# Australian University Entry After 11 Years of School: Foundation, Diploma or a Year at a Home University

If your school system ends after 11 years, as in Russia, Kazakhstan and several other CIS countries, you can still reach an Australian university, just rarely in one step. Australian schooling runs to Year 12, and universities usually treat an 11-year school certificate as insufficient for first-year entry. There are three workable routes: a foundation program of 4–12 months leading into first year, a university college diploma leading straight into second year, or a year of bachelor's study at home followed by an application to an Australian degree. For 2027, standard foundation programs cost $27,510–34,980 (A$39,172–49,800) and UNSW College diplomas $32,510–39,070 (A$46,290–55,620), and a student visa applicant must also show A$29,710 (≈ $20,870) for a year of living costs.

This guide covers the school grades specific colleges ask for, how long each route takes, how the visa works for students under 18, when to start and where families most often go wrong. ## Why an 11-year certificate does not open first year {#section-1}

Australian schooling takes 13 years from the preparatory year to Year 12, and universities compare foreign school certificates with their own senior secondary certificate. There is no national ruling on the Russian certificate (attestat); each university publishes its own list. Here is what the rules we checked show:

- UTS requires applicants from Russia to have completed at least one full-time year of bachelor's study at a recognised university.
- ANU does not include the Russian certificate in its list of school qualifications considered for admission. The same list includes the International Baccalaureate, British A-levels and the US SAT.
- The University of Melbourne, UQ and UNSW publish conditions for Russian school leavers through their foundation programs and diplomas, which is how these students reach the university.

The SAT comes with a caveat. ANU accepts it only alongside a school qualification equivalent to the Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education and advises applicants to confirm equivalence with its admissions office. ## Three routes after school compared {#section-2}

The diploma wins on time: three years in Australia to a bachelor's degree instead of four. It does, however, ask for higher grades and English, and it covers fewer fields than foundation programs. Foundation suits students who are still choosing a field or who want a year to adjust before university workload.

## Foundation programs: requirements and 2027 prices {#section-3}

Foundation programs are run by colleges linked to specific universities. The progression conditions, i.e. the final scores required for each degree, are set by the university.

Points worth knowing:

- Age. Trinity College accepts students who are at least 16 when they start.
- One-off fees. On top of tuition there is an enrolment fee: A$310 at Trinity, A$360 at UNSW College and A$260 at UQ College. Trinity charges science students a laboratory fee of A$400 per subject.
- Dates. UQ College's next intakes are 15 February and 6 September 2027, leading to UQ semester 1 or semester 2 of 2028. Trinity runs 2027 intakes in January, February, June, July, August and September, but its Comprehensive program is not listed for the Russian certificate.
- English. If your score falls short, colleges offer academic English courses first. At UNSW College, 10 weeks cost $4,880 (A$6,950) in 2027.

## Diplomas: second year without a preparation year {#section-4}

A university college diploma mirrors the first year of the degree. UNSW College describes its diplomas as designed for students who narrowly missed direct entry: 12 months over three terms, followed by second year of a UNSW bachelor's degree.

For English, the Diploma of Business requires IELTS 6.5 (writing 6.0, no other band below 6.0); the other diplomas require IELTS 6.0 with writing 6.0 and no other band below 5.5.

The Diploma of Business starts in January, May and August; architecture diplomas start only in January. The college notes that progression depends on program availability, so confirm the target degree early.

## A year at a home university: when it makes sense {#section-5}

Starting university at home costs least in cash, but it takes a year and requires strong university grades. That is exactly what UTS expects from applicants from Russia: a full year of bachelor's study at a recognised university. The route makes sense if you cannot yet fund a foundation year plus living costs in Australia, if your English is below college level, or if you want to test your chosen field before moving.

The drawbacks are concrete too. Credit for first-year subjects is at the university's discretion, so you will probably start again in first year. A home degree unrelated to your intended field weakens the application. And in your Genuine Student answers for the visa you will need to explain why you are leaving the program you started.

## If the student is under 18 {#section-6}

Many school leavers travel at 17. For the student visa, that means three mandatory steps.

1. Parental consent. Lodge Form 1229 (consent to grant an Australian visa to a child under 18) or a statutory declaration from each parent. If one parent's consent cannot be obtained, provide evidence of sole custody.
2. Welfare arrangements. Either the education provider approves accommodation and welfare and issues a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW), or you nominate a guardian on Form 157N. The guardian can be a parent, a legal custodian or a relative aged 21 or over: a grandparent, sibling, aunt or uncle. A parent can apply for a Student Guardian visa (subclass 590), and both applications should then be lodged together.
3. Dates. Welfare arrangements must run until the student turns 18. Arriving before the welfare start date is a breach of visa conditions. A CAAW must cover at least the CoE period plus 7 days, or last until the 18th birthday.

The terms and cost of welfare arrangements through a college are published by the college itself. UNSW College, for example, notes that many of its students are under 18 and offers an under-18 care program for those travelling without a parent.

## One visa for foundation and the degree {#section-7}

You can obtain one Student visa (subclass 500) for a package of courses: foundation or diploma plus the bachelor's degree. Each course needs its own CoE, and English and funds are assessed against the main (last) course in the package. Gaps between packaged courses must be under two months, unless the first course ends at the end of the Australian academic year (November) and the next starts in February.

