# Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Tech)

The Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo) is a national university created on 1 October 2024 by merging the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) and Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU). You will still see both former names in search results and on older websites, but they are now one university with a single admissions portal. Science Tokyo is ranked 97th in the QS World University Rankings 2027. International students can apply to the English-taught engineering bachelor's GSEP, to Japanese-taught bachelor's programmes through the EJU, or to the English-taught International Graduate Program (IGP) for master's and doctoral study. Tuition in science and engineering is JPY 635,400 (about $4,020) a year, the same for Japanese and international students.

## What happened to Tokyo Tech and TMDU – and what it means for applicants {#section-1}

Since 1 October 2024, Tokyo Tech and TMDU no longer exist as separate universities; the Institute of Science Tokyo has replaced them. For applicants this means:

- One admissions website: admissions.isct.ac.jp. Some old titech.ac.jp and tmd.ac.jp pages still work, but current rules are published on the new site.
- Two admissions divisions. Science and engineering (former Tokyo Tech) and medicine, dentistry and health sciences (former TMDU) still run separate admissions with their own rules, deadlines and fees.
- Programmes continue. GSEP and IGP, created at Tokyo Tech, now run under the Science Tokyo name.
- Some campuses renamed. The former Suzukakedai Campus is now Yokohama Campus.
- Rankings restart. QS and THE now list the university under its new name, so compare with Tokyo Tech's past positions with care.

Science Tokyo is the right choice if you are heading into engineering, computer science, physics, chemistry, materials or life sciences and want to study in Tokyo at national-university fees. ## Schools and faculties {#section-3}

In science and engineering, six schools combine undergraduate and graduate education. Bachelor's students spend their first year in the school as a whole before choosing a department:

- School of Science – mathematics, physics, chemistry, earth and planetary sciences;
- School of Engineering – mechanical engineering, systems and control, electrical and electronic engineering, information and communications engineering, industrial engineering and economics;
- School of Materials and Chemical Technology – materials science and chemistry;
- School of Computing – mathematical and computing science, computer science;
- School of Life Science and Technology – life sciences and biotechnology;
- School of Environment and Society – architecture, civil and environmental engineering, transdisciplinary science and engineering (home of GSEP), social and human sciences, and technology and innovation management.

From TMDU come the Faculty of Medicine (established 1951; medicine with 100 places plus health sciences in nursing and medical technology) and the Faculty of Dentistry (established 1928; a six-year dentistry course and oral health programmes).

### English-taught bachelor's: GSEP

The Global Scientists and Engineers Program (GSEP) is the university's first international Bachelor of Engineering programme, with every subject taught in English. Students belong to the Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering in the School of Environment and Society. The programme is not tied to one field: students combine science, engineering and management, and many core courses are team-taught through projects and hands-on work. It admits 18 students a year – 8 MEXT scholars funded for four years and 10 privately funded international students – with an April start.

### English-taught graduate study: IGP

The International Graduate Program began at Tokyo Tech in 2007 and requires no Japanese. There are three types:

- IGP (A) – integrated master's and doctoral programme (3–5 years) with consideration for a MEXT scholarship via university recommendation; autumn start;
- IGP (B) – joint programmes: a double degree with Tsinghua University (for Tsinghua students only), a doctoral programme with RIKEN including up to three years of RIKEN funding, and early application for applicants funded by their home governments;
- IGP (C) – the main route for everyone else: master's, PhD or integrated programmes in 18 departments, with spring or autumn starts.

## How to apply {#section-4}

### GSEP

Education. 12 years of schooling or a MEXT-recognised alternative. The GSEP guide explicitly includes MEXT's list of foreign school programmes of at least 11 years, which covers Russian, Kazakh, Belarusian, Uzbek and Ukrainian certificates. Graduates of 11-year systems in other countries need an individual eligibility assessment: for 2027 entry, requests were accepted from 7 July to 6 August 2026, and applicants must be 18 by 31 March of the entry year.

English. TOEFL iBT (Home Edition included), TOEIC L&R or IELTS Academic, taken within two years before the end of the application period (from 21 August 2024 for 2027 entry). There is no minimum score; TOEFL and IELTS results must be sent directly by the testing organisation. Exemptions can be requested separately.

Documents. Online application via The Admissions Office portal, transcripts, an English score, and an evaluation and recommendation form from your school principal (or another teacher who knows your academic ability well).

