# MBA in the USA: Requirements, GMAT or GRE, Costs and the STEM MBA

- [Home](https://www.studyu.org/en/)

- [Blog](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog)

An MBA in the United States is a graduate management degree for people with work experience; the classic full-time programme lasts two years. You need a bachelor's degree, several years of work, a GMAT or GRE score, an English test if your degree was not taught in English, essays, recommendations and an interview. A year at Harvard Business School, Wharton or MIT Sloan costs roughly $130,000–136,000 in 2026–27 including living costs (Stanford GSB publishes about $141,000). Applications are made in rounds: for autumn 2027 entry the next realistic deadline is Round 2, on 5–12 January 2027 depending on the school.

## Which MBA format to choose {#section-1}

| Format | Length | Who it suits | What matters for international students |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Full-time MBA | usually 2 years | several years of experience, ready to leave work | leads to an F-1 visa and OPT work authorisation after graduation |
| Accelerated MBA | about 1 year | candidates with a business background or a clear goal | lower living costs; check whether the school issues an I-20 and whether the programme is STEM-designated |
| Part-time MBA | 3 years or more | people already working in the U.S. | usually not suitable for an F-1 visa |
| Executive MBA | about 2 years in modules | senior managers | taught in blocks and rarely structured for F-1 status |
| Online MBA | 2–3 years | people who are not relocating | no F-1 visa: F-1 students may count only one online course per term towards their full-time load |

If you want to work in the U.S. after graduation, the realistic choice for an international student is a full-time MBA. Other formats suit people who stay in their home country or already have U.S. work authorisation. For a general overview, see our [study in the USA](https://www.studyu.org/en/country-usa) page.

## Do you need an MBA? Three questions to ask first {#section-2}

An MBA pays off when you have a specific goal that is hard to reach without it. Before committing a year to preparation, answer honestly:

- Which role or industry do you want after graduating, and why does it require a business school rather than a promotion or a short course?
- Do you need to work in the U.S.? If so, only a full-time format with an F-1 visa works, and you should check the programme's STEM status early. If you plan to return home, compare U.S. programmes with European and Asian ones, which can be shorter.
- Can you handle a budget of $130,000–140,000 a year before aid, with no salary for two years apart from a summer internship?

If your goal is narrow, such as analytics or finance, compare the MBA with a specialised Master of Science. These are usually shorter, admit graduates with less experience and are often STEM-designated. See our overview of [business administration](https://www.studyu.org/en/program-business-administration) for options in other countries.

## MBA admission requirements {#section-3}

Degree. A bachelor's degree or equivalent is required; a five-year Russian specialist diploma usually qualifies. Your subject does not matter: engineers, doctors, lawyers and financiers all study for an MBA.

Work experience. Leading schools often set no formal minimum, but most students arrive with several years of full-time work. Check the class profile of each school to see the typical experience and industries.

GMAT or GRE. Harvard Business School (HBS) and Wharton accept either test and state that they have no preference; MIT Sloan and Stanford GSB also accept both. In the HBS Class of 2027, 44% of students submitted the GRE, 34% the classic GMAT and 28% the new GMAT edition (some submitted more than one). HBS sets no minimum score.

English. HBS requires the TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo if your undergraduate studies were not taught solely in English. There is no formal minimum, but the school discourages applicants with a TOEFL below 109 (traditional scale) or 5 (new scale), IELTS below 7.5, PTE below 75 or Duolingo below 145. Wharton requires the TOEFL iBT, PTE, IELTS or Duolingo if you did not study in English, and may waive it for a degree taught in English. MIT Sloan takes the opposite approach: it does not accept TOEFL or IELTS scores at all and assesses English during the interview.

Essays, recommendations and CV. Essays explain why you need an MBA and why this school; recommendations come from supervisors who have seen your work.

Interview. By invitation, after your written application is reviewed. At HBS it lasts 30 minutes.

## GMAT or GRE: which test to take {#section-4}

|  | GMAT | GRE |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it tests | quantitative and verbal reasoning, Data Insights | analytical writing, verbal and quantitative reasoning |
| Format and scale | three sections; the current GMAT Focus Edition (listed by some schools as the 10th edition) is scored 205–805, the previous version 200–800 | five sections, about 1 hour 58 minutes |
| Validity | 5 years: Wharton, for example, accepts tests taken no more than five years before the round deadline | the same, 5 years |
| Fee | depends on country and format (test centre or online); see mba.com when registering | $249 everywhere except China ($231.30), from 1 August 2026 |
| Accepted | by every school in our comparison | by every school in our comparison |

Choose based on your strengths: if data and logic problems suit you, try the GMAT; if vocabulary and writing are stronger, the GRE is often easier. Take one practice test of each and compare. Both scores last five years, so you can test early.

