# Heidelberg University

Heidelberg University (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg) is Germany's oldest university, founded in 1386, and one of Europe's leading research universities: 49th in the THE World University Rankings 2026 and 86th in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Unlike Berlin or Hamburg, it charges non-EU students tuition: $1,712 (€1,500) per semester plus a $217 (€189.80) semester contribution. All bachelor's programmes are taught in German, and school leavers with an 11-year certificate first need a Studienkolleg or a year of university study at home. English-taught options are concentrated at master's level, with around fifteen programmes from physics and data science to economics and molecular biosciences.

## Who Heidelberg suits, and who should look elsewhere {#section-1}

Heidelberg is a comprehensive research university that is equally strong in the natural sciences, medicine and the humanities. It has been a University of Excellence since 2007; on 11 March 2026 it passed its scheduled evaluation and keeps this funding for another seven years from 1 January 2027. It hosts three Clusters of Excellence. For students this translates into large research groups, English-language seminars at master's level and an unusually dense research environment: the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and several Max Planck institutes are all in the city.

## Which programmes are available, including in English {#section-2}

The university has 13 faculties: Biosciences; Chemistry and Earth Sciences; Engineering Sciences; Mathematics and Computer Science; Physics and Astronomy; Philosophy; Modern Languages; Theology; Law; Behavioural and Cultural Studies; Economics and Social Sciences; and the two medical faculties in Heidelberg and Mannheim. Nearly all bachelor's degrees and most master's degrees are taught in German.

### English-taught master's programmes

According to the university's Study Programme Finder, these master's programmes can be completed entirely in English:

The general window for master's programmes with entry requirements but no special deadline runs from 1 April to 30 September for the winter semester and from 1 October to 31 March for the summer semester. These late dates suit EU students; if you need a visa, apply early, or your admission letter may arrive after the last available visa appointment.

Each programme sets its own English threshold in the admission regulations (Zulassungsordnung) linked from its page; there is no university-wide requirement.

### Bachelor's and state-examination programmes

Bachelor's degrees and the state-examination programmes in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and law are taught in German. Non-EU applicants with foreign school certificates apply to medicine, dentistry and pharmacy directly to the university, for the winter semester only, between 1 June and 15 July, and compete within a separate quota.

## How to apply to Heidelberg University through heiCO {#section-3}

Unlike many German universities, Heidelberg does not use uni-assist. Every applicant, including international applicants, applies directly through the heiCO portal, and the university assesses foreign qualifications itself. You do not need a VPD (preliminary review documentation).

### After 11 years of school

Under the anabin database, school-leaving certificates from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and several other CIS countries do not give direct access to a German bachelor's degree. There are two routes:

1. Heidelberg's Studienkolleg. A two-semester preparatory course ending with the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) assessment test. In Baden-Württemberg you apply not to the college but to the university where you intend to study; for Heidelberg that means heiCO, selecting "Studienkolleg" and the course that matches your intended degree: 1 May to 30 June for the winter semester, 1 November to 15 December for the summer semester. Only applicants with at least B2+ German are admitted, and places go to those who pass the entrance test. 2. A year of university at home. One successfully completed year in a related subject gives direct access to a bachelor's in the same field. Switching fields requires a Studienkolleg.

You can check your own certificate in anabin under "Schulabschlüsse mit Hochschulzugang". If you already qualify for direct entry, you cannot attend the Studienkolleg voluntarily.

### Master's degrees

You need a bachelor's degree whose content matches the programme. Each master's admission regulation lists required modules or a minimum number of credits in core subjects; Data and Computer Science, for example, checks for completed core computer science courses. A missing block of credits can lead to rejection even with excellent grades.