Selection for 2027. Document screening, then a written exam in high-school mathematics, physics and chemistry with short critical-thinking essays, and an interview with a GSEP professor – held online in 2026.

Changes from 2028 entry (selection in 2027). The university has announced that standardised test scores in maths, physics and chemistry will become mandatory at the first stage. You will need one of:

- EJU taken in English: Mathematics Course 2 at 180+ and physics plus chemistry at a combined 160+;
- SAT 1480+ with Math 750+, plus AP or other physics and chemistry scores;
- ACT average 33+ including maths and science, with maths 34+;
- A-levels in Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, all at grade A or above;
- IB Diploma with 40+ points and Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at Higher Level.

The written exam will be replaced by an interview including an oral examination. This is a preliminary announcement; the final rules will appear in the 2028 application guide.

### GSEP with a MEXT scholarship

Eight GSEP places are reserved for MEXT scholars recommended by the university. Candidates must live outside Japan, must not hold Japanese nationality and must be born on or after 2 April 2002 (for 2027 entry). Scholars pay no fees, receive JPY 120,000 (about $760) a month for four years (the amount in the 2027 GSEP guide; MEXT may change it) and an economy-class ticket to Japan. ### Japanese-taught bachelor's for international students

This route is the special selection for privately financed international students (私費外国人留学生特別選抜). In science and engineering:

- Places: a few each in Science, Computing and Life Science and Technology; 10 in Engineering; 5 in Materials and Chemical Technology; 25 in Environment and Society, including 20 in transdisciplinary science and engineering.
- EJU 2026: Japanese at least 290/450 and science (physics, chemistry, Mathematics Course 2) at least 310/400, from one session only (June or November).
- Exams: if applicants exceed three times the quota, EJU scores are used for a first cut (results 6 January 2027). Written exams in maths, physics, chemistry, English and Japanese follow on 20 January 2027, then an interview on 10 February.
- 2027 guidelines will be published in mid-October 2026.
- 11-year school certificates. Graduates of school systems shorter than 12 years may be refused, so the university asks them to contact the admissions office as early as possible, before applying. The rules refer to the MEXT list that includes the Russian certificate, but get written confirmation.

Medicine and dentistry run a separate Japanese-taught admission for international students.

### IGP: master's and doctoral

The key requirement is finding a supervisor in advance. You must email a prospective supervisor with a self-introduction and study plan and obtain their consent; applications without it are not considered. The recommended timeline:

1. Three months before the application window – choose the IGP type, find a professor in the STRDB researcher database, confirm they are on your programme's faculty list and contact them.
2. Two months before – prepare documents on the programme's forms.
3. Five to six weeks before the deadline – submit your application.

The graduate application fee is JPY 30,000 (about $190).

### Step-by-step plan

1. Autumn 2026. The Japanese-taught route for April 2027 is open only if you sat the June 2026 EJU or registered for the November session (8 November; results 15 December) – registration closed on 30 July 2026. The guidelines appear in mid-October.
2. January–February 2027. Japanese-taught exams in Tokyo on 20 January and 10 February.
3. Spring 2027. For GSEP April 2028, reach the new thresholds in the SAT, ACT, A-levels, IB or EJU, take an English test, and read the 2028 guide as soon as it appears.
4. July–August 2027. For GSEP, request an individual eligibility assessment if needed, then apply (in 2026 the window was 12–21 August).
5. September–November 2027. First-stage results, interview and admission decision.
6. For IGP – start corresponding with a professor at least three months before your programme's window.

## Tuition and fees {#section-6}

As a national university, Science Tokyo charges Japanese and international students the same. Science and engineering fees are above the national benchmark of JPY 535,800: Tokyo Tech raised them to JPY 635,400 in 2019.

A first year in science and engineering therefore costs JPY 917,400 (about $5,810) including the admission fee; for comparison, the first year at private [Keio](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-keio) or [Sophia](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-sophia) cost JPY 1.4–2.1 million on most programmes in 2026/27. ## Scholarships {#section-7}

- MEXT Scholarship – 8 GSEP places (JPY 120,000 a month, fee waiver, flight), university recommendation for IGP (A), and embassy selection for research students.
- Scholarship for Outstanding International Undergraduates (science and engineering only) – for privately financed international undergraduates: full-tuition equivalent for top performers, half-tuition equivalent for outstanding students. It replaced the old tuition exemption; you apply after enrolment, and tuition payment is deferred while your application is reviewed.
- JASSO Honors Scholarship – JPY 48,000 (about $300) a month for privately financed international students, including in IGP (A) and (C).
- RIKEN International Program Associate – funding for doctoral students in the joint IGP (B) programme with RIKEN, for up to three years.
- ADB-JSP – the Asian Development Bank scholarship available in IGP (C).

