# University of Belgrade (Univerzitet u Beogradu)

The University of Belgrade is Serbia's oldest and largest university: it traces its history to 1808 and today has 31 faculties, 11 research institutes, more than 760 study programmes and about 90,000 students. It is ranked 501–600 in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). International applicants are admitted on the same terms as Serbian citizens: with a recognised school certificate and a faculty entrance exam, plus a Serbian language certificate for Serbian-taught programmes. Most bachelor's programmes cost a foreign student $1,710 to $4,090 (€1,500–3,600) a year; Medicine in English costs $9,090 (€8,000) in 2026/27. The Law, Economics, Electrical Engineering and Medicine faculties have already published 2026/27 rates; other faculties are still covered by the university's 2025/26 table. Each faculty runs its own admissions in summer and September rounds.

## How the university is organised {#section-2}

The University of Belgrade is a federation of largely autonomous faculties. Each runs its own admission call, exam and fees; the rectorate sets common rules and handles recognition of foreign degrees. The faculties fall into four groups:

- Technology and engineering (11): Architecture, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agriculture, Mining and Geology, Transport and Traffic Engineering, Technology and Metallurgy, Organizational Sciences (FON), Forestry, and the Technical Faculty in Bor;
- Sciences and mathematics (6): Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Physical Chemistry;
- Social sciences and humanities (10): Economics and Business, Law, Philosophy, Philology, Political Sciences, Security Studies, Education, Sport and Physical Education, Special Education and Rehabilitation, Orthodox Theology;
- Medical sciences (4): Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine.

The university also includes 11 research institutes and the University Library "Svetozar Marković". All Serbian state universities and several in the region were founded by the University of Belgrade. It dates from the Higher School of 1808, later the Lyceum (from 1838), and has been a university since 1905.

Subject strengths. The government's Welcome to Serbia portal, citing ShanghaiRanking subject tables, lists food science and technology, mining engineering, chemical and metallurgical engineering, physics, transport, dental medicine and pharmacy among Belgrade's strongest fields, followed by mathematics, civil engineering, nanoscience, veterinary science, medicine, agriculture, education and psychology.

## English-taught programmes {#section-3}

The university reports nearly 100 English-taught programmes across all levels, most of them at master's and doctoral level.

The September 2026 list of remaining places also includes a bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering taught in English (180 ECTS); check the fee in the faculty's call.

Master's. English-taught options exist at Electrical Engineering ($10,230, €9,000 a year), Economics ($6,820, €6,000), Law ($2,730–8,180, €2,400–7,200), Architecture and Technology and Metallurgy ($4,550, €4,000), Political Sciences ($1,710, €1,500), Forestry ($1,650, €1,450) and a university programme in Advanced Data Analysis ($2,840, €2,500). Doctoral programmes in English run at Electrical Engineering and Technology and Metallurgy ($11,370, €10,000 a year), Mathematics (mathematics, informatics, astronomy; $5,120, €4,500) and Architecture ($5,680, €5,000).

## How to apply for a bachelor's {#section-4}

1. Choose a faculty and programme. The university publishes a catalogue of accredited programmes; each faculty publishes its own call. Common rules are set by the University of Belgrade Enrolment Rulebook.

2. Start recognition of your school certificate at Serbia's Qualifications Agency: fee $86 (RSD 8,900), decision within 60 days. You can sit exams with proof that recognition has started, and enrolment before the decision is conditional (Rulebook, Article 6). 3. Prove the language. Article 5: a foreign national enrols after proving knowledge of Serbian (or the language of instruction) and having health insurance. The Centre for Serbian as a Foreign Language at the Faculty of Philology issues certificates.

4. Sit the entrance exam. Each faculty sets its own: mathematics for engineering and IT, biology and chemistry for medical programmes, aptitude tests for creative fields. The maximum is 100 points:

Ask the faculty how it converts foreign grades. Winners of the top three places in national or international competitions in the last two years of secondary school may receive full marks in that exam subject.

5. Meet the rounds. Admission runs in several rounds: the first in summer, the second in September, and some faculties add a third for remaining places. In September 2026 the university published remaining places after the second round, including at Electrical, Civil, Mechanical and Mining and Geology faculties. 2027/28 dates will appear in faculty calls in spring–summer 2027.

IB Diploma holders can apply in the first round. School success counts the average of the first two years multiplied by two (8–20 points), plus 8–20 points for the IB total of 24–45 under the Rulebook's formula.

## Tuition fees {#section-5}

Each faculty sets its fees; foreign students pay in euros and almost always more than Serbian citizens. Under Article 5 of the Rulebook, foreign nationals pay tuition for the whole course unless an international agreement says otherwise. Foreign-student bachelor's fees below use the 2026/27 rate where the faculty has already published it in its call, and the university's 2025/26 table otherwise.