### Step-by-step plan for 2027

1. September to December 2026: choose a programme. Check the language, application window and prior-study requirements. Matter to Life closes as early as 1 December 2026.
2. Before the deadline: apply in heiCO. The portal lists the documents required for your profile. Competitive master's programmes usually ask for a CV, a motivation letter and a transcript.
3. At the same time: housing and finances. Apply to the Studierendenwerk halls without waiting for admission (see below) and open a blocked account for your visa.
4. Spring to summer 2027: admission and visa. With your admission letter, apply for a national D visa at the German mission responsible for your place of residence. Processing usually takes six to eight weeks. Residents of Russia apply at the embassy in Moscow, which took over from the St Petersburg consulate general when it closed on 18 September 2026; see our [student visa guide](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-student-visa-germany).
5. September to October 2027: enrolment. Pay the semester contribution and tuition to complete enrolment. The winter semester starts on 1 October.

Deadlines that fall on a weekend or public holiday are not extended; Baden-Württemberg's administrative procedure act says so explicitly. Many bachelor's programmes start only in winter; the programme page shows whether there is a summer intake. Dates were taken from the university's pages on 23 September 2026.

## What level of German or English you need {#section-5}

German-taught programmes require DSH-2 level at enrolment. Accepted certificates include:

- DSH level 2;
- TestDaF with at least TDN 4 in every section;
- telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule;
- ÖSD C2.

Admitted applicants without a certificate can sit the DSH at the university at the end of September or March for $114 (€100). Some programmes require DSH-2 at the application stage: for non-EU applicants with foreign qualifications, the bachelor's in Molecular Biotechnology, Biosciences, Biology (50%), Biochemistry and Philosophy, and the master's in Molecular Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Computer Engineering, Christianity and Culture and the Master of Education. German philology and interpreting programmes set even higher levels. English-taught master's programmes do not require German, and each programme sets its own English requirement.

## Which documents to upload to heiCO {#section-6}

heiCO generates the exact list for your programme, but it usually includes:

- your passport;
- your school-leaving certificate, or for a master's your degree certificate and transcript;
- proof of a completed year of university study or of Studienkolleg admission, for bachelor's applicants;
- translations into German or English in the format required by the programme;
- a German or English language certificate;
- a CV and motivation letter for most competitive master's programmes;
- module descriptions and credit counts if the programme checks subject-specific prerequisites.

For the visa you will also need proof of $13,584 (€11,904) for the first year and health insurance.

## What studying and living in Heidelberg costs {#section-7}

Baden-Württemberg introduced the international tuition fee in winter semester 2017/18. EU/EEA citizens and holders of a German school-leaving certificate are exempt; Studienkolleg students do not pay it either, and doctoral candidates fall under separate rules of the state fees act (LHGebG). Under its own charter, the university can exempt up to 5% of international students; apply by 15 July (winter) or 15 January (summer) and expect a decision in August or March. Students taking a second degree after completing a first one in Germany pay a separate $742 (€650) per semester. Continuing-education master's programmes charge their own fees.

### Living costs

The university estimates monthly living costs in Heidelberg at $1,021 to $2,297 (€895–2,013), depending on housing and lifestyle.

One-off costs at the start (deposit, furnishing, first insurance and semester payments) tend to fall within the first month or two, as the university warns. The university's own estimate is about $40,737 (€35,700) for a six-semester bachelor's and $27,158 (€23,800) for a four-semester master's, excluding tuition; tuition adds $10,270 (€9,000) and $6,847 (€6,000) respectively.

## How to reduce costs: scholarships and fee exemptions {#section-8}

Full scholarships for international bachelor's students are rare, and the university stresses that funding applications often close before programme applications.

- Deutschlandstipendium. $342 (€300) a month, or $4,108 (€3,600) a year, co-funded by the federal government and private sponsors recruited by the university. Nationality and family income do not matter. First-year students can apply; in 2025 almost 200 Heidelberg students received it. The university announces each round's dates on its scholarship page.
- University tuition exemption quota, as described above.
- DAAD and home-country scholarships. Check the DAAD scholarship database and your government's study-abroad programmes early; many close a year before the start of studies. Russia added the DAAD to its list of "undesirable organisations" in February 2026, so participation carries legal risk for Russian citizens and we do not recommend it to them.

## Where to live: Studierendenwerk halls and private rooms {#section-9}

In Germany, halls of residence are run by the student services organisation (Studierendenwerk), not by universities, and admission does not guarantee a room. Heidelberg's halls are almost always full.

