Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city and a major port on the Aegean coast. A modern, open and comfortable city with good universities, it is often called the most European city in Turkey in atmosphere and lifestyle.

## Why study in Izmir

Izmir combines a seaside rhythm with a developed economy and culture; a more affordable cost of living and a pleasant climate make it attractive for international students seeking a balance between quality education, the sea and a calm pace.

The cost of living in Izmir is lower than in Istanbul: rent and everyday expenses are more moderate, and there is plenty of student housing. The city suits those who want comfortable seaside living within a reasonable budget.

## Student life

The heart of student life is the Kordon seafront and the Alsancak district, full of cafés and meeting spots. People in Izmir are known for their open, relaxed character, and the nearby Aegean Sea and ancient cities (Ephesus is close) make leisure varied.

Bornova is the main student district (Ege University, Yaşar): everything runs on students, from cafés to copy shops. Alsancak brings the Kordon waterfront, nightlife and higher rents; Buca is budget-friendly and homey. Izmir is the most "European" of Turkish cities in rhythm.

## Housing and prices

A room runs $150-300 a month, a studio $300-550, residences from $200. Kordon and Alsancak price about a quarter above Bornova.

## Transport and budget

Metro, tram and bay ferries on the İzmirim Kart student card. Budget: $550-800 a month. Çeşme and Alaçatı make one-hour weekend escapes.

## Studying and living: what Izmir offers

Turkey's third city is nicknamed the country's San Francisco: the Kordon waterfront, a famously liberal vibe, Aegean climate. Ege University, Dokuz Eylül, Yaşar and Izmir Ekonomi span medicine to design; the student districts of Bornova and Alsancak are all cafés, coworking spaces and bike lanes. Prices sit clearly below Istanbul, the city is compact, and the sea is a tram ride away. If you want a relaxed, European-feeling environment without capital-city chaos, Izmir is Turkey's best answer.