For the visa you need to:

- show first-year tuition, A$29,710 for living costs and A$2,000 for travel if you apply from outside Australia and outside Africa;
- or, instead of savings, show that your parents earned at least A$87,856 (≈ $61,710) in the 12 months before you apply, using official tax documents;
- pay the visa charge, from A$2,500 (≈ $1,760) since 1 July 2026;
- buy Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the whole visa period;
- answer the Genuine Student questions in English, up to 150 words each. For a minor, Home Affairs also considers the parents' intentions.

The visa English threshold is IELTS 6.0, or 5.5 if the main course is preceded by a foundation program or at least 10 weeks of English study, or 5.0 with at least 20 weeks of English study. For a foundation-plus-bachelor package the visa threshold is therefore 5.5, although the college may ask for more. At-home online test versions are not accepted. Russian citizens give biometrics at collection centres in Moscow, St Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don or Vladivostok, and Kazakh citizens in Almaty (Home Affairs data as of March 2026). ## What the first year costs {#section-8}

Three examples for students starting in 2027. They include the program fee, the enrolment fee where the college lists one, the visa living-cost amount and the visa charge. Add OSHC, flights and a rental bond separately.

The visa living-cost amount is a minimum for lodging, not a Sydney rent calculation. Plan for post-study work too. The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) requires at least 92 weeks of CRICOS-registered study completed in Australia over no less than 16 months. Only study leading to a degree, diploma or trade qualification counts, and Home Affairs expressly excludes English language courses and enabling programs. A foundation program does not lead to a qualification, so do not plan on it counting. A diploma plus the remaining years of the bachelor's degree does. ## Month-by-month plan {#section-9}

Count back from the start date of the foundation program or diploma.

| 15–18 months before | Shortlist 2–3 universities and a field, read the colleges' grade and mathematics requirements, assess your English |
| 10–12 months before | Take IELTS, PTE or TOEFL in a format accepted by both the college and the visa authority; translate your Year 10 and 11 grades |
| 8–10 months before | Apply to colleges; ask whether they accept current grades before the final certificate is issued |
| After the offer | Accept, pay, receive the CoE, buy OSHC; if under 18, arrange a CAAW or a guardian |
| 3–4 months before | Lodge the visa in ImmiAccount, book biometrics, prepare financial documents |
| 2–4 weeks before | Book housing, check the welfare start date and do not arrive before it |

Caps affect timing as well. Visa processing priority depends on how far the university of your main course has progressed towards its share of the national planning level (295,000 new international students for 2027). Applying early reduces the risk of landing in the second or third priority group.

## Documents for a college application {#section-10}

- passport;
- school certificate with its transcript, or current Year 10 and 11 grades, translated into English;
- English test result;
- a portfolio for creative fields, if the target degree requires one;
- parental consent and welfare documents if the student is under 18.

Check how each college wants copies certified: translation and certification requirements vary between institutions.

## Common mistakes by families and school leavers {#section-11}

- Choosing a foundation program without tying it to a degree. The university sets the progression scores, and competitive degrees set them higher.
- Assuming a year at a home university automatically becomes second year in Australia. More often it only opens direct entry into first year.
- Sitting IELTS Online or TOEFL Home Edition, which the visa authority does not accept.
- Leaving under-18 welfare out of the budget and timeline, and arriving before the CAAW start date.
- Budgeting for one year when the foundation route means four years in Australia.
- Expecting the foundation year to count towards the 485 visa study requirement.

## FAQ {#faq}

### Can I enter an Australian university straight after Year 11?

Direct first-year entry with an 11-year certificate is rare. Most students take a foundation program or a diploma, or first complete a year at a home university, as UTS requires.

### Foundation or diploma: which is better after school?

A diploma is a year shorter because it counts as first year, but it asks for higher grades: at UNSW College an average of 4.5 and IELTS 6.0–6.5. Foundation has lower entry requirements and leaves more time to settle on a field.

### How much does a foundation program cost in Australia?

For 2027: UQ College A$39,172 including fees and textbooks, Trinity College A$46,770, UNSW College A$43,650–48,750 and Taylors College (for the University of Sydney) A$47,690–49,800. Living costs, insurance and the visa are extra.

### How old do I need to be for a foundation program?

Trinity College accepts students from age 16. Under 18, the visa requires parental consent and welfare arrangements: a CAAW letter from the education provider or a nominated guardian from within the family.

### Do Australian universities ask for Russian national exam (EGE) results?

The colleges and universities we checked assess Russian school leavers on the school certificate, current grades and an English test; their published conditions do not mention the EGE. If you apply after a year at a home university, your university grades are what matters.

### Does the foundation year count towards the post-study work visa?

Do not plan on it. Under Home Affairs rules, the 92 weeks for the 485 visa must come from study leading to a degree or diploma, and a foundation program does not award one. A three-year bachelor's degree completed in Australia meets the requirement.

### Can one visa cover both foundation and the bachelor's degree?

Yes, provided you hold a CoE for each course and the gap between them stays within the limit: under two months, or November to February when the break falls at the end of the academic year.