Find test centres and online options on mba.com and ets.org when registering. Retake rules differ between the two tests and are published there; plan for at least one retake before your target round. If there is no centre in your country, add time and money for travel.

## Deadlines: rounds for autumn 2027 entry {#section-5}

| School | Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Harvard Business School | 9 Sep 2026, decision 10 Dec | 5 Jan 2027, decision 25 Mar | none (separate 2+2 round for students: 28 Apr 2027) |
| Wharton | 8 Sep 2026, decision 17 Dec | 5 Jan 2027, decision 31 Mar | 31 Mar 2027, decision 11 May |
| MIT Sloan | 29 Sep 2026, decision mid-December | 12 Jan 2027, decision early April | none |
| Stanford GSB | 9 Sep 2026, decision 9 Dec | 6 Jan 2027, decision 1 Apr | 7 Apr 2027, decision 27 May |
| Yale SOM | 15 Sep 2026, decision 3 Dec | 6 Jan 2027, decision 18 Mar | 7 Apr 2027, decision 13 May |

Round 1 has closed everywhere except MIT Sloan, which accepts applications until 29 September 2026; apply there only if your test, essays and recommendations are already done. Application fees are $250 at MIT Sloan and $275 at Wharton. For an international student a late third round is risky: a May decision leaves little time for the visa, housing and transferring funds. A realistic target now is Round 2 in January 2027, or Round 1 in autumn 2027 for entry in 2028.

## What an MBA in the USA costs {#section-6}

Official single-student budgets for 2026–27:

| School | Tuition | Total annual budget | What is included |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Harvard Business School | $84,760 | $130,318 | tuition, health fee and insurance, housing, food, transport, other living costs; 9 months; computer extra |
| Wharton | $87,970 + $5,038 university fees | $135,441 | tuition and fees, housing ($21,258), food, books, transport, personal costs, health insurance ($5,018) |
| MIT Sloan | $91,892 (including the $2,200 programme fee) | about $134,000 | tuition plus MIT's nine-month estimate of $42,297 for housing ($17,100), food, insurance, books, transport and personal costs; the total is our calculation |
| Stanford GSB | $89,187 | $140,940 | tuition, living expenses, housing, medical insurance, health fee |
| Yale SOM | $90,900 + $500 programme fee | $128,976 | tuition, housing and food, personal expenses, transport, books, insurance |

At these prices a two-year MBA at such schools costs around $260,000–280,000, before visa costs, flights and the months before an internship salary. All amounts are in U.S. dollars as published by the schools.

Reducing the cost. At HBS about half of students receive need-based scholarships averaging around $50,000 a year, and 10% receive full-tuition scholarships. Other sources include foundation scholarships, employer sponsorship (read any work-back conditions carefully) and loans. U.S. federal loans are not available to international students, so ask each school whether it offers international student loans and whether a U.S. co-signer is required.

## Leading schools and how to compare them {#section-7}

The five schools above are only part of the picture (see our profiles of [Harvard](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-harvard) and the [University of Pennsylvania](https://www.studyu.org/en/university-upenn)); shortlists often also include Chicago Booth, Kellogg (Northwestern) and Columbia Business School. Compare them on five questions rather than ranking position:

1. Class profile. Experience, industries and the share of international students. HBS enrolled 943 students in its Class of 2027 from 9,409 applications; 37% are international, and the middle 80% of GMAT Focus scores ran from 690 to 770. At MIT Sloan about 42% of the latest entering class came from outside the United States.
2. Teaching method. HBS is built around the case method; other schools use more lectures, projects and electives.
3. Careers. Where graduates go and whether the school has ties to your target industry.
4. STEM status. Whether the programme or a track qualifies for the OPT extension.
5. Budget and aid. Full budget, scholarships and loan conditions for international students.

On accreditation: business schools at leading U.S. universities are generally accredited (AACSB is the best-known accreditor). If you consider a less well-known school, check its accreditation before applying.

A note for Russian citizens: Stanford University and Yale University, the parent universities of Stanford GSB and Yale SOM, have been designated "undesirable organisations" in Russia (Yale in July 2025, Stanford in April 2026). Participation in their programmes carries legal risk for Russian citizens, so we do not recommend these two schools to them; citizens of other countries are not affected by this designation.