The Law, Electrical Engineering and Medicine faculties take payment in dinars at the National Bank of Serbia middle rate on the day of payment; Electrical Engineering allows four equal instalments, the first at enrolment.

The Faculty of Philosophy states its foreign-student fee in dinars: $2,190 (RSD 226,519) a year.

## Master's and doctoral admission {#section-6}

Master's and doctoral candidates apply through faculty calls, and the university recognises foreign degrees. Submit two request forms, two copies of the diploma and supplement certified by a notary in Serbia, two translations by a court interpreter and the receipts. The fee is $320 (RSD 33,000), or $340 (€300) from abroad, plus a state fee of $145 (RSD 14,900). You can apply with proof that recognition has started.

## Learning Serbian {#section-7}

The Centre for Serbian as a Foreign Language at the Faculty of Philology has taught international students since 1986. Its intensive course runs in semesters at $682 (€600) each: four 90-minute classes a week, 6 ECTS per semester. Groups are beginner (A1 to A2 over two semesters), intermediate (B1 to B2) and advanced (C). The certificate exam costs $171 (€150); sessions at all levels run in January and July, with an extra late-August session (A1–B1) for university applicants. The centre is at Studentski trg 3.

## Housing and daily life {#section-8}

Dormitories. Students' Centre Belgrade, an independent institution, runs 14 dormitories with about 10,500 places and 14 student restaurants. Part of the "Rifat Burdžević" dormitory (367 places in total) is reserved for international students, mainly on exchange, in first-category apartment-style rooms; under reciprocity agreements exchange students may be housed free of charge.

Dormitory places are allocated through the Ministry of Education's annual call, and under the 2026/27 call they go to state-funded students with Serbian or regional citizenship. A fee-paying international student is not eligible through the call. The university points to two options: renting a room from the Students' Centre (in a dormitory or one of its two hostels) by direct arrangement when rooms are free, or renting privately. Registration. Foreigners must register their address within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels, hostels and dormitories do it for you; with a private landlord you go to the police or register electronically.

Health care. All university students in Serbia, including international students, can use the student health centres in their city of study.

Everyday costs. A 90-minute public transport ticket in Belgrade costs $0.5 (RSD 50). A full budget is in our cost guide.

## Common mistakes {#section-9}

- Researching the university instead of the faculty. Calls, exams, fees and dates are set by each faculty.
- Applying before recognition starts. Without the Agency's confirmation your application will not be accepted.
- Expecting a state-funded place. Foreign students generally pay throughout.
- Choosing a Serbian-taught programme without a language certificate. The Rulebook requires proof.
- Waiting for September. Autumn rounds fill leftover places only.
- Not allowing a year for Serbian. For most programmes the realistic path is a language year, then admission.

## FAQ {#section-10}

### Can international students study at the University of Belgrade?

Yes. Your school certificate is recognised by the Qualifications Agency, then you sit the faculty's entrance exam. Serbian-taught programmes require a Serbian certificate; English-taught ones require proof of English.

### How much does it cost?

Most bachelor's programmes cost $1,710–4,090 (€1,500–3,600) a year; Physics costs $682 (€600). For 2026/27, Law charges foreign students $2,800 (€2,465) and Economics $2,040 (€1,800). Medicine in English is $9,090 (€8,000); Dental Medicine in English was $5,680 (€5,000) at the 2025/26 rate.

### Are there programmes in English?

About 100 across all levels. At bachelor's level: Economics, Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine, with Mechanical Engineering added in 2026. Master's and doctoral choice is wider.

### Do my national exam results replace the entrance exam?

No. The faculty entrance exam is compulsory; school grades give up to 40 of 100 points. National and international competition winners may get full marks in the exam subject.

### Is there accommodation for international students?

A place is not guaranteed. Under the ministry's 2026/27 call, dormitory places go to state-funded students with Serbian or regional citizenship. A fee-paying international student can ask the Students' Centre about a dormitory or hostel room by direct arrangement, but most rent privately. Exchange students are housed in a dedicated section of the "Rifat Burdžević" dormitory.

### Can I study for free?

Foreign students usually pay. The government's "World in Serbia" scholarship is for citizens of Non-Aligned Movement countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America; under bilateral agreements Russia has 30 government scholarships for 2026/27 covering bachelor's, master's, doctoral study and training, with candidates nominated by the Russian side. ### How is the University of Belgrade ranked?

It is in the 501–600 band of ARWU 2026 and describes itself as one of the world's top 600 universities. Subject strengths include food science, mining, chemical engineering, physics, dental medicine and pharmacy.
