# Universities in Scotland for International Students: List, Fees, Four-Year Degrees and Admissions

Scotland has 19 higher education institutions, and two of them — Edinburgh and Glasgow — are in the top 100 of the THE World University Rankings 2026. The key difference from England is length: a standard honours degree takes four years, although strong applicants can often enter year two. Study is not free for international students: the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) pays tuition only for eligible Scottish-resident students, so anyone on a Student visa pays the international rate — for example, $37,378 (£28,275) a year for arts and social sciences at Glasgow in 2027/28.

## How Scottish degrees differ from English ones {#section-1}

Four years. Edinburgh describes the model simply: study several subjects in year one, decide which to continue in year two, specialise in years three and four. Integrated master's degrees in science and engineering (MPhys, MChem, MEng, MInf) and veterinary medicine take five years; medicine takes six at Edinburgh and five at Glasgow.

MA, not BA. An MA (Hons) from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen or St Andrews is a normal undergraduate arts or social science degree; Edinburgh states explicitly that it is not a postgraduate master's.

Advanced entry. Some courses admit applicants with strong A-levels, Advanced Highers or IB straight into year two, bringing the degree back to three years. Edinburgh, for example, allows this on many science, engineering and biomedical sciences degrees and most art and design degrees; it is less common in the humanities. Year-two requirements are listed separately for each course.

Why four years: the Scottish Highers. Scottish pupils take Highers rather than A-levels, usually in the penultimate school year (S5), and can enter university with them. Edinburgh, for instance, asks for four or five Highers by the end of S5 or S6 for most degrees. The next level, Advanced Highers, taken in S6, is not universal: at Edinburgh it is required only for medicine and veterinary medicine. The first university year therefore does the job of the final year of an English school — hence the broad first year and the four-year degree. For international applicants this means two things: strong A-levels or IB can earn a place in year two, while a school certificate after 11 years, as in England, usually needs a preparatory programme first (Edinburgh runs its own International Foundation Programme for students whose school qualifications are not accepted for direct entry).

Universities Scotland's 19 members also include Glasgow School of Art, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Queen Margaret University, the University of the Highlands and Islands and the Open University in Scotland. Only Edinburgh and Glasgow belong to the Russell Group; St Andrews does not, yet it outranks several English members. ## What studying in Scotland costs {#section-3}

Edinburgh fixes the international fee for the whole course; St Andrews adjusts it each year. Edinburgh, Stirling and others publish exact fees on each course page.

### Four years versus three

The Glasgow figures assume the 2027/28 rate stays flat; actual later-year fees depend on the university's policy. Scotland is cheaper per year than London, but a fourth year can wipe out the saving — ask about advanced entry if your grades allow.

### Who pays $2,410 (£1,820) — and why it does not apply to you

Scottish students pay $2,406 (£1,820) a year, fully covered by SAAS if they meet residence conditions. Students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland pay, at Edinburgh for example, $12,942 (£9,790) in 2026/27 and $13,286 (£10,050) in 2027/28. International students on a Student visa do not meet SAAS conditions and pay the international rate. Some non-UK nationals, such as those with indefinite leave to remain or EU citizens with settled or pre-settled status, can qualify for home fee status; a Student visa does not. The university assesses your fee status from your application and confirms it after you apply.

### Scholarships

- Glasgow World Changers Global Excellence: $9,254 (£7,000) a year off fees in arts and social sciences and $13,220 (£10,000) in science, engineering and medical subjects, subject to progress.
- Elsewhere, awards are usually partial; see [scholarships in the UK](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-scholarships-in-the-uk).

## Living costs {#section-4}

- Edinburgh estimates $2,044 (£1,546) a month for an undergraduate in 2026/27, or $18,394 (£13,914) for a 39-week year, excluding tuition.
- For the visa, outside London you currently show $1,548 (£1,171) a month for up to nine months; from 30 November 2026 it rises to $1,590 (£1,203), i.e. $14,313 (£10,827). The same figure applies in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, although Edinburgh rents are notably higher.
- Buses: under the Young Persons' Free Bus Travel scheme, anyone under 22 who lives in Scotland travels free by bus — a real saving for 18- and 19-year-old first-years; eligibility is checked on mygov.scot when you apply for the card.

## How to apply from Russia, Kazakhstan and the CIS {#section-5}

### Undergraduate

Applications go through UCAS with UK-wide deadlines: 15 October 2026 for medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses (and Oxbridge), 13 January 2027 for everything else. Like English universities, Scottish ones rarely accept a CIS school certificate without further study.

### Master's

Most taught master's degrees in Scotland last one year, and you apply directly to the university rather than through UCAS. Degree and English requirements are broadly the same as in England; check the country-specific page for how your grades convert.

### Medicine

Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee and St Andrews teach medicine and all require the UCAT. International medical students at Scottish schools pay a mandatory government levy towards NHS clinical teaching, usually built into the fee as at Glasgow and St Andrews, and Edinburgh asks international offer holders for a deposit of one-third of first-year fees. ## Common mistakes {#section-8}

- Assuming Scotland is free for international students. SAAS covers only eligible Scottish residents.
- Comparing annual fees only. A fourth year adds tens of thousands of dollars unless you enter year two.
- Mistaking an MA (Hons) for a master's.
- Thinking St Andrews is in the Russell Group.
- Underestimating Edinburgh rents. The visa figure is the same everywhere outside London; real costs are not.
- Forgetting the 18-month Graduate visa for applications from 1 January 2027 — the same across the UK.