## STEM MBA and OPT: working after graduation {#section-8}

After graduating, F-1 students can work in their field through Optional Practical Training (OPT) for up to 12 months. Graduates of STEM programmes may add a 24-month extension, for up to 36 months in total. The summer internship between the first and second year is authorised separately, usually as Curricular Practical Training (CPT); ask each school how it handles internship authorisation in 2026–27. STEM status depends on the programme's classification code on the Department of Homeland Security list.

Some schools offer STEM tracks within the MBA. HBS, for example, states that its STEM track qualifies international students for a total of 36 months of U.S. work authorisation after graduation. If a longer work period matters, ask the school in writing whether the whole MBA carries a STEM code or only one track, and which courses you must take.

Two points for 2026: a new DHS rule ending "duration of status" was due to take effect on 15 September and would have limited F-1 stays to the programme end date, capped at four years without an extension. On 14 September 2026 a federal court in Boston stopped it from taking effect; the litigation continues, and the rule could still come into force. And after OPT, long-term work usually requires an employer-sponsored work visa whose rules are also changing, so check uscis.gov before settling on a career plan. See our guides to [working while studying and OPT](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-working-while-studying-and-opt-usa) and to the [F-1 student visa](https://www.studyu.org/en/blog-f1-student-visa-usa).

## Pros and cons of a U.S. MBA for applicants from Russia and the CIS {#section-9}

| Pros | Cons and risks |
| --- | --- |
| Leading schools admit graduates of any discipline, including Russian specialist diplomas | A full budget of about $130,000–140,000 a year |
| GMAT and GRE are treated equally, so you can choose | You need an aptitude test and, if you studied in another language, an English test |
| Need-based scholarships are open to international students (for example at HBS) | No U.S. federal loans; private loans have conditions |
| STEM tracks allow up to 36 months of OPT | Russian-issued cards cannot pay application or test fees; use a legal alternative such as a card issued in another country |
| The two-year format with a summer internship helps you switch industry or country | Russian nationals living in Russia must travel to Warsaw or Astana for the visa interview |

## Preparation plan: 12–18 months before your round {#section-10}

1. 12–18 months ahead. Define why you need an MBA and which format; list 5–8 schools by class profile and budget.
2. 9–12 months ahead. Practice GMAT and GRE tests, choose one, prepare for 3–4 months and take a first attempt. Take the English test in parallel.
3. 4–6 months ahead. CV, essay themes, conversations with recommenders, translation or certification of your diploma if the school requires it.
4. 1–2 months ahead. Final essays, application review and fee payment by a legal method.
5. After submitting. Interview by invitation, then the decision; after admission, the deposit, financial documents for the I-20, the F-1 visa and housing.

If you are aiming for Round 2 in January 2027, sit your test no later than November–December 2026 to leave time for a retake.

## Common mistakes {#section-11}

- Choosing an online MBA to relocate. It does not lead to an F-1 visa.
- Counting tuition only. HBS tuition is $84,760, but the full budget is $130,318.
- Testing just before the deadline. Official scores take time to arrive, and both the GMAT and the GRE impose waiting periods between attempts.
- Applying in Round 3 without time for the visa. A May decision leaves little time for documents and an interview in Warsaw or Astana.
- Not confirming STEM status in writing. It decides whether you get 12 months of OPT or up to 36.

## FAQ {#faq}

### Can I do an MBA in the U.S. without work experience?

At leading schools almost everyone has experience. Some programmes, such as HBS 2+2 deferred admission, admit final-year students in advance and ask them to work before enrolling.

### Which is better for an MBA, the GMAT or the GRE?

HBS and Wharton accept both and state that they have no preference. Choose the one where your practice score is higher; both are valid for five years.

### How much does an MBA in the U.S. cost?

The 2026–27 annual budgets are $130,318 at HBS, $135,441 at Wharton, about $134,000 at MIT Sloan (tuition of $91,892 plus MIT's living-cost estimate), $140,940 at Stanford GSB and $128,976 at Yale SOM. Two years at these prices come to about $260,000–280,000.

### Are MBA scholarships available to international students?

Yes, usually based on need. At HBS about half of students receive a scholarship, averaging $50,000 a year. The school decides the amount.

### What is a STEM MBA?

An MBA, or a track within one, with a classification code on the STEM list. It allows an OPT extension of up to 36 months of U.S. work in total after graduation.

### What English level do I need?

HBS discourages applicants with a TOEFL below 109 (traditional scale) or IELTS below 7.5. Wharton requires the TOEFL iBT, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo if you did not study in English. MIT Sloan does not accept English tests and assesses English at the interview.

### Does StudyU help with MBA applications?

Under a service agreement we help you choose schools, plan testing, prepare essays, CV and documents, and then support the visa stage. The business school decides on admission and scholarships, and a U.S. consulate decides on the visa.