- Apply immediately. Studierendenwerk Heidelberg accepts applications before you have an admission letter; note that you will send it later. The university recommends applying about nine months before you move in.
- Tick every option except family flats. There are not enough single apartments, and in a shared flat (WG) you still get your own bedroom.
- Say that any hall is fine. Public transport is good, and a distant hall beats no hall.
- Search the private market in parallel. Private rooms cost up to $1,080 (€950) a month, often with a deposit of two to three months' rent.

## Strengths and drawbacks of Heidelberg for international applicants {#section-10}

Applicants resident in Russia should plan for three extra constraints: visas are handled only by the German Embassy in Moscow; Russian bank statements are not accepted as proof of funds and no Russian bank offers a suitable blocked account; and direct transfers from Russian banks to the EU are difficult, so arrange a lawful payment route for tuition before you are invoiced.

## Mistakes to avoid {#section-11}

- Looking for Heidelberg in uni-assist. Applications go only through heiCO.
- Assuming German universities are free. In Baden-Württemberg non-EU students pay $1,712 (€1,500) per semester.
- Waiting for the visa before looking for housing. By October, halls are effectively full.
- Applying in the last week of the general window. A decision on a 30 September application arrives after the semester has started.
- Ignoring module requirements. Master's programmes reject applicants who lack credits in core subjects, whatever their grade average.

## Checklist before you apply {#section-12}

- The language and application window of your programme; master's deadlines differ by up to six months.
- Whether you need a Studienkolleg or already qualify through a year of university study, using anabin.
- The modules and credits required by your master's programme, and whether your degree covers them.
- A first-year budget of at least $17,440 (€15,284): $3,424 tuition, $433 contributions and $13,584 for living costs at the visa rate.
- A hall application sent at the same time as your programme application.
- A payment route from your country that works before the university issues its invoice.

## Where classes take place: Old Town, Neuenheimer Feld and Mannheim {#section-13}

The university is spread across two main areas. The Old Town (Altstadt) on the south bank of the Neckar holds the main building, the university library and the law, theology and most humanities faculties. The Im Neuenheimer Feld campus across the river houses the natural sciences, computer science, medicine, the university hospital and the neighbouring research institutes. The Medical Faculty Mannheim, in the neighbouring city, runs the English-taught Biomedical Engineering and Translational Medical Research master's programmes.

Heidelberg is a compact, safe student town where you can reach almost everything by bike or tram. The downside is housing: rooms are scarce and should be found well before your visa appointment. Frankfurt International Airport is about an hour away by train.

## Where Heidelberg stands in rankings {#section-14}

Rankings say little about an individual programme. For a master's, look at the research groups behind the degree and at how many credits the examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung) assign to research placements and the thesis.

## Working during and after your studies {#section-15}

International students may work 140 full days or 280 half days a year; jobs as student assistants at the university (HiWi) do not count towards the limit. Part-time work can ease the budget but will not cover tuition and living costs in Heidelberg.

After graduation you can obtain a residence permit to look for work for up to 18 months. Heidelberg graduates typically move into research (doctorates at the university and nearby institutes), pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, IT and consulting in the Rhine-Neckar region. Outside academia, most employers expect at least B2 German.

### How much does it cost to study at Heidelberg as a non-EU student?

### Can I apply after 11 years of school?

Not directly. You need to pass the Studienkolleg and its FSP exam (with B2+ German to get in) or complete a year of university study in a related subject at home. Then you apply for a bachelor's through heiCO; restricted programmes accept applications from 1 June to 15 July.

### Are there programmes in English?

Only at master's level: about 15 programmes, including Physics, Data and Computer Science, Mathematics of Machine Learning and Data Science, Molecular Biosciences, Economics, Computational Linguistics and Biomedical Engineering. All bachelor's programmes are taught in German.

### Do I need uni-assist for Heidelberg?

No. All applicants, including international ones, apply through the university's heiCO portal, and the university evaluates foreign qualifications itself.

### What level of German do I need?
