# The University of Edinburgh

Edinburgh does not admit school leavers with the Russian Attestat directly to its undergraduate degrees: you need either the university's own International Foundation Programme (IFP) or A-levels or the IB. UCAS applications for 2027 entry are due by 13 January 2027, or by 15 October 2026 for Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. International students starting in 2027 pay $41,110 (£31,100) or $54,070 (£40,900) a year, depending on the programme, and $78,920 (£59,700) for Medicine, and the rate stays fixed until graduation. Scottish degrees usually take four years, so budget for four years, or five with the IFP.

Founded in 1583, Edinburgh is the sixth oldest university in the UK. It ranks 35th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and 29th in the THE World University Rankings 2026.

## Can you apply after a Russian school? {#section-1}

Direct entry is not possible. Edinburgh says applicants with the Russian Attestat will normally need to complete a foundation year, and that the Attestat is not currently accepted for direct entry. Accepted routes:

- the university's International Foundation Programme (IFP), the main route for Russian school leavers;
- A-levels or the IB, for applicants from international schools;
- US qualifications (SAT, ACT, AP) under the rules for the United States.

Medicine is the exception: applicants from Russia are considered only with A-levels or the IB.

Kazakhstan. The Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools Grade 12 Certificate is approved for all subjects except Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. You need three Higher Level subjects at grades matching the programme's A-level requirement; an A on the NIS certificate counts as both A and A\*. With other Kazakh qualifications you will normally need a foundation year.

Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. School-leavers with a certificate of secondary education usually need a foundation year too, with two exceptions. The Armenian Araratian Baccalaureate is accepted for direct entry with three Extended Level subjects at the programme's A-level grades. Applicants from Azerbaijan with an average of 4.5 and 5 in required subjects may be considered by the College of Science and Engineering if they pass its internal admissions test, but these tests are being phased out as new IFP pathways arrive.

## The International Foundation Programme: Edinburgh's own foundation year {#section-2}

The IFP is a full-time, one-year programme for international students whose school qualification does not allow direct entry and whose English still needs academic development. The university runs it itself, and graduates receive a Certificate of Higher Education (SCQF Level 7). Pathways include:

- Humanities and Social Science: progression to business, accounting, finance, economics or psychology requires excellent maths grades in your final school year;
- Art and Design: progression to art or design degrees requires a portfolio;
- STEM: requires excellent grades in maths and chemistry;
- Biological, Chemical, Biomedical and Environmental Sciences: leads to programmes in the College of Science and Engineering and the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.

Entry requirements: excellent school grades achieved within the last four years and a Secure English Language Test (SELT): IELTS for UKVI with at least 5.5 in each component, or PTE Academic UKVI with at least 54 in each component. Standard IELTS Academic is not accepted, and the result must be no more than two years old at the programme start date. As of September 2026 the Home Office list has no SELT centres in Russia, so Russian applicants sit the test abroad, for example in Kazakhstan, Armenia or Georgia; see [English tests for the UK Student visa](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-english-tests-for-uk-student-visa).

Cost: $39,130 (£29,600) for 2026/27; the 2027/28 fee has not been published yet. Set aside at least $400 (£300) for books, printing and study trips. The full fee must be paid before the programme starts in September. Applications for September 2027 open in autumn 2026.

Outcome: the university reports that around 95% of IFP students typically progress to undergraduate study at Edinburgh. The degree offer is conditional, typically on a 60%+ average, passes in required subjects and the English level of your chosen degree. The humanities pathway leads to more than 150 degrees and the BCBES science pathway to more than 30, but not to Medicine or Veterinary Medicine. Some language degrees and joint degrees with mathematics are not open to IFP students. ## How to apply for an undergraduate degree {#section-3}

1. Choose up to five courses on UCAS. Edinburgh is usually one of them; your personal statement covers all five. See our guide to [applying to UK universities](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-applying-to-uk-universities).
2. Meet the deadline. For 2027 entry, 6pm GMT on 13 January 2027. For Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, 15 October 2026. Medicine applicants must sit the UCAT in 2026 before applying, and UCAT booking closed on 16 September 2026, so if you missed it, 2028 entry is the realistic target.
3. Prove your English. Each programme lists its requirement. Edinburgh accepts IELTS Academic including the Online version, TOEFL iBT (the degree finder gives the new scale for tests taken from 21 January 2026), C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency and other tests, and requirements must be met in a single sitting. IELTS and TOEFL results must be no more than two years old on the first day of the month your degree starts. For a Student visa, the English qualification must be on the university's accepted list.
4. Receive a conditional offer and meet its conditions: grades, English and, for IFP students, final IFP results.
5. Apply for accommodation by 31 July 2027 to qualify for a room offer, then apply for your visa using the CAS.