Scholarship decisions are made by the university, MEXT, JASSO or the funding body, not by StudyU.

## Housing {#section-8}

Science Tokyo runs more than a dozen dormitories, most of them mixed Japanese-international. Rents as of October 2024:

Choose a dorm by your main campus: the university's list marks which campuses each dorm serves. The university also recommends JASSO and private company dorms, and Science Tokyo Housing Support helps with flats and guarantor companies. ## Visa and part-time work {#section-9}

After admission, the university applies for your Certificate of Eligibility (CoE), which you use to obtain a student visa at a Japanese consulate; for MEXT scholars, the university handles the visa application. The consulate decides. Student-status holders can work up to 28 hours a week after obtaining immigration permission. ## Pros and cons for applicants from Russia and the CIS {#section-10}

What helps:

- Russian, Kazakh, Belarusian, Uzbek and Ukrainian certificates are on MEXT's list, which the GSEP rules reference.
- National-university fees and international dorms from JPY 27,500 a month make Tokyo more affordable.
- IGP suits graduates of technical universities in Russia and Central Asia with a strong science background: teaching is in English and no Japanese is needed.

What makes it harder:

- GSEP has only 10 privately funded places worldwide, and from 2028 the SAT, ACT, IB and A-level thresholds become very high.
- The Japanese-taught route needs the EJU, which is held only in Japan and 13 Asian countries and regions; exams and interviews take place in Tokyo.
- IGP requires a professor's consent, and correspondence plus a research plan takes several months.
- Check early which legal channels you can use to pay fees in yen, and allow time for transfers.

## Common mistakes {#section-11}

- Looking for "Tokyo Tech" or "TMDU" as separate universities. Since October 2024 it is the Institute of Science Tokyo, with rules at admissions.isct.ac.jp.
- Preparing for GSEP 2028 under 2027 rules. From the 2027 selection, standardised tests with high thresholds are required.
- Applying to IGP without contacting a professor. Such applications are not considered.
- Missing the individual assessment window. If your certificate is not on MEXT's list, request an assessment before the GSEP window (in 2026, by 6 August).
- Choosing a dorm by price rather than campus. Campuses are spread across Tokyo, Yokohama and Chiba.
- Mixing up fee scales. Science and engineering: JPY 635,400; medical and dental graduate programmes: JPY 535,800.

- Ookayama – Meguro, Tokyo;
- Tamachi – Minato, Tokyo;
- Yokohama (formerly Suzukakedai) – Kanagawa Prefecture;
- Yushima and Surugadai – the former TMDU campus with the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry and the university hospital;
- Konodai – Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture.

## FAQ {#section-14}

### How is Science Tokyo different from Tokyo Tech?

It is the same institution in a new form: on 1 October 2024, Tokyo Tech merged with Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Science and engineering programmes, including GSEP and IGP, continue under the Institute of Science Tokyo name.

### Can I apply with 11 years of schooling?

Yes. The GSEP rules reference MEXT's list, which includes Russian, Kazakh, Belarusian, Uzbek and Ukrainian certificates. Graduates of 11-year schools in other countries need an individual eligibility assessment before applying.

### How much does Science Tokyo cost?

JPY 635,400 (about $4,020) a year in science and engineering, plus a one-off JPY 282,000 admission fee. Medical and dental bachelor's programmes cost JPY 642,960 a year.

### Is there an English-taught bachelor's degree?

### Do I need Japanese for a master's?

Not for IGP, which is taught entirely in English. Japanese-taught master's programmes require enough Japanese to pass entrance exams in Japanese.

### What dorms are available to international students?

Umegaoka and Shofu at JPY 27,500 a month, Komaba at JPY 39,500, and Ichikawa and Minami-gyotoku International House near the Yushima and Konodai campuses. Other university dorms, mostly shared by Japanese and international students, cost JPY 17,800–65,000.
