and for medicine {#section-8}

MUNI advises those who want to study in Czech to take an intensive language course the year before enrolling. However, MUNI's language course page currently lists no one-year preparatory Czech course, unlike CTU and VUT, so you will need to prepare at another centre; see our comparison of [Czech language preparatory courses](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-czech-language-preparatory-courses).

For future doctors choosing the English-taught programme, the Faculty of Medicine runs its own preparation: online courses in chemistry, biology and physics, an intensive Czech course and a Foundation Programme. Czech is useful even in an English-taught degree, both in daily life and during placements in Czech hospitals, which is why the faculty includes it.

## Dormitories and the accommodation grant {#section-9}

Housing is run by SKM MU: 10 residences across Brno with 3,440 beds. Below is the 2025/26 price list (valid from 1 February 2026), the latest published, per person per day for stays of at least a month; confirm current prices with SKM before booking:

MUNI pays an accommodation grant each semester. You may qualify if you study full-time, this is your first programme at that level in Czechia, you have not exceeded the standard length of study and you have no permanent address in Brno. Apply through the information system in November (autumn semester) and April (spring semester). MUNI does not state the amount on its applicant page, so do not count on it when planning your budget.

## Visas: citizens of Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan {#section-10}

Russian citizens. The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs list (updated 9 February 2026) has no study ground for Russian citizens: consulates accept their documents only on family grounds, under the Civil Society Programme or in the national interest. The Czech embassy in Astana confirms this applies to dual citizens as well. Separately, Czech universities apply the EU ban on "technical assistance" under Ministry of Education instruction No. MSMT-11649/2022-1; CTU, for example, publishes a list of "critical" programmes. If you are interested in informatics, cybersecurity or natural sciences, ask the MUNI faculty in writing whether it can admit a Russian citizen to your programme.

Kazakh citizens. The university books the study visa appointment at the Czech embassy in Astana by email; the wait is 21–30 days. The university may also include the student in the Režim Student programme (30 places a month shared by Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan). The consul may interview applicants in Czech, Russian or English.

Uzbek citizens. Admitted students register themselves at tashkent.visa@mzv.gov.cz with a passport scan and admission confirmation. Visa documents must be in Czech or officially translated and no older than 180 days; processing takes up to 60 days.

## Proof of funds, scholarships and work {#section-11}

How much money to show. For the visa, the Czech Ministry of the Interior requires 15 times the subsistence minimum plus twice the minimum for each further month: $5,420 (CZK 115,810) for an academic year, $3,662 (CZK 78,250) for a semester. The consular fee is $117 (CZK 2,500).

Scholarships. Besides the accommodation grant, the Faculties of Medicine, Social Studies, Arts, Economics and Administration, and Informatics announce their own financial aid for English-taught students. Conditions and amounts are on the faculty websites; the university grant does not reduce tuition.

Work. With a student visa or residence permit for study you do not need a work permit, but study must remain your main purpose of stay.

## Common mistakes when applying to MUNI {#section-12}

- Underestimating the TSP. It is not a subject exam but a test of logic and reading, mostly in Czech. Without fluent Czech reading, a high percentile is unlikely.
- Applying in February and losing the second attempt. Two TSP dates are available only if the application is submitted and paid by 31 January.
- Forgetting that faculty verification is one-off. It does not transfer to another faculty or to the next year.
- Comparing English-taught programmes on price alone. The gap between Education and Dentistry is almost sixfold and reflects very different teaching costs.
- Picking a TSP date without checking your calendar. MUNI requires that the date does not clash with its subject tests, school-leaving exams or exams at other universities. You can cancel a date, but you cannot select it again afterwards.

## FAQ {#section-14}

### Can I apply to Masaryk University after 11 years of school?

Yes, if the faculty accepts your certificate during verification or you have nostrification. For a tuition-free programme you also need Czech good enough for the TSP and lectures, so most CIS applicants plan a language year.

### Do international applicants have to take the TSP?

Yes, if the programme requires it; the rules are the same for Czechs and foreigners. Medicine, Pharmacy, Sports Studies and Social Studies admit without the TSP, using other tests.

### How much does an English-taught degree cost?

From $3,180 (CZK 68,000) a year at the Faculty of Education to $18,720 (CZK 400,000) for Dentistry. Informatics costs $5,130 (€4,500); most Science programmes cost $3,420 (€3,000).

### When should I apply for 2027/28?

For Czech-taught programmes, from 1 November 2026 to 28 February 2027. For English-taught programmes, by the faculty deadline: from 28 February at Science to 31 July at Medicine.

### Is there dormitory housing for international students?

Yes, SKM MU houses all MUNI students. A bed in a double room costs about $250–360 a month; a bed in a larger room about $160–170.

### Can a Russian citizen study at MUNI?

A Russian citizen currently cannot obtain a study visa at a Czech consulate. If you already have a legal basis to live in Czechia, you can apply on general terms, but faculties check sanctions restrictions for certain fields.