Edinburgh interviews only for Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, nursing and teacher education; Medicine and Veterinary Medicine use multiple mini-interviews. Veterinary applicants also complete a Work Experience Summary, and art and design applicants submit a portfolio.

After 13 January, only programmes that still have places accept applications; UCAS search shows which ones.

## How much does it cost? {#section-4}

International fees for undergraduate programmes starting in 2027/28:

The programme page shows the exact rate. For international students starting in 2027 the fee is fixed and not affected by annual increases. Direct entrants to Year 2 or Year 3 pay the rate of the year group they join.

With living costs at the university's estimate, a year costs about $59,510 (£45,014) on a $41,110 (£31,100) programme, $72,460 (£54,814) on a $54,070 (£40,900) programme and $97,320 (£73,614) in Medicine. Add flights, the visa fee and the health surcharge on top.

## Where will you live, and what does Edinburgh cost? {#section-5}

Accommodation offer. A new student receives an offer of university accommodation if they are single, apply for accommodation by 31 July of the start year, hold Unconditional Firm status on UCAS by 31 August, live outside the City of Edinburgh and study for the full year from September. Apply for housing as soon as you accept an offer, even a conditional one. Catered halls include two meals a day; self-catered flats have shared kitchens. A twin room in a self-catered block is usually the cheapest option. University contracts run for 39 weeks. In 2026/27 average rent is $1,550 (£1,169) a month catered and $1,220 (£925) self-catered. Most students move into private housing from Year 2.

Living costs for 2026/27, as calculated by the university in March 2026 for one student:

That is $18,390 (£13,914) for a 39-week academic year or $24,530 (£18,552) for a full year. The visa requires less: on applications from 30 November 2026, $1,590 (£1,203) a month for nine months, or $14,310 (£10,827). Treat that as the legal minimum, not a realistic budget. ## Which scholarships can applicants from Russia and the CIS get? {#section-6}

Full scholarships for undergraduates are unlikely. For students paying the international rate, Edinburgh offers a few targeted awards, and Russian citizenship does not in itself rule you out:

- Edinburgh Global Undergraduate Mathematics Scholarship: $6,610 (£5,000) a year towards living costs for students admitted to School of Mathematics degrees, renewed each year with satisfactory progress;
- Global Talent Fund BIG Scholarships: for medallists of IMO, IOI, IPhO, RMM or EGMO from any country entering BSc Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or Mathematics and Statistics; they cover tuition and part of living costs;
- the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies International Scholarship for the BVM&S, with two awards for 2026/27.

Funding for both mathematics awards has not yet been confirmed for 2027/28. You apply after submitting your UCAS application, without waiting for an offer. The university also suggests checking grants and loans from your home country.

Postgraduates can apply for university and school scholarships and for Chevening: in the 2027/28 cycle Russian citizens are eligible only if they live outside Russia, while Kazakh citizens apply under standard rules. ## How to apply for a master's degree {#section-7}

Postgraduate applications go directly to the university. Most programmes ask for the equivalent of a UK 2:1 or first-class degree in a relevant subject. With a Russian Bakalavr, Specialist Diploma or Magistr, most taught MSc programmes require an average of at least 4.0/5.0; PhD applicants need a Magistr or Kandidat Nauk. Many schools use selection deadlines: they make a few offers to outstanding candidates on a rolling basis and hold the rest until the next round. For example, the MSc Accounting and Financial Management charges an application fee of $80 (£60) and, within 28 days of an offer, a deposit of $3,310 (£2,500). Its first 2027/28 selection round closes on 14 October 2026 and the last on 9 June 2027.

International fees for one-year master's programmes in 2027/28:

As an example of English requirements, the MSc Accounting and Financial Management asks for IELTS 7.0 with at least 6.0 in each component, or TOEFL iBT at 5.0 on the new scale with at least 4.0 in each component. The university estimates postgraduate living costs for 2026/27 at $24,460 (£18,504) a year.

## Which visa do you need, and can you stay to work? {#section-8}

With your CAS you apply for a Student visa: the fee is $740 (£558) and the Immigration Health Surcharge $1,030 (£776) per year. You must hold the unpaid part of first-year fees plus living costs for 28 consecutive days: on applications from 30 November 2026 that is $14,310 (£10,827), or $1,590 (£1,203) a month for nine months. The statement must be no older than 31 days. If you live in Russia or Kazakhstan, you need a TB test from a clinic approved by the UK authorities. A four-year degree means a visa, and a health surcharge, covering all four years.

After graduating you can apply for a Graduate visa: 18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027 (two years until 31 December 2026), three years after a PhD. UK Visas and Immigration decides. ## What you can study and how the university is organised {#section-9}

Edinburgh is divided into three colleges. Unlike Oxford or Cambridge colleges, these are large academic groupings rather than residential communities. Together they contain 25 schools:

- College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences: law, the Business School, economics, history, philosophy, languages and literatures, social and political science, education, and Edinburgh College of Art (architecture, design, music, animation);
- College of Science and Engineering: informatics, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, geosciences;
- College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine: Edinburgh Medical School and the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.

A Scottish honours degree (MA Hons, BSc Hons, BEng Hons) normally takes four years. In the first two years students take courses outside their main subject and decide on their focus by the end of Year 2. Some programmes, such as Applied Mathematics, allow strong applicants to enter Year 2 and graduate in three years. Medicine (MBChB) takes six years and includes a Bachelor of Medical Sciences.

There is no single campus. Teaching takes place in the Central Area (George Square, Bristo Square, Old College), at King's Buildings, Edinburgh College of Art, Holyrood and New College, with Medicine at Edinburgh BioQuarter and Veterinary Medicine at Easter Bush. King's Buildings is about 15 minutes from the centre by bus, so check where your courses are taught. The research record goes beyond rankings: David Hume and Joseph Black studied here, Edinburgh Professor Emeritus Peter Higgs shared the Nobel Prize in Physics, and the university calls itself the home of Dolly the sheep, the first animal cloned from an adult cell.

Edinburgh suits applicants who want a leading UK university without the early deadlines and tests of Oxford and Cambridge, and those who value flexibility: in a Scottish degree you can refine your specialism by the end of the second year. ## Costly mistakes {#section-11}

- Budgeting for three years. Scottish degrees usually take four.
- Applying to Medicine after the IFP. Applicants from Russia need A-levels or the IB.
- Applying late for housing. The room offer applies only to applications made by 31 July.
- Combining IELTS scores. Edinburgh does not accept One Skill Retakes.
- Taking standard IELTS for the IFP. The foundation year accepts only IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI.
- Leaving the UCAT too late. You must sit it in the application year before applying; without it a Medicine application is not considered.
- Waiting for the IFP to open in spring. Applications open in the autumn, a year before the start.

## FAQ {#section-13}

### Can I go to Edinburgh straight after school in Russia?

Not with the Attestat alone. The usual route is the university's one-year International Foundation Programme, after which around 95% of students progress to an Edinburgh degree. A-levels or the IB are the alternatives.

### How much does a year cost?

International students starting in 2027 pay $41,110 (£31,100) or $54,070 (£40,900) a year, depending on the programme, and $78,920 (£59,700) for Medicine. The fee does not change until you graduate; living costs add about $18,390 (£13,914) per academic year.

### Why does the degree take four years?

That is the Scottish model: students take related subjects in the first two years and choose their specialism by Year 3. Strong applicants can enter some programmes directly into Year 2.

### When should I apply for 2027 entry?

Through UCAS by 6pm on 13 January 2027, or by 15 October 2026 for Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Applications for the IFP starting in September 2027 open in autumn 2026.

### Will I be offered university accommodation?

Yes, if you are a new single student from outside Edinburgh, apply for accommodation by 31 July and hold Unconditional Firm status on UCAS by 31 August.

### Do I need IELTS for UKVI?

Not for undergraduate or master's degrees: any test on the university's accepted list, including IELTS Academic Online, works if it meets the programme requirement. For the International Foundation Programme, yes: only IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI is accepted, and there are no SELT centres in Russia.

### Are there undergraduate scholarships for international students?

A few, mostly in mathematics: $6,610 (£5,000) a year for School of Mathematics students and the BIG programme for international Olympiad medallists. Funding for both is not yet confirmed for 2027/28.
